Not all artists begin their work with an underpainting, but it can play an important part in the more deliberate and considered type of painting, as the idea is to leave parts of it visible in the final painting to provide color contrast, like a colored ground would.
There are certain things that we can do in helping us while we are struggling to overcome our fears. One of those things is exercise.

Unless oil paint is very thinly applied, its nature provides texture in a painting, but you can achieve more dramatic textures by mixing the paint with one of the special impasto or texturing mediums, which allow much thicker applications than normal and reduce the danger of shrinkage and cracking.
Every endeavor that you want to do will have some elements to it. One of those elements is the potential the endeavor will be able to yield to you. Maybe it’s making a fabulous living on line, that potential is there–no matter what it is you want to do.

You are now about to enter into the greatest experience of your life–a conscious use of the God Power that is within you. You are going to have great joy in doing this. You are going to receive untold good. You are going to live affirmatively.
Removing paint from the canvas with the flat edge of a painting knife is not only a way of making corrections, it is a valuable painting technique as well.
A painting will often reach a stage when it becomes unworkable because there is too much paint on the surface.
Scumbling involves applying an uneven layer of paint over a dry, thin, relatively oil free underpainting so that the first color shows through. It can create very attractive effects, and is also an excellent way of modifying color without sacrificing liveliness.
The one who learns how to control his thinking, learns how to control his destiny. We are bound by our own thought world. Nothing can save us but ourselves. The individual who will learn how consciously to change his thinking processes can remold his destiny.
This is probably the most natural and direct method for applying paint. The fingers are sensitive tools and are often better to use than either a brush or knife for subtle effect and fine control over paint thickness.
Applying thick paint with a knife gives quite a different effect than applying it with brushes. The knife squeezes the paint onto the surface, leaving flat smooth planes resulting in ridges or lines where each stroke ends.
A glaze is a thin layer of transparent paint over a dry layer of thick or thin paint. This effect is very different than can be done with opaque paint because the lower layer can be seen through the glaze.
One of the great advantages of painting in oils is that it’s easy to make corrections either to the whole painting, or just an area that you goofed on.
