can we talk about how “peace” by taylor swift is the perfect hinny song? because i really wanna talk about it.
Our coming-of-age has come and gone
Suddenly the summer, it's clear
I never had the courage of my convictions
As long as danger is near
In my opinion this can be seen as a comment on how Harry and Ginny have been forced to grow up so quickly because of all the terrible things that have happened to them. Now it’s the summer after Sirius’ passing and things aren’t getting much easier.
And it's just around the corner, darling
No, I could never give you peace
I mean c’mon. Darkness and evil have been present in Harry’s life since he was a baby. And when you consider the fact that he is a horcrux, it literally lives in him.
But I'm a fire and I'll keep your brittle heart warm
If your cascade ocean wave blues come
All these people think love's for show
But I would die for you in secret
The devil's in the details, but you got a friend in me
Would it be enough if I could never give you peace?
Even though Harry can’t give Ginny “peace”, he is still going to love her unconditionally even when the “ocean wave blues” come. The line “I would die for you in secret” gets to me especially because I really do think Harry would die for Ginny. Like without hesitation. When he saw Bellatrix almost hit Ginny with the killing curse, he immediately changed course to help her.
Your integrity makes me seem small
You paint dreamscapes on the wall
I talk shit with my friends
It's like I'm wasting your honor
You paint dreamscapes on the wall brings me back to a line in Half Blood Prince where Harry mentions that Ginny makes him happier than he can remember being in a long time. I see the line “talking shit with my friends, it’s like i’m wasting your honor” as a reference to not being able to tell Ginny about his business with Dumbledore yet being able to tell Ron and Hermione more about it. He doesn’t like keeping things from her but he knows he has to.
And you know that I'd swing with you for the fences
Sit with you in the trenches
Give you my wild, give you a child
Give you the silence that only comes when two people understand each other
Okay now this line I see as coming from Ginny’s perspective. It comes off to me as her giving Harry reassurance. She’s going to fight for him and with him. She’s not going to leave when things get hard but rather get through it alongside him. “Give you the silence that inly comes when two people understand each other” - You can’t tell me that Harry and Ginny don’t just get each other. When Harry breaks up with Ginny at the end of Half Blood Prince she doesn’t cry or beg him not to, she simply just understands.
Family that I chose now that I see your brother as my brother
Back to Harry’s perspective here. I mean do I even have to explain this one? Ron is Harry’s brother and the Weasleys are his family.
'Cause there's robbers to the east, clowns to the west
I'd give you my sunshine, give you my best
But the rain is always gonna come if you're standing with me
There’s danger in every direction. Being with him is never going to be easy and he knows that. The last two lines are my favorite seeing as they are incredibly true to Harry and Ginny’s relationship. I imagine this as Harry telling Ginny he’s going to give her his best but isn’t sure if he’s worth it. (of course he is tho).
Would it be enough if I could never give you peace?
Ginny doesn’t think Harry could never give her peace :(
