And then there are the rules. It’s gotta be entertaining. You gotta tell a story. You can’t be too obvious but, you can’t be too obscure either. You can’t double up on songs by the same artist, unless, of course, that’s your theme. Anyway, a good compilation, like so many things in life, is hard to do.

Butterfly McQueen, Vintage Actress by John Springfield
McQueen was a trained dancer, and she was given the name Butterfly as a tribute to her constantly moving hands.
She hated the character of Prissy, who she played in “Gone with the Wind.” She only took the role because it paid $200 a week so she could buy some furniture and vowed never to take a role like that again. But the role followed her around like a curse.
Frustrated with racial type-casting, she quit acting in films in 1947 but appeared in the TV series Beulah (1950), where she played a maid. When not appearing on Broadway, she worked as a taxi dispatcher, a real-life maid, a companion to an elderly white woman, a seamstress, and a department store salesperson. She had a degree in political science and was honored with the “Freethought Heroine” award from the Freedom From Religion Foundation in 1989.
“Now I am happy I did “Gone with the Wind. I wasn’t when I was 28, but it’s part of black history. You have no idea how hard it is for black actors, but things change, things blossom in time.” Butterfly McQueen
