Setting Boundaries at Work: How to Tell Your Human Captain Your Not Comfortable Doing Mind-Melds.
1. Make sure your captain understands what mind-melds are.
Let them know that you aren't just probing another creatures mind, you're giving it full access to your own as well! This vulnerable process isn't always the best decision, even for Vulcans who do want to mind-meld.
2. Remind them of consent.
Consent is necessary for any mind-meld to go healthily. Remind your captain of the risks involved and the violation the alien may feel if you initiate this to attempt to communicate. While telepathy is normal for some species, for others it is an entirely foreign concept.
3. Remind them it is your own body and your own decision.
Even if the creature would not take offense at the vulnerability, you may not find it logical to give that vulnerability to someone else. That is your choice entirely. While it can seem logical to give your captain what they want in order to make the mission move forward, remember there is also logic in remembering one's own limits and the harm when pushing past them!

I keep coming back to stare at this; it’s so clever, so beautiful. We know in our hearts, don’t we, that we’re right to love our mad old shows. That they really do speak to us and move us powerfully.
that they certainly do! i'm continually stunned in my study of antiquity how frequently i'm knocked off my feet by an emotional thread that i first experienced in star trek. i feel that it's because human beings are always working through similar challenges, of course, but also because there truly is something special in these shows we love. they really do play upon the heart in a beautiful way

The other day, a mutual contacted me to share that they've begun learning sign language & that my designs that include ASL was part of their inspiration. It was the best news. Inclusivity, that's the mission.
Cheers, friend. 🥃🖖🏻
