it wasn't like she had a choice in the matter she did as instructed , careful to use the ground to help herself down . she hadn't expected to react in such a visceral manner , yet she couldn't help herself . even now , she could feel something throb inside her throat , her heart ready to jump at a moment's notice . maybe if it did , she'd feel better / other than cracking her ribcage open and pulling everything inside out , she couldn't imagine another way . the only thing holding her back was the girl , whose kindness she had repaid by having a panic attack .
❝ I'M SORRY . ❞ there was a fat chance the other had heard her , at the speed she had taken off . in fact , she didn't know why she was apologizing , who she was apologizing to . to the kind girl with icy cold hands , or the girl she had once been with icy sparks glittering inside her eyes ?

eyebrows furrowed the more hannah spoke for that strange feeling of being from a different world had returned in full force . she couldn't put a face on any of the names the other had brought up , try as she might to focus and rumage through every corner of her mind . she couldn't help it : for a minute , it seemed as if the distance between the two had grown / and she might as well be standing on one side of a canyon and hannah on the other . however , whereas in the past she would have turned around and walked away , she decided to stay still for now .
❝ SO IT'S NOT LIKE THE MOVIES THEY'VE RELEASED SO FAR ? ❞ she recalled seeing a couple on the shelves of various video stores . maybe she had just misunderstood the other .
✰ META / HEADCANON : THE HUNGER GAMES AU.
as most of you know , i can be quite impressionable . and it has happened again , for i have decided to make a thg au ! the reason why i have picked this series over any other at the moment is because of the large number of muses i follow from the series . therefore , it only makes sense to put gwen into this universe so she has an easier time fitting in with these muses , especially as her home series is obscure and the material difficult to find . as a head's up , this post will be a work in progress as i add details .
gwen is from district 6 , known to the capitol as the transportation district . according to the map of panem featured in the hunger game adventures , district 6 is located in the midwest area of north america , primarily centered in the states of michigan and wisconsin and the southern part of the canadian province of ontario . district 6 borders district 3 ( to the south and east ), district 9 ( to the northwest ), and district 13 ( to the east ).
born in the part of district 6 that used to be ontario , fourteen years old gwen jones is considered by her peers to be a strange girl that doesn't fit in — doesn't want to fit in . for most of her life she has been on the run , moving from town to town within the district with her mother . since transportation is what district 6 specializes in , moving around is easy … until it isn't anymore .
a few weeks before the yearly reaping , gwen's mother becomes withdrawn , refuses to eat , and eventually is unable to work and act as the household's head anymore . as a result , gwen winds up struggling to find work and keep a job to care for the two of them . she claims something is wrong with her mother , but due to morphling being a district-wide problem as a result of the unstable environment brought by district 6 being largest district in panem , in terms of population , no one takes her claims seriously .
the jones' bad streak of luck continues as gwen is then reaped for the games . climbing the steps to the podium , things immediately go haywire as people start whispering to each other , louder and louder … only for someone to perk up , guinevere ! the crowd's whispers and booing grows louder and louder until gwen's mentor appears to calm down everyone : merlin .
in this version , guinevere is a tribute from many decades ago and gwen's ancestor . guinevere was trained by merlin , one of the district's first winners . however , she earned the ire of the district when she fell in love with lancelot , a boy from district 4 . their alliance led directly to the death of guinevere's fellow tribute , as well as her own passing . as you can tell , she isn't remembered fondly … and now , her descendant who looks the same as her and acts the same way as her is reaped . hence the moving : seing the similarities between her daughter and their ancestor , karen wanted to make sure no one would notice until gwen reached adulthood . and that plan has now officially failed .
just like people in district 6 , the capitol is shocked and amazed at the similarities between gwen and guinevere … and to better market her to the public , gwen's team leans into this fact , claiming that, 'chivalry isn't dead , it's been reincarnated , and this time the girl will be a hero' . needless to say , this angers gwen beyonds belief , and she lashes out whenever she is compared to guinevere , arguing she is her own person .
did she win , did she lose ? only time will tell … and the odds , if they are in gwen's favor .

"yeah. are you okay...?" maybe she'd overdone it with the excitement. but in her defense: the book's really good. and it's taking everything she's got not to launch into specifics. still, the queasy look on the other girl's face worried her. "you look like you're about to faint. do you need to sit down? do i need to get you a glass or a bottle of ice water?" what are cryokinetic abilities good for if not for situations like these?"
❝ I'M FINE ! ❞ gwen surprised herself by saying it . the words had leaped out of her throat , unbidden , unrestrained . deep down , it left her mortified / how quickly she had answered the other when her answer was clearly a lie . ❝ sorry , i didn't mean to … ❞ didn't mean to what , she wondered . scare the other ? make her believe she was frail , weaker than she really was ? ❝ get dizzy all of a sudden . i think i should take you up on that glass . ❞

to the person who just dropped the first nine episode of guinevere jones in french on youtube: le jour où je découvre qui tu es, je vais t'épouser.
"of course! it's about this girl named bree. she's just started university with her friend, alice. and whilst she's there, she finds out that all the arthurian legends are real. except, she's also still reeling from the loss of her mom. so it's a lot to handle at once. but it's a really good book. which also reminds me: i need to finish the second one sometime soon because i'm pretty sure there's gonna be a third. maybe a fourth too."
her senses blanked out when the issue of the protagonist's mother is brought up when they returned , it was a rush : her pulse was beating copper against the walls of her throat , her body felt as stiff as a board and there was a taste in her mouth that tasted like unripe fruit and rusted metals . it didn't seem like a coincidence to her , how similar her story was to the girl inside the book . because arthurian legends were indeed real / and she was living proof their descendants were here , unnoticed by all . the mention of bree's mother having passed away did sound too similar to her own circumstances to feel like one , however .
❝ I-IS THAT SO … ? ❞ her mind is at once far away and inextricable from her skin . the sensation of being fourteen / of being held back as her mother is wheeled away from her sight .

SHE WISHES TO BE A PUPPETEER , the grand master. always looking for her next puppet. that was all others would be now — pawns and fodder in her great plan and continuous grasp at royalty. maybe regina would need the aid of another powerful magic user one day ? the woman will take any advantage she could , and one had so conveniently fallen into her lap.
❛ of course not. so many adults overlook a child's potential. but not me. you're powerful , i can tell. ❜ such statement punctuated by regina's fingers tapping against the tip of gwen's nose.
if only that power could be nurtured by the right person. someone who could take the girl under their wing and ensure her power manifest. ❛ but no matter how strong you are , you could be more if you had someone to guide your way. ❜
that was the cruelest irony of them all how people envisioned her when it came to treating her as a pawn . in that aspect , if she could see past the woman's eyes , past her skin and bones in order to stare at her core , she'd come to find she was not so different from her current mentor . both viewed her in a similar fashion : she was the reincarnation of a legendary , mythical queen of a kingdom now long gone when it was convenient to blame her / but a naive , impulsive twenty-first century girl when they wanted to use her . could she ever be free of others' plans for her ?
she lets the other tap the tip of her nose , the blonde merely blinking when she feels the pad softly collide with her bones . she was no stranger to flattery , and she knew herself to be powerful in her own right . yet , thanks to the queen whose powers she had inherited , she liked to think she could smell trouble coming . and right now , she could hear sirens blasting inside her mind while cherry red colored flags were waved beneath her eyelids whenever she blinked .
❝ WHAT ABOUT MERLIN ? ❞ raising her hand , she tried to swat the other's hand away from her nose . even if she failed , the mention of the wizard should do the trick , establishing that she was no fool and certainly no cheap parrot doomed to perform parlor tricks for its master .

❝ NO , I HAVEN'T READ IT YET . what is it about if i can ask ? ❞ years had passed since she had returned merlin's stone to its rightful owner . there was no fighting inbetween classes anymore , no magical training in the glade / and she wouldn't have it any other way . ❝ I'M STUDYING LITERATURE , ACTUALLY . medieval studies' my minor , but i'm more interested in the history part than the old text part . ❞

❝ I TEND TO WATCH THOSE ON TV WHEN I CAN . ❞ yet another way in which she felt different from her peers . watching girls her age do their hair , their makeup , make their way to the theater and gossip loudly while chewing on cheap popcorn drowning in butter … such little things felt almost alien to her , yet she craved them badly . she wanted so badly to belong somewhere , anywhere . but that would have to wait until morgana was defeated ; until her mother was freed from her curse .

“If it makes you feel any better you’re in good company– a lot of my regulars tell me it’s not their year every single year.” That fact… might make Gwen feel better? At least a little? Everyone has those days kinda deal. “And nope, not at all- this place is going on 13 years. We like to keep a low profile though– like, the lowest profile. No advertisements of any kind. Most of the folks here found us accidentally.”
would it be rude to say it didn't make her feel any better ? that try as they might , no one could understand the burden on her shoulders ? at the time , the choice between inaction and action had been so easy … either she fights for a chance to save her mother , or she gives up on her . people never understood that part , why she was so hellbent on rescuing her mother by whatever magical means necessary to free her from that demon's influence … but the truth was simple / WITHOUT KAREN , SHE WAS ALL ALONE IN THIS WORLD . her mother had done everything in her power to keep her safe , to protect her from the evils that seemed to follow them from town to town , continent to continent … and gwen was determined to do anything in her power to return the favor .
❝ you're not kidding about that , ❞ she remarked , eyes roaming across the room , taking notice of details here and there . she couldn't help it : after a lifetime of it , you learn to distrust every place you set foot in . ❝ i think i would have walked up past it , had i not been told about it by a friend . ❞
❛ I love him, I do. But I can't deal with his bullshit anymore. I understand life hasn't been easy since Lazer Team disbanded but he needs to get his shit together. I can't keep babying him, you know? It was better to just dump him. ❜
mindy is right because of course she's right . what had happened , what was happening was not her fault and she ought not to be punished for it . but on the other end , it was easy for her to imagine how zach must have felt / how difficult it is to be rid of the responsabilities you shouldered for so long . it begged the question , who were you supposed to be once you had fulfilled your purpose ? the thought sent a shiver down her spine . ❝ i don't blame you for it . i'm sorry things turned out this way . ❞
