Food of the Day: Rendang

ate rendang at a kenduri today and wow… i forgot how good it is. the beef was so soft it just melted, and the gravy was thick and full of spices. you can tell it’s been cooking for hours because every bite is just packed with flavor.

rendang isn’t the kind of thing you eat every day, so having it at a kenduri makes it feel even more special. like you’re sitting there with a plate of rice, rendang, maybe some other lauk, and suddenly you’re just so thankful food like this exists.

the taste is hard to explain—it’s spicy, a little sweet, and kinda nutty from the coconut. the heat builds up but you don’t stop, you just keep going. pair it with plain rice and it’s basically perfect.

idk, rendang always feels like more than just food. maybe it’s because i always have it at family events or kenduris, so it’s tied to those memories. it’s not just delicious, it’s comforting, like home on a plate.

We are asked everyday how we use home canned foods and our home processed meats. This recipe is a great example of winter comfort food on The Compound. Beans and franks are toted into the woods hot in a thermos and enjoyed as a hunter’s meal, this is also served as a side to ribs or other white meat based dishes. If you asked mom she would tell you it’s even good cold 🤣- I disagree with her there. She ladles this out onto a slice of bread that has been spread with Mayo and eats it as an open faced sandwich. Her family ate it in this way while she was growing up. Our daughter, Binx @sliceofappalachia also enjoys it this way.
