I guess I’ve been living under a rock for a long time while I’ve been having a long break from Overwatch, and Tumblr as well, so it’s not until not I noticed that our dear cowboy has to change his name due to some controversy within Blizzard.
Honestly I find it stupid about a name change. First of all, I never knew of a real McCree in Blizzard, or if I knew in the past then I had already forgotten about the real guy and just relate the name to the fictional character. Second, just because a guy in real life is problematic it doesn’t mean the character has to be as well, you should be able to tell between two completely different people. I mean, many people have the same names.
When I first read the blurb from Blizzard about why McCree chose to change his name my first reaction is that it felt so forced. But thinking back to past dialogues in the game, it... kinda makes sense. Example:
Sombra: “Pleasure working with you McCree... if that is your real name.” McCree: “Don't know what you heard, but my name's not Joel. Best remember that.”
HAL-Fred Glitchbot, in Hollywood: “Jesse McCree? What a terrible name for a cowboy!”
So it’s already been established that his real name wasn’t Jesse McCree.
Anyhow, I’m still gonna call him McCree just like I always did for over five years and he’s always gonna be Jesse McCree to me.
(Also will those dialogues stay in the game or will they just gonna be outright removed to fit with his new name being used in the game?)
