Inspired by a weekend cruise through my beloved hood -
returning to the game after three years, nearly to the day.
Hello blog world.
The loss of a friend is a harrowing thing.
Regrettably we've become increasingly familiar with the heartache of losing loved ones--yet it never gets less painful, nor easier to comprehend. In fact with all the tragedy thats cursed us in recent times I've begun to think it actually gets harder, and even more perplexing.
Sadness gives way to a true sense of helplessness, regret, anger and pain.
Nothing can seem more real, yet at the same time entirely unreal.
But as the hours creep forward and the true reality sets in, what we're left with is what we can be forever grateful for and hold onto tightly; memories.
Kind smiles stained with punch and scruff; lazy afternoons, lengthy conversation, laughs and a pack of shared cigarettes- exactly as he'd want to be preserved in the hearts of those who loved him.
It goes without saying that we'll never be the same. We'll continue to wish for the impossible- that we could turn back the clock and prevent the tragedy. That we'll never have to meet the pained eyes of each of our friends, knowing the inexorable grief we share, dreading the next devastation rising toward us like an impending tidal wave. And more than anything, that we could look into those kind eyes one last time and hold him tight.
Though chaos has become a friend of ours, all we can do for now is hold on to what we've got, take this as as reminder that life and all that we have is fleeting, and light another cigarette.
Here's to you, sweet friend.
The Goya herself
Half black man: "Did you hear about the new AIDS research thats happening?"
Grace: "Yeah Molly, did ya hear? Guess you'll have to stop fucking all those monkeys."
(Grace's fast twists in horror as she realizes the implications of her accidental political incorrectness..)
Grace: "I meant like the animals in the jungle!! Like monkeys! That wasn't supposed to be a racist comment! That was literally referring to animals! I was making fun of Molly!"
Yet again, Grace digs herself into a deep, deep, socially awkward hole.
I've been thinking a lot about New Years Resolutions. At first I was thinking about how pointless they are; how there's nothing I want to give up besides my gym membership and nothing I want to start doing besides not getting hungover. But upon personal reflection and excessive pressure from my small Asian friend with a proclivity for hoarding memories ( Kathy have you thought about your resolutions yet?? I want to write them doown!") I've decided to make a few *slight* changes and attempt, to the best of my ability, to take them seriously. That being said I don't actually believe in this shit and am just trying to be a better person for a few weeks. Here goes nothin. 1. Curse less. There's nothing I love more than a well-placed f bomb or some surprising political incorrectness. It's fun to talk and even more fun when you offend someone doing it, so I've gotten pretty used to living by the Sailors handbook. From this point forward I'll refrain from saying "fuck" around children, will integrate "heck" into my verbal repertoire, and will only use racial slurs among close friends. 2. Stay organized. This is a pretty good one, and I'm pretty sure I can do it for at least a few weeks. 3. Be financially conscious. Seriously. Its easy to complain about being broke, but it's easier to say fuck it (there aren't kids reading this) and just blow all your money on bad habits, food and booze. While this is (really) fun its not very practical and i should start saving some dough. Actual plan to come later. These three should keep me occupied through..atleast 2015. Lisa, get your journal out.
Let's talk about the weather
But seriously, this weather is absolute horse shit.
There are very few things that can reduce me to tears (country music, The QVC network, cracked dutchmasters), but I think this weather just may break me.
Twelve degrees? Come on. It's literally impossible to look or feel good in this cold of weather, unless you're inside.
If I could be lounging in this slightly pretentious sand castle at my beach right now, I'd cut off my pinkie toe with a dull knife. Not that I can feel it anyways.
"Let's drink to the hardworking people, Let's drink to the lowly of birth. Raise your glass to the good and the evil Let's drink to the salt of the earth."
The Rolling Stones
Salt of the Earth
“Maybe it meant something. Maybe not, in the long run, but no explanation, no mix of words or music or memories can touch that sense of knowing that you were there and alive in that corner of time and the world. Whatever it meant.”
-Hunter S. Thompson
The Parkers are pretty much a free ride to giggle town.
Especially when you're so hungover you can't form a sentence, much less press the button on the remote.
Thankfully once the 3-hour Parker block has ended, BET provides bountiful amounts of additional entertainment
Next Friday? sometimes. Booty Call? classic. Medea's family reuinion but OH OH Wait!! MEdea goes to JAIL. Still trying to figure out what she got locked up for but she looks super happy on the DVD cover.
Everybody hates Chris? never gets old. Chapelle's show? the ultimate. {not actually sure Chapelle has ever been on BET but damn he's good.}
106th & Park can get out of here it makes me want to watch TRL
Susan in the islands. Managing to maintain her style and tude in the most beautiful place in the world.
If I had the chance, I'd stroll these beaches every day then fall asleep to the sounds of waves crashing, dreaming only of my next stroll in the white sand.
