Lamb sausage shakshuka with crumbled goat cheese for breakfast today. This breakfast is literally a win for me. What happened is this: here in Brazil, everything happens on WhatsApp. Deliveries. Doctor’s appointments. Taxi rides. It’s all there, but you have to speak Portuguese. Y’all know I have terrible FOMO, so when we moved here, I joined Every. Single. WhatsApp Group. Even when I only understood like maybe 1 out of every 20 messages. One day one of my groups had a lamb sausage giveaway, so I entered. AND I WON. Hence, shakshuka. Guys, don’t ask me where this lamb sausage came from or why there was a contest in the first place. I don’t know. Just let me savor the fact that I understood enough Portuguese to enter and win this giveaway. In these uncertain times, one thing is for sure: when it comes to food, language is no barrier for me. Brazil is, at its core, a meat/beans/rice heavy food culture. That’s why it was a delight to see Brazilian classics like a cashew moqueca (a sort of light, flavorful curry) and a slow roasted lamb shank reimagined last night at @balaioims with splashes of bright veggies throughout. The bright yellow cashew moqueca was a surprise hit, spicier than usual ones we’ve had (which are very reminiscent of mild curries) and dotted with simmered plantains and zucchini. The lamb shank came also had a spattering of veg that had been done dirty by being simmered along with the meat. About last night … we hosted our first Friendsgiving in São Paulo! It’s fun to bring our “brand” of Thanksgiving to a batch of new friends - complete with Malaysian/British/Brazilian touches that we’ve picked up over the years. This year, the menu still had our traditional Southern touches like cornbread stuffing, grits and pimento cheese along with our Burleigh (English) china. For our “Brazilian” touch I wet-cured a pernil (whole pork leg) sourced from our local butcher and flavored with churrascaria salt (a rougher, coarser salt than kosher salt). The pork leg, all 17 pounds of it, wet cured in a bucket in our fridge for 7 days. Then we smoked it for 6 hours. I wish I’d gotten photos, but quite honestly it took all the self control I had not to rip it to shreds and eat it all by myself while standing barefoot in my kitchen. This is why I throw parties. Because I would be a wild animal if I didn’t have to keep it together around company. Oh, and the second photo shows me with my one and only, who is an excellent co-host and chief smoker operator extraordinaire.
