Part 1 Behind the Scenes w/ Farewell Flight: Santa's Pub
Note: This was started at 5:00 AM Sunday, June 23, 2012 and goes in reverse chronological order. It was finished at ? because of the work that pays the bills. Apparently, I was designated the official "historian" for all the people that didn't get to be there. I'll try to make this count and do my best imitation of a heepster music blog. But if it sucks, please know that no one paid me to write it. And be forewarned I write how I act. Which is to say borderline abrasive, random, complex, and smartass. But I do it in such a loving way! :) My live show is so much better!
Heyo! It's 5 AM, and I'm just now getting home. Exactly one hour till I have to leave for work. But I'm okay with it. Man, those PA boys like to party! Or rather, they love karaoke and acting a fool as much as I do. Either way, thanks for making my Saturday night awesome.
Studio wrapped up at 11 PM or so...can't really remember at this point. After which, I got to invited to join those that were left at guitarist Rabbit's favorite spot in Nashville. A classy little joint called Santa's Pub.
Which, if you couldn't tell by the following picture, is run by a guy who looks like Santa Claus. And it's Christmas 365 a year. And you could tell Rabbit treated it like such when his face was lit up with excitement over being there. Every night was like a present that only sweet baby Jesus and a room full of drunken rednecks could fully appreciate. [I apparently fall under the category of either baby Jesus or drunken redneck.]
When we got there, the place was packed with the classiest people this side of the Mason Dixon line. And it took 30 seconds into the first song, before realizing that Rabbit has been here quite a few times. Shit he was called by name to do the closing jingle! But I have no complaints because he is an amazing performer and wildly entertaining to watch. I loved every second. Not many people can keep the party going with a slow 90s jam like him. And the moves! Highlight was Christmas Shoes by Newsong. Hoping somebody got that on tape. [I'll give you a Boys of Summer clip for it.] Until then...picture this clip except with more movement. Because Brian knows how to work a stage and didn't use a 9 year old boy with a really high pitched voice as a crutch. [SPOILERS] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Vf5ZFDxmQQ
Overall, it made for the best Saturday night I have yet to experience in Nashville. Granted, I don't go out much. But I still believe fully that is the best there is and want to share that joy with everyone I know. In fact, everyone on Sunday got asked Have you heard of Santa's Pub? Apparently, I have a lot of joy to spread. Hoping for another round with the Farewell Flight guys soon.
Travel Tip: If you end up venturing that way, please bring a non expired ID (wasn't me) and a roll of 1s. Some people roll with 20s but not anybody in this place. I would bet money on it. Please break up your benjamin's before rolling up here. And if you want your Patron and Grey Goose and shit, you'll be disappointed.
To join in on karaoke, which is pretty much the only thing you do here, write your request on the sticky notes on the tables and bribe the lovely lady MCing to cut the wait time- TIP TO SKIP if that special moment hits before your turn. And if you have withdraws from the weekend, karaoke happens as much as Christmas around here- all the damn time. [Which is approximately 7 days a week.] And smoking is allowed inside.
