I do know this is so absolutely besides the point because what a gift a blessing a delight to have a seminal piece of media of Taylor yapping away about her craft and how she's honed her skills since she was a teen and astutely, presently, gracefully commenting on all the sharp edges of the industry and I will be going over this interview many many many a time for all the insightful things she says but gosh she really is just so pretty like wow.

One of the first pieces I made for Rapunzel’s murals for the movie Tangled. I had been struggling mightily to find a style that felt authentic to an astutely observant, curious girl locked in a tower. I procrastinated a lot, circling the literal blank page, unable to arrive at anything that felt true.
What finally shifted things was going inward. I started using my own daily life as inspiration and connected with Rapunzel as a living, breathing friend—someone I knew well and had just spent a weekend with. (I’ll share those sketches on my Substack soon, I promise.) It was only then that the block dissolved. Rapunzel felt less like a character and more like a guide, leading me to medieval illuminated manuscripts and to Charley Harper’s bright, coherent illustrated biology books from the 1960s. Somehow, those two seemingly disparate influences came together and shaped the visual language of the murals.
I return to this image whenever I’m blocked (a frighteningly frequent occurrence) as a reminder to keep going inward. There is always something beautiful waiting to be uncovered. Thank you for being here - more of this soon!

Taylor, in named one of NYT Mag’s 30 Greatest Living American Songwriters, gave a rare lengthy discussion of her craft, the fickleness of fame, the machinations of the industry, and navigating how to create art for public perception. It was a fascinating glimpse into her artistry - I look forward to giving it more listens to parse through everything she discussed.
Naturally, the visuals that paired with the interview were most of note for me. Such is the power of fashion! Knowing this interview would be a filmed sit down adds intrigue to the intention of choosing certain pieces.
I first noticed how this styling seemed to visually extend her most recent outings. There's an echo to the black top and creamy skirt formula from April 8. While incorporating the vintage opal bracelet by Darlene De Sedle, part of a suite that was originally created for Elizabeth Taylor, first seen on April 27, alongside April 8's necklace stack. These repeat elements makes this feel familiar, even if it's new!
The asymmetrical hem of the top, the skirt’s tie detail, and her hair swept over one shoulder worked in tandem to create a long, fluid line that was best appreciated in the wider shot. I wondered if this was a deliberate framing choice on the part of the crew? In the pulled back frame, the outfit feels relaxed and loose - like an exhale. This projects a markedly different image than, say, a tailored trouser set might have. Here, everything feels soft and languid. Between the fabric and drape, I thought the ensemble tied into Taylor’s overall demeanour of feeling grounded and at ease. What a treat it was to hear her speak so candidly, passionately, and confidently about songwriting - all while composed in an outfit that befitted her sense of calm. As a counterbalance, the neutral palette, sharply minimalist strappy heels (I swooned!), and sparkling jewels did the work to bring polish to the look.
The last few years has seen Taylor really gravitate towards the love of a stack. It was fun to see that affinity canonized in this interview as she discusses her career and songwriting craft. The pieces I’ve recognized so far are all repeats from Taylor’s personal jewelry collection. Her Audry Rose stack we’ve previously seen her wear in November 2025 and more recently earlier this month on April 8.
The most recent additions I noted are her opal Darlene De Sedle pieces - which she also wore while out in New York City last night (April 27). The bracelet and ring were part of a suite sold via Christie’s in 2011 which fetched $125,000USD. Its original owner? Elizabeth Taylor. Many thanks to my friend Marion Faisel of The Adventurine for confirming that of Elizabeth’s widely amassed jewelry collection that she purchased many Darlene De Sedle pieces through the late 1990s. For Taylor, the provenance of these pieces to Elizabeth, combined with the stone in question, has a doubly layered connection to The Life of a Showgirl - “Opalite” and, of course, her most recent single “Elizabeth Taylor.” The power of fashion!

just wanted to chat with you about taylor's outfit from the NYT interview because i'm so obsessed! the look is pretty accurate as to how i imagined Adult Taylor would be dressing back in like 2008-2011; feels like a slightly softer, more polished take on the bohemian style she was gravitating towards and playing around with during those years. makes me wonder if we'll see more of this style from her going into whatever the next "era" or "chapter" will be, or if she was just dressing for the occasion (as she is quite skilled in doing). loved reading your commentary on the look, as always 🫶
The moment I saw it I had heart eyes. I totally feel the same way with that Adult Taylor appendage.
Actually, one of the outfits it reminded me most of is the below - a rare goodie from 2012 that doesn't get its flowers often enough (she's wearing Free People and vintage, en route to a lunch with Mark Foster pre-RED). The colours are obviously different, but there's something in that relaxed Stevie Nicks 70s empowered queen energy about it that rings similarly to this outfit to my eye. The feminine lace, the laidback drape. It's just very California Queen Cool and I love this look on her.
