Every now and then when I
settle down to sleep, my mind
will take a moment to remind me
of things which I’d rather not
spend the energy remembering
Cascading through the abyss
of ancient thoughts I’ve
long since buried
my brain seeks to show me
a constant reel of regrets
Like a whirlpool of dark ichor
the thoughts pull me in
surrounding me and sounding off
constantly, invading my peace
tempting me with the worst of actions
I’d rather not cast myself off a building
The knife in my hand is for cooking
and nothing more
I wish that my own mind
would simply think
of a brighter future
