OH HEY, PERCEVAL FANS!!!!!

Did you know there are 2 music albums by a band called La Nef that sets the story of Perceval to music? (And some of the tunes are from folk music. I don’t recognize most of them but I know they use ‘Fear A’Bhata’ and ‘Dives and Lazarus’, for example)

I couldn’t really find any info online about the lyrics or which songs correlate to which parts of the story, BUT… through a combination of looking at the original medieval french text while listening to the songs + using translations, I was able to figure out a few of them and i’m like …80% sure i’m right :-)… but I also don’t know french so i’m sure this would be easier if I did 😅.

Here are the ones I’ve figured out so far:

“Air des Chevaliers” (youtube) (spotify) this song actually had someone post a translation on youtube :-). It’s perceval hearing the sound of the knights’ armor and being scared of it.

“Biaux fils” (youtube) (spotify) is when perceval’s mom is like ‘dear son where have you been??’ And perceval tells her he just met some knights

“Ah! Lasse, comme suis mal baillie!” (youtube) (spotify) is his mom saying she doesn’t want him to be a knight because of his dad.

“Biaux frere, bienvenu soyez” (youtube) (spotify) is king arthur telling perceval about how the red knight is evil and spilled wine on the queen’s dress.

“Vallet, si tu vis sans age” (youtube) (spotify) is the girl who wouldn’t laugh telling perceval that he will be a great knight some day

“Mettez les bas” (youtube) (spotify) is the red knight asking if any of arthur’s knights want to challenge him, and perceval demanding his armor instead.

I have been reading more arthurian stories but the thing i’m most obsessed with is Perceval by Chrétien de Troyes.

Perceval is like…. what if you had a medieval knight but he was a stupid teenager with ADHD who is also a mary sue that can kill everyone in a single hit and is the best at being a knight with zero training. He gets scared of the sounds of metal armor and thinks its demons coming after him. He doesn’t know his own name until like 3,000 lines into the poem and even then he’s just guessing what his name is and somehow gets it right. He seems to love his mom and always talks about her but he also saw her faint one time and was just like ‘oh well, that’s probably fine. I’m leaving.’ ..???????

Ive only seen like 5 posts on tumblr about perceval i need everyone to read perceval i am begging you please please please please please please please please please plea-

I have been thinking a lot about how at one point Cathy2 tells Heathcliff "Nobody loves you—nobody will cry for you when you die", and about how the book ends with Hareton sitting next to Heathcliff's corpse all night sobbing and then burying him the next day, and him being the only mourner there other than Nelly. And how shortly before Heathcliff dies, he talks about how Hareton looks like Catherine and compares him to her ghost.

@charlemane yesss thank you for noticing my symbolism…. >:D … other gravestone details: Edgar’s grave still has some dirt showing to make it seem more recent. Cathy’s grave is completely covered in grass, and the gravestone has some slight green moss and like a small crack in it because its been there the longest (and also to give sort of ‘being reclaimed by nature’ vibes). I also made Hareton directly line up with Cathy’s grave on purpose 🙂‍↕️.

I have been reading the medieval story ‘Merlin’ by Robert de Boron. (like merlin from the king arthur stories) Merlin’s backstory is absolutely wild in this version. He was almost the antichrist, but god stopped all that. BUT… god also let Merlin keep the sick demon powers…

I love when people go through and like all of my wuthering heights comics in a row it makes me happy that new people are still finding them :D

I was thinking about how Dracula characters might look and I wanted to do designs for Lucy and Mina.

There's a line in one of Lucy's letters where she says that she finds fashion boring and doesn't keep up with it, so I made her dress simpler and slightly older-fashioned. I also tried doing different cursive styles for each of their names, to be like 'oh maybe this is what their handwriting looks like', which was the hardest part of this drawing because i have really bad handwriting.

Random thought, but I was thinking about how a lot of Wuthering Heights movie adaptations cut out the 2nd half of the story, and I think it could be interesting to have a movie that focuses mostly on the second half instead of the first. Like nelly would be telling cathy2 stories about her parents and hareton’s childhood as some flashback context, but the movie would be mostly focusing on cathy2 and hareton and linton. Idk i think that would be a neat change of pace.

This would be extremely interesting to me because Heathcliff is practically a different guy by part 2. Catherine's death pretty much directly coincides with Hearhcliff becoming master of Wuthering Heights so a lot of adaptations tend to miss out on his transition from "kinda sorta romantic hero if you just casually ignore everything he did to Isabella" to "revenge-driven child abuser with a master plan". Which is a SHAME, if you ask me, because while I love part 1 of the story I think Heathcliff's at his best when he's at his worst, you could say.

A movie that adapted the second half of the novel primarily could portray Heathcliff almost as a boogeyman-like figure, coming into Cathy and Linton's lives after their (admittedly comically short) time together, taking Linton away for like, what, four years? And so on and so forth, with Nelly being pressed into telling Heathcliff's story as time goes on to get Cathy (and the audience) up to speed.

From romantic hero to almost something like a horror movie monster without the makeup or the murdering, tragic hidden backstory and all.

Yeah I agree!! I think the way you could play with the audience perception of Heathcliff could get really interesting. Parts of his backstory being introduced at different given times in the script could really change an audience’s perceptions of him. Instead of lockwood being the audience stand in (in the sense of ‘guy who doesn’t know anything about this family and gets the story explained mostly chronologically’) I really like your idea that Cathy2 would become the stand-in because both her and the audience would be unsure as to why Heathcliff is acting so evil and what his goals are. Keeping his backstory mysterious at first would definitely give it horror movie vibes in a really cool way, I agree. It would highlight how bad of a person he became in a way that the movies which cut out the second half of the story don’t.

I also agree with you that he’s the most interesting when he’s at his worst, especially because of all of the backstory that drove him to be this way. Which is why I started thinking about this ‘2nd-half-of-book-movie’ idea in the first place- because I think the beginning of the story works so much better as context for the entirety of Heathcliff’s life, instead of just stopping the story when cathy dies.

Thinking about it even more- I think one could argue that the story doesn’t even work if you don’t include the second half, for this reason: one of the main themes of the book is Heathcliff’s despair over the fact that he has to keep living after Cathy is gone. If you end the story right after she dies, it creates the opposite effect: the audience gets a sense of finality and closure that, in reality, Heathcliff wouldn’t get for another 20 years.
