Being in my 20s Iāve wondered plenty of times when it became legal for me to do most of the things Iāve done in my adult life like: have a credit card and bank account in my name, live with my partner out of wedlock, buy my own car, take out my own loans, etc. And I never considered so many of the rights I have werenāt available to my great-grandmother.
And then, honestly, I never even considered those things could be taken from me until the Handmaidās Tale came out and the entire premise of the show was women lost their rights slowly and then all at once.
I know, I know, Iām showing my white girl, US citizen privilege here. But honestly. I never considered these rights to be so new- only a few generations old. And I never considered how easily they could be lost.
Regardless of your option of RBG (she was far from perfect) you have to admit she helped pull women so far closer to equality than ever before. And itās important to recognize that if we want to preserve our rights and keep pushing forward to be even more inclusive than RBG we have to wake up and reckon with the reality of not just our generation, but generations past and future. We canāt take our rights for granted and we canāt ignore those who are still suffering because theyāre not afforded the same privilege as us.
