“The last acts are performing, the food tent closes in about twenty minutes, the lady with the puppies already left and I’ve packed up all but the bare minimum.”

“So that just leaves the question of who wants do something fun tonight? I’ve drunk one too many from my own stock to go to just go back to van and go to sleep just yet.”

“There were puppies here and I missed out on seeing them?” Ruby tried not to seem too disappointed but she loved animals and since she wasn’t able to have a dog of her own Ruby never overlooked the opportunity to cuddle one. “Will they be back tomorrow?”

“If you’re up for something fun I’m sure I can help you with that. Did you want to come to the after party with me? I scored two VIP passes and it sure sounds like fun.”

          Emi had never thought about a glitter song. They had a few that could be considered sparkly she supposed but never any that were embodied by it. “Rory won’t like that at all,” she giggled softly, her mood trying to turn for the better. “It’s a summer song, early evening. Neon blue and red, coffee colored yellow lighting.”  It had been a nice day, it should have been a nice day, but it wasn’t.

"All the more reason to do it!” Ruby laughed. “It can be an Emi and Ruby song, just for fun and just for us.” As Emi explained the song’s colours Ruby nodded, making sure to remember every word so that she could see it herself when the song was finished. “Sounds wonderful, Emi. So what should we do now? That is, if you’re fine with boring old me hanging around.”

Rei smiled when she began rambling. He listened intently, looking her in the eyes as she spoke about the stars – a thing that he loved just as much as she seemed to. The stars were comforting but at the same time they also made him anxious. In the ways that the reminded him how small he was, it also scared him. He was a mere spec of dust compared to the stars, even though from his view they were just specs in the sky. He couldn’t help but imagine what he looked like to them. “I couldn’t think of anything better to do,” he smiled, grabbing her hand. “How about we walk instead?” he suggested to her, knowing that this time he didn’t rent a car, “I’ll get some blankets,” he added.

Ruby chuckled softly, glad that her idea appealed to Rei. She enjoyed his company and found it to be a welcomed change from some of the other people she surrounded herself with on tour. “Sounds perfect.”  While Rei retrieved some blankets for them Ruby put together a small bag of snacks and some wine. When they met up again Ruby smiled and gave him a gently nudge. “Hey stranger. So are we ready to see where the stars lead us tonight? It would be a shame to waste this weather and being away from all of the city lights really makes the sky look incredible. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many stars before.”

He buckled himself in, laughing at the girl’s words. “I remember those days,” he grinned, letting out a sigh while he reminisced on his younger years that weren’t that long ago. He had done all the same things in his teenage years and up until he had Ava, really. “She really loves the word kiwi this week and she’ll probably never stop saying it when we’re at the market,” he joked, but was actually serious. She apparently liked the way it felt coming out of her mouth – it was a strange word, after all. Rhett turned the radio on, letting it play quietly in the background for Ava to listen to. It was on the rock station, not the pop. He wanted her to grow up on classics not one hit wonders.

“You have to do everything you can while you still have the energy for it.” Ruby was all too aware that her lifestyle wasn’t one that could last. While she would have loved to think that it was her charming personality that kept her around the music scene she knew that her looks played a role in it. Soon her youth would fade and she would be replaced by younger, more energetic and exciting groupies. She didn’t mind not being unique or special in that way, but what she did mind was that her days on tour couldn’t last forever. “Kiwi,” she repeated, musing over the word. “It is an interesting word. The more I think about words the more they weird me out. All they are is a jumble of sounds that over time we’ve given meaning to. It’s so strange.” Ruby resisted the urge to kick her feet up on the dashboard of Rhett’s car so instead she leant her elbow upon the open window. “I like this song,” she smiled. It was rock music that had caught Ruby’s attention growing up. Although she appreciated all forms of music classic rock had always been her favourite. “If you could only choose one album to recommend Ava throughout her entire life what would it be?”

Aubrey smiled, “I’m glad I’m someone’s favorite. I think I kind of suck at my job. Customers always seem so unpleasant.”  She laughed, “Hmmm. If I was adventure, I’d hide where the people are. Maybe we should go meet some of the locals?”

“All you have to do is be yourself and you’ll easily become everyone’s favourite. Festivals can bring out the best and the worst in people.” Ruby nodded enthusiastically at Aubrey’s suggestion. “Let’s go see what Jackson Hole has to offer. We could always go for a hike because the area around here is beyond beautiful but if you’re up for people I saw a bar not too far from here. Maybe we could even charm someone to buy us a few drinks.”

“Don’t get me wrong, I definitely prefer the tour life with her, and having her onstage with me is fantastic. It’s just different this time around than when I DJ’d Coachella a few years back. It’s much more… Just more I guess. More everything.”

“Ruby, you’re a saint,” Aubrey said as she waved to the other girl who was working this merch venue with her for the day. She ducked under the rope that separated the workers from the customers and joined the other girl. “Seriously, bless you. I have never been so close to dying of boredom.”

“Well we definitely can’t have you dying on me. Don’t tell anyone but you’re definitely my favourite merch girl. No one else is quite as fun,” Ruby whispered as she gave Aubrey a playful nudge. “The world is ours, Aubrey ad the day is ours too. Where do you think adventure’s hiding?”

“It’s been interesting. I’ve had a good time overall so far, and being able to perform with Emi every day is pretty great. I’ve done the tour thing before, but doing it with her is a completely different experience.”

Rocio plucked a pair of sunglasses off the shelf and pushed them up her nose absently looking at the golden haze everything took on as a result. She looked at the curly haired woman and tried to place her but nothing came to mind, so she ignored it and answered the woman’s question anyway. 

“Not really my style, that synchro DJ club music,” she shrugged detachedly, “But they had the crowd going wild, pretty good performers for DJs, interesting,” she admitted wandered closer to the woman after putting the shades back. “You got a ride to Wyoming?”

“What is your style?” she asked. Ruby listened to anything and everything she could. Some days she craved a good blues bass, other days an upbeat pop song. She found it all beautiful in it’s own unique way. Giving a small shrug Ruby replied, “I’m not sure. I was thinking of hitchhiking my way there. You meet some very interesting people that way.” It was hardly the safest form of transportation but Ruby knew she couldn’t always tag along with the musicians. Sometimes a friendly roadie would invite her along but Ruby rarely asked for anything from anyone.

Tonight was one of the few moments where Bora would tune everyone else out, anyone that was to disturb them would be met with disinterested remarks. Leaning against a wall, they began humming along to a song by Glass Animals.

Ruby only realised Bora was standing by the wall when she ran into them. Her eyes flew open and she placed a hand on Bora’s arm as she quickly apologised. “Oh my goodness I’m so sorry! Really, I am terribly sorry. I was in my own weird, frantic bubble and I can’t believe I just ruined your zone.”
