It's set in the real world but with one major change: a second race of people known as chimaeras (edit, changed the name
They're anthropomorphic animals that, despite their looks, actually only really share looks and a few instincts. For instance, gummygoo in this universe, while not liking the cold, isn't cold blooded.
The global population of faunus is roughly 1/7th of humans, or about 1 billion faunus.
Generally stronger and a little taller than human, they often end up in labor intensive jobs. Also have high healing factors. Can't regrow limbs, but they can survive and heal from wounds that can kill humans.
Generally have low birth rates. Hybrids between humans and faunus are possible, but incredibly rare.
Have a unique DNA sequence that cause them to have random physical characteristics separate from their parents/breed. This is theorized to help prevent inbreeding.
The main threat, and the thing that ended the world is the abstraction virus. (I know, so clever and original)
Its not a zombie virus. It's more like 28 days later. Those infected are still alive... Which makes far more dangerous.
It has a 57% chance of turning those infected into abstractions, a 42% chance of outright killing them, and only 1% of the total being survived without immunity.
The virus itself starts out affecting the hosts emotional and mental state before slowing mutating their body. It spread easily because everyone just excused the emotional and mental problems as just stress or other mental illnesses.
Those that abstract retain some of their memories which lead some to believe a cure is possible.
Calm and docile at night or in low light. Intense light or light of the UV spectrum causes them to become more violent over time.
those that are immune to the virus will purge it once from their body and then never get it again. It does still cause mutations, but the person still looks mostly normal. They do get a boost in physical abilities however.
Infected bleed black blood. That includes those immune that contracted the virus once.
Ok, now some lore on the characters.
Full name: Pomni Chernovskaya
Russian/wasian mix. Mom was half white/half Korean. Dad was Russian.
Age when the virus fully hit: 20
Primary skills: exploration/searching, lock picking, pistol usage, some martial arts, general high intelligence, expert math skills.
Weaknesses: anxiety, indecisive at times due to overthinking, while emotionally intelligent, social skills are rusty from disuse, temper, lack of physical strength...for now.
Was in college when the virus hit. For the first few months, she stayed on campus while almost everyone else fled.
Ran with a small group while there, but broke off after a while. Spent the next two years mostly alone. Safer that way.
Traveled at night, found shelter during the day.
The overall goal was to try and make it home to find her family: mom, dad, and her twin sister.
Only problem, they lived on their other side of the country.
2 years in, she and Jax found each other.
Initially distrustful of each other. They were forced to work together.
Eventually, they warmed up to each other and Jax started following her like a lost puppy.
He taught her how to properly shoot and fight. Both abstracted and bandits.
Over the last three years they finally made it to her home... Parents abstracted, sister MIA.
Fell in love along the way. Fully established funnybunny here folks.
Rabbit faunus with wolf characteristics. Sharp teeth, longer claws.
Current Age 23 (just turned)
age when virus hit: 17-18
Latin heritage. Born in Florida. Total Florida man.
Primary skills: hunting, long guns, Melee, stealth, cooking, observation
Weaknesses: moody, mental health due to loss, emotional stability, social skills to an extent, generally an asshole (though much less than canon), light weight with alcohol (all faunus are).
Born in Florida, was in high school still when virus hit.
Was the only man in the family, so it fell on him to take care of them (in his mind at least)
Mom taught him how to cook.
Had a sister named Jazmine (Jazz for short)
(sister is basically femjax(daisy) but If it was evil Jax)
Family was attacked by bandits while he was gone. Only found his mother's body.
Left the state afterwards, tried to track the bandits but failed.
Met ribbit (real name June), a frog faunus from Louisiana. Became fast friends.
Became bandits themselves. Kept the murder to a minimum... But it happened.
Ribbit got more and more nasty over time and began to cross lines Jax wouldn't.
Turns out, she was infected. It just took a long time because she embraced it.
Jax ran from her when she fully abstracted. Blames himself.
When he first met Pomni, he wanted to just leave her. Found out she was good at surviving and honestly thought she cute (denied that for a year)
Eventually, the desire to try and keep just one person alive won him over.
Fell first, kept it a secret for months.
Taught her how to shoot better, how to hunt, and to fight with her fists. She had some training, but no real experience in an actual fight.
Been officially together for two years. Very protective and jealous. Pomni kinda likes it. It's also useful when dealing with other survivors.
Put down her abstracted parents for her and then helped her bury them.
Formerly normal circus that fell on hard times, after the outbreak, it's become a small survivor haven.
Run by the slight insane but well meaning ringmaster Caine, it's taken it a few survivors over the years.

Surprisingly safe thanks being on a island in a lake connected only by a stone bridge.
Besides surviving, the circus is trying to rebuild this old train to use as means of traveling. (Think the Aurora from metro Exodus, but with more cars.)
