“what’s your dream job” im so glad you asked. picture this. i am the lone employee of a strange and mysterious tchotchke/bookshop in the middle of nowhere, full of fun and interesting things that i am allowed to take for the low low price of free of charge. i get one, exceedingly interesting, customer per hour. i work no more than twenty hours a week and am salaried 3 million dollars

I played hockey when I was a kid. I was the only girl on my team, so from a very young age I heard constantly how "girls can't play hockey" and "girls aren't as good as boys" and all the usual shit that is intended to diminish women from the very beginning of their lives.

They were supposed to be my teammates and my peers and my fellow hockey players.

But I was just "a girl" to them.

All I wanted was to play and have fun like any other kid, but in that space I was treated differently and made to feel like I didn't belong.

I eventually quit.

I wish now that I hadn't, that I had stuck it out and kept playing anyway, but I refuse to make any little girl feel ashamed or think she is at fault for not wanting to continue showing up to a place where she is purposefully excluded and made to feel badly about herself.

These experiences and feelings aren't new to women. They aren't exclusive to athletics and none of us are free from them even at the highest level of any sport or career or field of study.

We have every right to be angry. And I am. I'm so fucking angry.
