Anyway, I decided I wanted to be a gummy gator now instead of a gummy shark. That's all.
I'm a fan of double-meanings in whump dialogue--especially if the phrase can be said by caretaker and whumper.
"Put down the gun." - caretaker soothing a defensive living weapon whumpee / whumper thwarting caretaker's rescue attempt
"Shhhh." - a parent caretaker consoling a young whumpee after nightmares / whumper gagging a crying whumpee
"Oh my god, you're bleeding!" - caretaker upon discovering a stoic whumpee's hidden wounds / a sadistic whumper mocking whumpee after a brutal torture session
"I've got you." - caretaker comforting whumpee post-rescue / whumper gloating about whumpee's capture
The possibilities are endless!
Something that is so good; bruises.
They're often in addition to bigger things, but just bruises on their own are amazing too. The painful way they were inflicted, the evidence of what happened.
Just a Whumpee with a black eye is great.
Bruises around their wrists. Hidden on their ribs. Tighs, side, stomach.
Bruises on their throat, clearly showing what happened.
Also great for whumperless whump! From a fall, an accident, a crash, etc.
Describe me them bruises in whump!
very attractive things you should make your caretaker do
Leaning down so that they can hear whumpee properly. (Works best with a good size/height difference.)
When they watch whumpee from across a room, especially at a party where they’re obviously not listening to the people talking to them.
They’re walking a little in front of whumpee and when they realise, they immediately slow down so whumpee is walking next to them.
Pulling whumpee onto their lap when there’s no more space on the couch.
When they’re laughing with whumpee but their gaze keeps flickering to whumpee’s lips.
That moment when someone becomes even slightly threatening to whumpee and they step in front of them protectively.
They’re constantly studying whumpee for any signs of discomfort or pain. Always looking at their face or hands…
Gently guiding whumpee out of the way by placing their hands on whumpee’s waist.
Just hugs…long hugs, especially if whumpee falls asleep mid-hug, when they feel so safe and so comfortable.
Letting whumpee play with a piece of their clothing or their hands or even their hair.
When whumpee initiates any form of intimacy and caretaker’s breath hitches because oh god…it’s happening.
Whumper using kissing as a weapon.
Whumper using Whumper’s phobias against them. Afraid of the dark? Your punishment is being kept in a room with no light. Afraid of spiders? I’m forcing a tarantula to crawl on you. No matter what Whumpee is afraid of, Whumper will find out. And God help them when they have to be punished.
Quiet Whump Prompts
1. They don’t scream. Their face says it all
2. Whumpee’s whole body is shaking and pulsing, but they don’t make a sound
3. Their eyes are filled with tears but don’t give a big reaction
4. They bite down on their tongue hard enough to have a mouth full of blood
5. “You don’t have to be brave”
6. The first sound they finally make is a quite whimper
As someone who strongly prefers short-term captivity in whump, half a year at complete maximum, I kinda wish there was more representation of whumpees who’ve spent decades with their whumpers, especially in fics/media that focus on recovery
It gives a reminder that it’s possible to spend so many years in abuse and still heal, to still find happiness once it’s over
When you write something, ask yourself: are there enough scenes of a character kneeling in this? And the answer is no. Add another.
Whumpee who had just gotten saved/rescued by their group or Caretaker, but their boundaries are so oddly specific and detailed that they decide to make an entire PowerPoint presentation specifically for Caretaker on how to properly take care of them without them getting upset, hurt (physically or mentally) or getting flashbacks to their torture.
Saw a post that went "Some people can be so quiet about their pain, that you forget that they're hurting. That's why it's so important to always be kind." and my first thought was --- yeahhh a stoic whumpee that nobody realizes how bad they're hurting until they break
whumpee whose injuries are made to look like a suicide attempt. when they insist that is not the case and that it was whumper who did it, no one believes them. why would they after whumpee was found half-dead on the floor the night before?
(bonus points if its because whumpee used to be suicidal in the past. they had gotten better since but no one believes that now and they treat it like a relapse)
caretaker finally gets to whumpee to rescue them, but whumpee is just in so much pain from their injuries. they can barely speak. whumpee is screaming, sobbing, whimpering, begging for relief, but there's only such much caretaker can do.
caretaker tries to comfort them while also trying to free them/tend to their injuries/etc. whumpee being at least somewhat aware that caretaker is doing their best, they're just in agony.
being in the whump community is genuinely so funny bc someone will unironically say some shit like “i’ve really been into head injuries lately”
whumpee who's embarrassed by a ridiculous amount of things during recovery. their wounds, their clothes, the skills they haven't learnt thus far, their fear, their everything. having general humans needs also. caretaker who's so mortified and downright scared by this it gives them a reality check
character b is curled up on their side, shaking in pain. Suddenly, they feel a pressure on their hand, and character a comes into view. “Hey, hey, kiddo,” they breathe, their voice shaking. They squeeze their hand.
character b’s heart drops- character a doesn’t hold hands. If they’re holding hands, someone is dying.
Subtle signs of conditioning
Saying yes before they even completely take in the question. Saying yes even though they absolutely don't want to.
"Are you sure you want that?" "Yes." "It's okay if you don't." "No, I really do." While deep down they don't. Caretaker can kind of sense it, but Whumpee just won't budge no matter how many opportunities they are given to take back their yes.
Monitoring the emotions and reactions from people around them to predict what they want from them so they can just automatically do that thing.
Only being able to confidently belief something when they get outside validation that it's okay to believe that thing.
Tensing up when someone comes in the room, subtly adjusting their body language to fit what they think is desired. Maybe they sit up straight, stop fidgeting, fix their tired face, smile. Whatever was drilled into them during the whump.
Always aware of other people's eyes on them and always feeling perceived. Maybe even when they're all alone.
Feeling like they are not completely in their body when the conditioned behavior kicks in. Watching themselves perform the conditioned behavior and feeling like they aren't in control. A soft voice in the back of their head is alerting them that this isn't really what they think and want, but it's so muffled and far away that they hardly register it.
Dissociating during the conditioned behavior and still feeling out of it a few hours after. Then a headache kicks in that they hadn't noticed but that had probably been there the whole time.
Being conditioned not to pay attention to their body in general and not noticing their own limits.
Doing the conditioned behavior, giving into something, saying yes to something, and only realizing afterwards that wasn't what they wanted. Genuinely believing they actually acted from their true self in the moment.
Having a very fragile sense of self. Being confused about who they are. Panicking about small decisions.
Having their beliefs and feelings switch based on the people they are with, like they are an emotional chameleon. Never knowing when an opinion is truly theirs.
Telling themselves over and over again that they are not gonna do the conditioned behavior but when a trigger comes they are doing the behavior before they even notice.
Making small progress in not doing the conditioned behavior but falling back into it when they are stressed.
Falling back in the conditioned behavior when they meet someone who outwardly looks like Whumper, even though they treat them completely different.
Having a harder time letting go of the conditioned behavior around certain people and genuinely not knowing why. Picking up subtle clues from the person's demeaner that make Whumpee feel like it's safer to do the conditioned behavior. They could be accurately perceiving something subtle or they could be completely wrong about the person.
Being able to not do the conditioned behavior if they internally prepare themselves. But when a trigger comes up unexpectedly they automatically fall back into it.
Not doing the conditioned behavior and their heart immediately starts racing. They get a little dizzy and their brain goes foggy. They try to act normal, but they feel like everyone notices.
Not being able to express spontaneous emotions.
Feeling ashamed when they recover a bit and some of their conditioning falls off.
Internally panicking when someone outright tells them what to do because they already feel so powerless. Having moments where they swing the other way and actually become extremely stubborn and uncooperative.
Feeling disconnected from the people around them because the conditioning is so ingrained that that's just who other people think Whumpee is. Maybe it's even who Whumpee think they are. But deep down it feels like nobody really knows them.
