crazy news + opportunity for artists
(for the opportunity, skip straight to the “•”)
hellooo! I don’t know how to preface this so I’m just gonna jump right into it…basically I’ve been writing quite a bit of poetry lately to serve as a coping mechanism and way to get feelings out without having to get directly, verbally personal with anyone, and it’s helped me find myself and heal a lot. I’ve decided to do something with all that work and will be compiling it into a lil poetry book.
this is something I wanted to do for myself, to get in touch with my emotions and be open with who I am and to just like…climb that mountain to pursue my dreams, but I made the official decision to attempt publishing because I thought “this has helped me, maybe it can help someone else.” I always love reading things I relate to (it makes me feel less alone), so if I can do that for even one person, that’d be incredible.
• BUT BESIDES ALL THAT, I also owe it to you guys for helping me realize what I’m worth and what I deserve—thanks so so so much for that. I thought it would be amazing if I could engage some of you guys in it too since so many of you have helped me, been a rather big part of my life, and have encouraged me to take this leap, so that this can be like an all of us project.
this is an opportunity for artists, anyone into doodling at all, or people just wanting to participate—everyone really, you don’t have to be super duper talented. unfortunately there is no prize (If I had a steady income, there would be) except for shoutouts and being featured in my poetry book with credit for your work. I apologize for that, but if you’re interested in entering a contest for fun, or because you could get published, this is good for you.
I won’t be revealing any of the pieces inside for you to draw to, but I would strongly suggest creating according to the themes love, hurt, and worth (these are the chapters/sections of the poetry book).
if there are little to no entries, this contest will probably be cancelled, so please note that there are not any guaranteed winners or selected artists.
if you’ve read this far and want to participate, I’m going to list the rules below. and if you don’t want to participate, please boost this or consider tagging someone who might want to. thank you!
1. draw in whatever style you like! make it you—don’t worry about trying to do what I might like, because the art part isn’t about me. preferably, don’t include a background
2. you can submit as many pieces as you want!
3. post your photos and tag them to the hashtag #alhwritescontest18. this is the only way to ensure that I’ll see your submissions, and I recommend messaging them to me as a backup
4. you are not required to draw fitting the themes of love, hurt, and worth, but I highly recommend it as these are what I talk about most in my poems
5. include explanations of your art if it doesn’t clearly fit love, hurt, or worth. abstract and unique and different doesn’t mean bad, I just wanna hear about it!
6. the amount of notes (likes, reblogs, etc) does not matter. literally at all
7. if you draw something specific to “love,” know that it might be chosen but it might end up fitting in a different category, like “hurt.” all three themes interchange throughout the book, and I’ll assign art to the poems I feel it best fits.
8. All submissions are due by March 1, 2018. this might be extended, but probably won’t be, so try to have everything done by then if you’re entering
i might have to alter the sizes of your work to accommodate the pages, but other than the sizing of your artwork, it will not be edited or manipulated in any way, so submit your best pictures as you would like them to appear. clearer, better quality photos (I recommend scanning the work) are more likely to be chosen. also, digital work is accepted.
there are no guaranteed winners or selected, especially if there are few or zero entries.
credit will be given by including a page with all the artists and the page number their work is on, or including your name and/or @ beside the work. in whatever way is decided, I will ensure you get credited for your contribution (I’m an artist myself, I understand how frustrating it is when people take your work without crediting you)
shoutouts and potentially becoming published, but nothing physical: overall, no prize
if there are any other questions, please send me a message or an ask. this is my first time hosting a contest, so I could’ve left something out.
