Still Untitled series - Shape N.27 - European Oak - 47 x 44 x 14 H ( cm ) - 🍃
Live edge hollow form - burl turkey oak - 25x25x17H (cm) - 🍃
Skew chisel Christmas tree project 🎄
Today I’ve got something new, basically a year to add to my own history. I’m 42 now not yesterday when I was just 41. Looking at the live edge bowl I was shooting yesterday and shown here, it has just the same graphic features of the number 2, I mean a long sinuous curve and a well pronounced corner. Strange coincidences 😅 never thought about that before typing 2 in this post - 🍃 #contemporarycraft (presso Giorgio Romani Woodturning) https://www.instagram.com/p/CnfSwIRjGEg/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
DINOS II - olive root - 43 x 43 x 28,5 (cm) - - - The name DINOS refers to the name of an ancient greek container following my idea to use archaic shapes to recollect the viewer to a more recognisable form letting him concentrate on the medium itself. The medium is an olive root that has been recovered from the field after it was brutally uprooted. I wanted to share a dramatic feeling I lived, belonging to that moment, using the medium as main reference. The character of the root itself shares a sacredness that in my opinion is the foundation of an aesthetic that escapes our understanding but still we can recognize - 🍃 #contemporarycraft (presso Giorgio Romani Woodturning) https://www.instagram.com/p/CmpMUlIDb3x/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Turkey Oak Burl Vessel N.2 - 24,5 x 16,8 h (cm) - - - the last week I haven't been very present here on Instagram, I had a course last week, then I got sick having to give up an entire week to spend in the company of @rochekeh and finally today I got back in studio to complete some works. The piece shown here is one of those and a very special one. I will add some pictures of the bottom later because there the wood is spectacular, with a wide spalting inclusion beside the burl. For those interested I had published a video of the making of a few posts ago and also the piece is now available from my website, link in bio - 🍃 #contemporarycraft (presso Giorgio Romani Woodturning) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cl6pwTfDnK9/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Uprooted - Olive root, tuff - mm 485x450h - - - "If we surrendered to earth’s intelligence we could rise up rooted like trees." - Rainer Maria Rilke (presso Giorgio Romani Woodturning) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ckq_HcSjLBU/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
DINOS I - Roots series - olive root - 33x33x21 cm - - - I can never thank wood enough for all the emotions and experiences it has given me over the years since the first moment I decided to choose it as a medium for all the shapes I needed to express. So many years have passed, my life up to now has been completely modeled around that initial choice, who knows if at the time I would have ever imagined how long the road was to go, but today I know that it is longer than I could have imagine, I find no destination on this journey that every day is filled with new adventures and discoveries, it is truly a splendid path of knowledge that seems tailor-made for me, for how I am and how I love to live this anonymous page of history, supporting nature sharing its beauty - 🍃 #contemporarycraft (presso Giorgio Romani Woodturning) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ckg1JaLjRo7/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Autumnal still life 🍂 - latest oak vessels out of series - - - One of the most beautiful aspects of a craft in my opinion is that of having all the skills necessary to be able to tackle any project with that particular medium - this means that you can get distracted every now and then by facing different and even fun paths, but which nevertheless satisfy the soul - not everything comes from the hands to be exhibited or sold, often what is born as a gift then turns out to be the best of the works, I could almost dare to say "where there is heart there is beauty" - Happy colourful Autumn to all - 🍂 #contemporarycraft (presso Giorgio Romani Woodturning) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ckbjpa6DUSD/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
ROOTS series - DINOS III - olive root - 530x530x350 mm - - - One of the latest piece from the Roots series, soon on display next week at @arthus_gallery - - - Since I began the first production of the Roots series, the intertwining of thoughts and ideas has led me to develop the very idea of the series inwardly, never deviating from it but rather maturing that idea. To date, what I initially wrote about the series seems to lack the depth that I feel today when I happen to talk about it with the people who happen to be in my studio. Therefore, I will soon return in the next days to broaden the discussion on that here, also because the next productive season will continue on the Roots series - 🍃 #contemporarycraft (presso Giorgio Romani Woodturning) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjGe5qNjiTM/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Turning a thin bowl out of oak - 🍃
One of my essential sources of learning is failed pieces, and everything that ends as I had not foreseen. Observation however plays the main role in that. In and out of my workplace I am surrounded every day by pieces left apart or thrown away, mostly defective ones, almost finished, some just roughed and soon discarded, other completed and unfortunately ruined by a fall, and then logs or half logs almost abandoned to the weather because I hadn't had time to rough them before they started losing moisture or also the north wind caught them at night by surprise. Sure it might seem like a big mess, and in fact I too had to learn to live with it finding a compromise with my idea of order, but then in reality all this is for me like a huge encyclopedia from which I can draw important and detailed information whenever I need it, it is the desk of my slow and silent personal research and it is the point from which my experience and my dialogue with the material acquire shape and depth - 🍃 #contemporarycraft (presso Giorgio Romani Woodturning) https://www.instagram.com/p/CgCwBcHjs15/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
UPROOTED II - olive root, tuff - 32 x32 x 30 (cm) - - - Here is an excerpt from an interview I gave last week: "I can certainly say that my approach with the material has changed radically since I returned to my homeland. I understand that my interiority has reconnected with a thread that was somehow broken, that thread kept my childhood and adolescent experience connected to my present. These last two years have led me to a necessary distortion of feeling, today I perceive the material as a different entity from how I was used to perceiving it so far. The main point is that my research is focusing entirely on this relationship between me and the material, and through it I am able to express and condense the quantity of ideas and feelings that seek out an outlet and that otherwise would be stuck to engulf my unconscious. I know that this research is slowly maturing into something other than what I could have imagined and perhaps I would have expected just a few years ago, the road in front of me is back to being more straight and the goal now coincides with a horizon line that tends to infinity " - 🍃#contemporaryart (at Giorgio Romani Woodturning) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfgPtooDKFd/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Shape 26 - from Still Untitled series - european oak - 59x56x16 (cm) - - - Everything is going slowly this week, the heat is really scorching these days, I have several jobs in progress and some need to be sketched with a chainsaw before I am able to start carving them but it's crazy to think about turning the chainsaw on when the air is close to 40 degrees celsius. After 20 seconds the plastic handle of my Stihl starts to get so hot that my left hand starts to burn. I hope a little fresh arrives soon because I need to get into the new project I have in mind - 🍃 #contemporarycraft (at Giorgio Romani Woodturning) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfWQOFEDcN4/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Working on Ex Anima project - - - Some external factors are forcing me to move forward faster on this project, first I need more space inside the workshop to host new lathes, second they asked me to remove some olive roots next to our house to be able to access the neighboring fields with a huge combine harvester - not really agree but that's okay - 🍃 #contemporaryartist (at Giorgio Romani Woodturning) https://www.instagram.com/p/CehGJkyDSog/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Still Untitled series - Shape 22 - European Oak - 470x250 - - From the Still Untitled series this piece marked a milestone in the research that drove me. It is no coincidence that it is my favorite from that production, in it I find condensed all the forms I had drawn in that period and above all fulfilled the main dialogue with the material. A peculiarity of this work is that it has two opposing faces, and looking at it from one side to the other it is as if they were two different works. This piece is now displayed and available through @u_m_a_n_o_a - 🍃 #contemporarycraft (presso Giorgio Romani Woodturning) https://www.instagram.com/p/CeYISJBjCTL/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Aria II - european oak - - - In the last week I took a little break from teaching to complete the last works that will soon be available. I was finally able to resume work on the current project Ex Anima after the material has stabilised, in the coming days I am going to start other pieces for the same. I'll tell you later about the project itself. Things, however, proceed surprisingly at a slow but steady pace, Natura Docet - 🍃 #contemporarycraft (presso Giorgio Romani Woodturning) https://www.instagram.com/p/CeTyhRJj20q/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
