[[there has been a log update, finally. it's a miracle, I know.]]
“When’s the last time we did something stupid together?”
The surprise on his face would be hilarious if it didn’t also make you a bit sad.
“Dunno. ‘Fore fleet assigment, I guess.”
“Bluh to that. C’mon, we can start up the hivecraft server, build some ridiculous booby-trapped fortress for all the network nooblords to get lost in.”
He sighs; you don’t let your disappointment show. You are determined. “As fun as that sounds, I’m already behind on the next security patch, the crawlers have been getting too frequent around the portal nodes and if they-“
“Goddamnit Frohar will the network ever be SAFE? No, it’s not, you’re going to be bumping bulges black with Imperial techies for the rest of your fucking life. That’s why we have backup plans stuffed up to our spongeclots. Shit is always going to happen whether you plan for it or not, so just sit back and relax once and a while. Hivecraft, League of Lesions, Laughsassin’s Creed, Planetary Annihilation, anything. You name it, I’m game.”
For all his caterwauling about how your relationship has changed, you hope he can pull his horns from his ass long enough to see the olive branch waving under his sniffnub. You’re sick of the drama too.
You faceplant into your hands, trying to rub away the returning headache.
“Look, I really want to. Nothing would make me happier than to be able to drop everything and frag jerkwads in Battlefiend for a while. But if something happened and I’d been goofing off instead of trying to do something to belay it – I can’t live with that kind of mistake. I don’t think any of us could, because the wrong ‘techie’ finds some juicy little nugget and suddenly we have a drone sweep marching down the valley.”
It’s already bad enough you freaked out and got yourself drunk out of your gourd. You probably put yourself back nights, who knows what you fucked up while trying to convince yourself you were doing fine.
“… Maybe later. When things have calmed down a bit.”
She shoots you a parting incredulous look before rolling out of the pile and making for the door.
“Sure, lemme know whenever that miracle happens.”
You’re back at step one. Nothing gained, still drifting apart and you don’t know what to do without compromising everything you’ve worked for.
You’re running a final panel on the remaining grubs when it hits you. Is this it? You can’t step back for a minute to catch your breath, to enjoy anything. It’s just planning, planning, planning. Figuring out ways to beat the system before it catches up to you. You’re both running blindly and you don’t know when you’ll run out of ground.
You can’t be the trolls you used to be. You can’t be the ashen losers who played MMOs and told snarky jokes at each other until midday. You can’t go out on adventures or find new places or meet new, weird people. You can’t catch up with your friends (the ones who are left) on the game servers and tournament streams you used to frequent. You can’t even make any new friends (or at least meaningful acquaintences) without Frohar breathing down your neck about anonymity. You can’t find the missing holes in you where all your other quadrants ought to lie. You can’t live like this for the rest of your life. You can’t love him anymore. You can’t breathe.
You need to get out of here. Somehow, or you’re going to lose it. Leaving Frohar behind would hurt, but you’d both be better for it. You could finally get out from under his paranoia radar and he wouldn’t have to worry about you fucking up his security. Or. No. He’d still freak out about you possibly being discovered. It’s hard to remember that’s been the whole point when he’s so wrapped up in his network project. That WAS the point, right?
Sigmah, he’s cult. He has to know some place you could hide. Somewhere people wouldn’t care that you, the whole of you, is contraband. Somewhere not frozen solid. With you out of his hair, maybe Frohar could actually relax a little more. And maybe the distance would make it easier for you to be like you used to, friends and mediators and a couple of dorks keeping each other out of trouble.
Or maybe he’d be too paranoid to even open a commline for you. It stings, it hurts down to bone, but you’d still do it. You’d still be better off, and so would he. Things can’t keep going the way they are, butting heads and grinding each others’ gears until someone explodes. It’ll never wind up properly pitch, no, it’ll end bloody and grievous and possibly fatal one way or another. This thought hurts even worse, and you know what you need to do when dim season rolls around and the sky clears.
You have your lists and plans and contingencies and formulas and you are bored to tears. You haven’t done this much sterile calculation since you were scrabbling for your pre-assignment training top 10 spot during final evaluations. You were hatched to be outside, doing things, making things, finding things, even occasionally exploding things. Real Things. Not compiling abstract concepts on outdated, piteously limited software. Ugh. You might pass out here and now but then Frohar might glom onto you again and you would rather not wake up to that.

Quite abruptly you are rolled out of your comfortable sleeping position and onto the floor. You may not have daymares as bad as the rest of your huemates, but that does not make you a cheery riser. Luckily for Pirika, you are far too tangled in a wad of snuggleplanes to give her the mauling your lizardbrain wants to.
By the time you’ve fully come-to and extracted yourself, Pirika’s laughter has died down to snorting every time you stumble over. You spare her an unamused glare and notice she’s still on your husktop. Aside from your irritation, this utterly baffles you. You don’t have any games installed on it and she better not be loading things from the net. If she has a computer running in her brain, why would she even need a husktop? You would kill to have that kind of processing power at your command without a dexterity barrier. Then again, she probably doesn’t even know what to do with it.
Why is she on your specialized husktop, then?
You choke down the urge to snatch it back that rattles through your pan, letting it out through a long, pointed stretch. When you look back up she’s popping it in her modus, settling her head on her hands with a strange grin. This doesn’t bode well.

For all his caterwauling about how your relationship has changed, you hope he can pull his horns from his ass long enough to see the olive branch waving under his sniffnub. You’re sick of the drama too.
Pirika is fiddling with your husktop. You try really hard not to be bothered, but. She practically hijacked it. By all rights she should just leave it alone, right? Uggghhh, you know what, forget it, you so do not care right now. Instead, you ooze over to her side of the pile and plop against her shoulder to get a look at what she’s up to. Which is… what even is that?
“Enjoy your snoozles?”
“Gnuh.”
“Yeeeah. Don’t worry, we’ll get some caffeinated bean juice in you soon.” She sympathetically pats the top of your head, which is even more sleep-mussed than usual. It feels like a jackhammer.
She’s being oddly relaxed about your invasion of her personal space. On top of a pile, no less. Wait. Wait that’s wrong. Your memory paging is all wonky, you can’t pull up the last few hours for the life of you. Is this going to turn into some weird masochistic daymare?
“P’rika?” Oh wow, sound is pain. She makes a noise of acknowledgement. “Are we pale now?”
You slowly look towards him, which is quite the awkward angle. Your brows furrow. What? The gears in your thinkpan start turning. Oh it would be sooo easy to get back at him now, but you think the aftermath of his little emotional bloodletting would not be the best time to fuck with him. Damn. Instead, being the magnanimous saint you are, you let him off with a noogie.
“You kinda just made me barf a little, thanks.”
Tarsus: Watch the road
The knot in your gastric sac unclenches and you smile. You were worried you’d done something to mortally offend GK. “ok.. i was worried i like, offended gk or done something stupid.. i can’t help extolling your virtues to other people.. you are simply the cutest troll there is.. but if it makes you uncomfortable i’ll try not to gush too much..” You pause and can’t help the slight :3 expression that comes to your face..
"gk did say though, and i quote, "he couldn’t leave his hive for drooling suitors" and i agreed.. because duh.." You beep your adorable moirail’s nose and then let him get back to driving.
After a few minutes your palmhusk makes more bubble noises at you and you can’t help smiling again.
KC: thank you 8))
KC: i’ll keep a look out for anything interesting rocks and dirt we might pass 8DD it’s no trouble..
KC: i’m not an expert on what’s most interesting, rock-wise, so i will probably just take pictures of whatever i think is pretty..
You scrunch you nose up at the boop. ‘I am not cute, I’m terrifying,’ you say, and put your tongue out at him. ‘Drooling suitors? Argh… Alright, no comment there. I’m just going to drive.’
And drive you do. You are definitely not wondering if GK is at all attractive.
You manage to just sort of blink slowly into space at KC’s reply. You don’t think you’ve met such a guileless troll before. Sure, he has that obnoxious highblood flippancy about things that should be completely serious, but… You have to swat back the urge to see just how much you can mess with him. This is still a seadweller, and he’s AB’s moirail. Pirika is going to play nice.
You manage to hold conversation long enough to carry you through your task, talking about nonsense like the weather around his hive, terrifying arthropods encountered, fantastic and disturbing hairstyles, and somehow wind up on the subject of vehicles of which KC is hopelessly enthralled. You’ve never been on a boat yourself, and you share some of the wackier contraptions you’ve seen trolls cook up in lieu of Imperial-constructed methods. The nub-bot will always carry a special, disturbing place in your bloodpusher.
You finally run your limited pool of smalltalk dry, though, and bid an awkward farewell to the cheerful finface as you head back inside to check on Frohar. He’s still asleep, bless his stupid nugbone. You can settle back in without him noticing you even left.
Tarsus: Watch the road
AB: If he l)oes turn out to be planning something I swear I will leave him by the sil)e of the roal). I suspect we’re in full agreement on this point. 8>
AB: Glal) to hear everything’s alright, I’ll talk to you later, I suppose. 8>
AB: Take care. 8>
You shut your palmhusk and glare at Kaitos. ‘Well? Shall we be getting on?’
You shrink a little and your face crumples at Tarsus’ glare as he closes your palmhusk.
"um, sure.. what.. what’d i do?? do you want to go back??"
Then he makes a face like you just kicked him and you sigh and settle for picking a knot of that terrible mass of hair away from his horn instead.
'I quote, “everything's fine, aside from your moirail's ridiculous insinuations regarding your quadrant statuses”. Kaitos, if we get there and you start matchmaking, there will be words, alright?’
You can’t bring yourself to be too hard on him, though. He’s nearly seven feet of catastrophe in unaccustomed arctic wear, giving you the most adorable big-eyed barkbeast-cub look and you can’t handle it.
You start the truck again and head out. ‘Let’s just do this.’
You’ve reached the vehicle storage block via meandering between drifts. The latch is open by the time AB drops the line. You can’t help wishing he’d stayed instead but you are not going to be desperate. Gods you need to find more people to talk to.
KC is still in the other chat, though. You might risk entertaining him if he knocks off the shenanigans.
The rover is where you left it, sans the crates you’d brought from the depot. Behind it are the maintenance tools Frohar has for his hivehold machinery and relay stations. You’re gonna need to catalogue what you have to work with and find a way to scrounge up anything else you need.
You pull KC’s chat window up next to the spreadsheet in your UI and start moving through Frohar’s meticulously arranged shelves and drawers.

You chuckle at your palmhusk and pop it into your pocket for momentary safekeeping so you can direct all your attention to your fretbeast of a moirail. Poor thing.
"well, you took a risk talking to me right?? rather than just run off from the seadweller.." Your expression softens. You feel particularly gifted that someone so cautious as Tarsus gave you the time of day when most people are terrified of you. "was that risk worth it??"
You give him a Look. ‘I would have run if you hadn’t had me cornered in the grain shop. And then you dropped the crate on your foot and fell on your backside and it was all over for me. My bloodpusher made the choice, I had no say whatsoever.’
After a minute, though, you do concede. ‘Yes, of course it was worth it. I’m not sure about this one but… look, can I talk to GK?’
"yeah, and you wouldn’t have even considered going on this journey without my meddling.. life happens like that, sometimes.." You smile and gently pap his chest. "and like i said, i’m not about to let any harm come to you.. i can do the big bad seadweller thing if i have to.. and i’ll help you take a risk every so often too, if you want.."
Tarsus’ palmhusk is still sitting in your lap, so you pass it over to him and quickly pull out your own one to message GK back.
KC: hey, i’m just stating a fact 8DD
KC: from a purely objective standpoint, as you put it 833
KC: sorry for the pause, i was papping ab’s little fretting snout..
KC: i think he’s going to message you back in a sec, we’ve pulled over for a minute..
Evading questions - you are the master, oh yes.

[[RP Archive updated, still working on format/linking so may change again soon. Chaptersssss, how you do]]
Tarsus: Watch the road
Your palmhusk emits a series of rapid fire glubs at you, so you continue gently papping Tarsus with one hand until he stops fretting quite so much and peer at the messages with your palmhusk in the other.
And you.
Just.
Grin.
There is something deeply terrifying about the grin of a seadweller who owns in excess of 90 teeth, particularly the grin of someone who has just gotten ideas in their head.
Thankfully it’s not actually directed at anything but your palmhusk, but still.
KC: 833
KC: he is unbearably cute, isn’t he??
KC: …and quadrantless except for me in his pale 833
GK: I âm sensing deeply inâppröpriâte nötiöns ârising in yöṳr thinkpân
GK: Yöṳ stöp thât
You would threaten that AB would soon be completely quadrantless, but the idea of intimidating a seadweller with your defensive banter is too ridiculous to entertain for more than 2.39 seconds. Anyways, you have nothing to be defensive about, because KC is delusional.
GK: Sö
GK: Whât âmâzing destinâtiöns dö yöṳ plân tö reâch ön yöṳr excṳrsiön?
You are the best topic-changer, it is you.
Tarsus: Watch the road
You tilt your head quizzically. “gk is the same person we’re travelling to see, right?? unless you plan on like, being a super mysterious figure in the shadows or wearing a balaclava the whole time, them seeing your face is going to be kind of a forgone conclusion.. i was showing them your perfect troll’real hair, silly..”
You are utterly unpeturbed, but pull back up the grainy picture of tarsus in paint and scribble a cartoon “BLUH” face over his actual face, and send that too.
- krakenCuddler [KC] sentbluhbluhimmysterious.jpg to grossularKeilhaue [GK] -
KC: ok pretend you didn’t see that other one, ab is making frowny faces at me because he’s actually super mysterious and nakking at me for posting his face..
KC: he’s troll batman 8)) don’t tell anyone!!
You scrub at your forehead with the heels of your hands. ‘No, I mean, it’s not that I’m worried about GK seeing my face, but what if that’s not a secure line? And also if we go there and he’s… I don’t know, trying to lure trolls in to feed his lusus or something, we could do a fast fade and come home again before he even knew we were there… Not that I really think he is, but…’
You sigh and slump hopelessly. ‘I haven’t thought this through. Is this a bad idea?’
You lean over and gently snuggle-pap your poor stressed out looking moirail. “you’re forgetting a couple of things.. firstly, like heck am i going to let someone turn you or me into lusus-fodder.. i know i don’t seem it but i’ve dealt with dangerous trolls before, and i’m betting you have too..”
You butt your head against his gently. “second, gk doesn’t give me any creep vibes, and i’ve known a fair few creeps looking for all manner of things out of other trolls - caegers, loot, you name it.. they don’t strike me as the type, and you like them too, right?? i don’t think you suffer from poor judgement.. thirdly, well…” You shrug and smile. “isn’t it worth taking a risk once in a while??”
Wait, what on Alternia did he just-
Files coming through on this line are pre-scanned so you tend to check them out on reflex. Then you get the rest of KC’s pings and experience the joy of second-hand embarrassment. You feel somewhat guilty for even seeing these, grainy low-res phone-pics though they are. You suddenly have a very vague idea of how they became moirails.

No. Did you seriously just think-type that? BAD PIRIKA. THIS IS WHY YOU CHECK YOUR MESSAGES BEFORE YOU SEND THEM. Also holy shit what are you doing trying to get outed just by posting too fast. You hope KC doesn’t catch on that there is no physical way you could type that quickly, or just chalks it up to weird connection latency. Maybe Frohar was right about not letting you talk to people.

You squiggle your brow a bit at the question. Did Tarsus not actually tell GK… a quick confirmation, emphasised by slightly flappy hands and going over a large pothole, that yes, this is a surprise visit halfway across the planet and you are not to mention it.
You are terrible at keeping secrets. This can only go horribly wrong.
