Snarky Puppy’s “Sylva” Released Today in the U.S.
“Sylva” by Snarky Puppy & Metropole Orchestra is officially released in the U.S. on Impulse Records. This epic collaboration pulls together some of the greatest musicians in the world. Experience the magic by ordering the DVD/album for yourself. Available for purchase here.
“My desire was to make everything about the album different from what we’ve ever done and also from what is expected of an orchestral album. It was recorded 100% live, with no overdubs or studio magic to make things sound cleaner or thicker. 300 audience members joined us for four performances over two nights, wearing headphones in order to hear the music exactly as we, the performers, were hearing it. We stacked the low end of the orchestra with bass and contrabass clarinets and low brass and expanded the string section. We arranged set pieces and the physical bodies of the musicians to form a kind of integrated human-floral forest within which the audience would sit (I m still jealous of the people whose seats were inside of the string section). We tried to create a place where one could forget where they were and simply be surrounded by sound.” -Michael League (Editorial Note on Amazon)

Cory Henry & The Funk Apostles, The Nth Power Preach to D.C.
Written by Andrea Bühler
I walked along the moonlit Potomac River to Gypsy Sally’s, an intimate and atmospheric music venue in the nation’s capital, to join Cory Henry & the Funk Apostles for the D.C. stop on their spring tour.
My friends and I arrived just as The Nth Power was starting their opening set. The US-based soulful, hard-hitting group consists of Nikki Glaspie (drums/vocals), Nate Edgar (bass), Nick Cassarino (guitar/vocals), Weedie Braimah (percussion), and new addition Courtney Smith (keys).
As we danced our way through the joyful crowd, the energy on stage multiplied by itself, building exponentially, until all the heads in the audience were moving to the rhythm. The highlight of the Nth set was the playful call and response dynamic between Braimah and Glaspie, who both showcase their expertise and individual style so masterfully that we in the audience couldn’t help but feel. The band’s mission is to make you connect with something higher than yourself, and as the set came to a close with “Holy Rain” and – my favorite – “Only You,” all I can say is mission accomplished.
After a schmoozy set break, Cory Henry, who you know from memorably mesmerizing keyboard solos with Snarky Puppy (i.e. this and this), made his way onstage with two drummers, a guitarist, a bassist, and a keyboardist who are known collectively (and appropriately) as The Funk Apostles. For my first time seeing this group perform, the introduction was glorious. The set opened with a cover of Marvin Gaye’s “Inner City Blues” with Henry on vocoder that had me singing “Make Me Wanna Holler” for the whole week.
When I asked Henry what distinguishes his band from the rest, he preached a message of playing from the heart and caring about creating a positive energy in the room. He hopes that their music gets people thinking while also making them get up and dance.
Later on in the set, The Funk Apostles launched into another Marvin Gaye cover, “What’s Going On?,” a song with a political statement against police brutality and a message of love and understanding that is just as relevant today as it was when first released in 1971. When the crowd at Gypsy Sally’s joined in calling out, “What’s Going On?” I felt a deep connection to the meaning behind the lyrics. Cory Henry - multitasking with one hand on the keys and a tambourine in the other – had been successful in creating an environment for both breaking a sweat and reflecting on art’s ability to comment on society. All the while, he delivered intoxicating roller coaster-like solos that took us on a ride and the band kept a solid groove to keep us grounded.
Henry wasn’t the only musician to make an impression. The light shone brightly over The Apostles: Andrew Bailey (guitar), Nick Semrod (keys/synthesizer), Cleon Edwards (Drums) and Sharay Reed (Bass).
The night came to an end with a slow, percussive, and smooth performance of Prince's "1999," which reminded us that the world is imperfect and death is inevitable, but life is just a party and we should never stop dancing.
MEET THE LISTENERS
Among the Americana décor, dimmed lights, and post-show bourbon drinks, I got the chance to talk music with some listeners who came through that night. If you check out D.C. based band Marlee in the Mixx, you’ll see that that bandleader Marlee D. knows what’s good when it comes to groove. When I spoke to her after the show, she said Cory Henry & The Funk Apostles bring a fresh feel to technical music. “It’s technically sound and solid, but easy to get across to the people,” she illuminates, “Really amazing and innovative.”
Winnie Pritchett from Miami was impressed with Cory Henry’s ability to connect with the audience. “It was really organic. He did a really good job of making eye contact with you even when he was going crazy. You felt like you were also getting that inspiration and creative strike.” The craziness she was referring to was the clear passion Henry brought to the performance. There were times when he’d jump up and down with enthusiasm either while playing or cheering on one of his bandmates. Winnie adds, “It was fun bouncing around, too.”
The Nth Power made a lasting impression for those of us in the audience, as well. Rosie Russo gushed, “They vibe on so many levels. Their sound fills all the space of music.” Ashley Morse added, “I was floored. They should do their own show. Their drummer was awesome. Girl power!”

WHAT THE FORQ!?!? You want the Forq, but can you handle it? A four man band that begs for the jam. Whoa. Forq includes Chris McQueen, Adam Rogers on guitar, JT Thomas on drums, Henry Hey on keys and Michael League on bass. FORQ has a new album out this July followed by a Summer Tour.
POWER COUPLE ALERT: Jean-Philippe Allard, head of Impulse Records, & Andy Blackman Hurwitz, head of Ground UP Music vibing out to “SYLVA”. Taken at the Universal Music Offices in Paris.
Oh say can you Sylva?
.....and Crosby puts actions behind his words! He surprised us all by coming down to NOLA for Family Diner 2. Get ready world......It’s coming.
The band, whose sound incorporates funk, hip-hop, gospel and jazz, plans a party Monday at the Free Man in Deep Ellum.
When riding the Metro last night, I had the Funky Knuckles as my soundtrack. I like to “let it all hang out” when i listen to music and didn’t realize that the French were staring at me; not in a “he’s a terrorist” kind of way but in a “whoa, what’s he doing?!?!” kind of way. A man tapped me on the shoulder, and while I don’t speak any French, music is the Universal Language between all. He pointed to my red Beats on my head to let me know he wanted him some Knucks. I let him listen and the smile took over his face as his eyes lit up: “La musique est tellement bon quiil me rend tres heureux (the music makes me very happy).

SPEAKING OF BILL LAURANCE..
As Snarky Puppy prepares to play again with the Metropole Orkest in Paris on Thursday, I was telling anyone that would listen about Bill’s Piano Solo about 10 minutes into the Curtain. It’s the 4th song on Sylva. This is the piece i want to play before I die. Bill lays into one of the most raw and hauntingly beautiful piano solos I’ve heard in a looooong time. Since then, I just haven’t been able to get enough of Bill Laurance and have been digging into his solo projects. Dig in with some FLINT and see what i hear. Go visit sometime, not in London where BIll lives in real life, unless you’re near but where Bill lives online. http://www.billlaurance.com/
DIGGIN IN PARIS:
One of the best things about Paris..so many super small boutiques! Mom and pop rule, for the most part, and the mega-brands of the multi-nationals seem more out of place then in this space. If you’re looking for some lost wax and are near the 9th District check out Illogicalll; they only have 5 sections and 1 is Prince, and another is Michael Jackson. For real, you’ll have to visit them for the other 3 sections; they ship worldwide:
