The Aerie is a bastion of security amongst a harsh and unforgiving environment. Located in a forgotten corner of the Windsingers’ domain, the Aerie was once a deserted crater with only carvings and caves and the remains of a mural - one that depicted a strange wind dragon, with curving golden fangs and surrounded by morning mist. Abandoned long ago, it was left behind for good reason. 

The mountains are battered year round by lashing storms and unforgiving gales. The winds, twisted by the landscape, can be a calm summer breeze one moment then turn into a raging rapid the next. Dragons avoided this place like a plague as even the most talented of fliers could be bashed into the rock faces and flung into the valleys far below. Angelues was one such dragon, driven from her home by war. She was desperate and sought shelter in the only place she knew no one would come - the Aerie’s peaks. Unfortunately, even her windborn wings failed her and she was tossed like a ragdoll into a cliff face. 

Angelues was one of the few lucky ones. She was tossed into what would become the Aerie, battered and with a wing permanently damaged. The Aeries’ steep walls sheltered a small valley at its’ heart. Springs rose from the ground, some hot, some cold - filtering through the stones of the great mosaic. Moss and flowers grew thick on the sheer rock, protected from the harsh weather. It was here she recuperated and drew ideas. It was here she founded the Aerie - a place of peace for all who would seek it.

Today, the Aerie flourishes. Great caves intersperse the mountains, sheltering travelling dragons from the gales, those who have not yet learned to fly in the temperamental weathers. Farms, cleverly hidden in the most protected areas and in well lit caverns, feed the fledgling society. Buildings, shorn ingenuously and held up through sheer will, cling to the faces. Others yet are carved into the very mountain itself, like the great palace, nestled at the heart of the mosaic, surrounded by fruit trees, flowers  and gardens.

As far as the Emperors of the Aerie have gone, Zharis is somewhat of an oddity. For one, Zharis was never a member of the Aerie. He was a wanderer who was distraught by the disappearance of his sisters in the war. Feared for his might and prowess, Zharis was a warrior with no rival, both in strength and military tactics. Many sects and allegiances tried to recruit him but he pledged no loyalty to any of them. Such actions made him many an enemy. One day, one such group sent another mercenary to find and drag him back. That day he met his match in Cinderlon. She was as skilled as he and they fought for many a day until finally, they came to an understanding. Battered, bruised and exhausted, Zharis came to realize that this was not the life his sisters would have ever wanted for him. An endless loop of fighting. He was tired of it and by the look on Cinder’s face, she was too.

A pact between them, Zharis took Cinder and they went in search of something greater. Something better to devote themselves to. They found that in the Aerie and in Angelues. The elder took them in and the former Khan, Vanar, saw promise in Zharis. At first Zharis doubted for he had been embroiled in conflict all his life and the good Vanar was a scholar, young but very wise. But, as Vanar said, the great Khans of the Aerie were as varied as those that came to live within it. Always had the Khans been chosen purely on their dedication to peace and to the Aerie. And Vanar saw that dedication in Zharis. So he found his purpose and put to use his clever and sharp mind and great strength to rebuilding the Aerie to the great palace it is today. Zharis took to protecting their borders (for rumors were quickly spreading of the Aerie’s peace and some sought to get rid of it) and put his oldest and most loyal friend, Cinder, to the task while he built a great society with a plan. A plan to invite members of the flights to this peaceful haven and spread word of something better.

To help pacify the tense relationships with the Wind Flight (on whose territory the Aerie resides), Zharis agreed to take Li Shao as his mate and empress. Zharis Khan now faces the challenges of maintaining peace and, where he once cherished war, he has come to cherish the Aerie above all else. He is determined, proud and loyal to his cause and protects all under his reign

FlightRising OCT: Help Wanted!

So I’m setting up an OCT - Original Character Tournament. For those of you that don’t know, these were really popular on DeviantArt. Typically artists, and writers in this case, compete to win prizes! They follow a set of prompts or challenges and draw comics/write stories based on these. A set of judges evaluates the story arc and players advance. 

I’ve never run an OCT before, though I’ve competed in a few. I think it could be really fun with all of FRs awesome artists/writers! So I could use some help to ensure its fun and fair for everyone involved. 

Here’s what you can do! The OCT thread is over here in the Creative Corner! (Click it to go there.) The OCT ideas that I’ve come up with are explained there. If you want to leave an opinion or an idea to improve it, go ahead! I also need more judges (3 to 4) and if you’re interested in competing when its’ set up, feel free to ask to be on the pinglist! Prizes also need to be added for places 1-3 (I’m probably going to add in some art prizes) 

For now, the OCT is mostly in interest check mode. I’m not sure if everyone is too terribly interested right now (and it is a lot of work, but you can sure learn alot!)

Auctioning this boy! He comes with art and basic set of lore and bio. (The icons for the cousin and sister part will work when they grow up... hopefully). He will be the first of a couple to come. The price is currently started at 100,000 treasure. 

The buy price for him is 375,000.
