Another semester was beginning, and Leo was anxious to see the GSU once again filled to the brim with life. Other students were all moving into their dorms, reconnecting with old friends, finding their way around. It was nerve wracking.
He couldn't bear the idea of being asked how his summer was, having to give a generic answer.
"I was at an internship, I barely went outside."
Instead he tried to find himself a spot at The Corner, to lurk a little longer before facing his housing assignment. He ordered a coffee, though when his name was called and he was handed a smoothie. He looked at it for a long moment, too uncomfortable to correct the person who had made it.
Instead he turned to the person closest to him.
"This uh... this is not what I ordered... do you want this?"
Leaning forward on the table he was sitting at, Damon scrolled through Instagram, seeing a lot of familiar faces posting their back-to-school pictures. Someone was speaking to him, causing him to pause and look up. Glancing at the smoothie, he offered a smile and a shake of his head. “Oh, I’m good,” Damon responded, holding up the bottle of soda that he had grabbed from the nearby vending machine. “But thanks. Uh, pretty hot outside though.” He nodded toward the window where not many clouds were visible. “I’m sure someone’s bound to want it?” A nice, cold drink to brave the heat.
as socialable as he is — his social battery is starting to malfunction, hitting empty then rebooting. a constant swirl of activity and overstimulating has his eye twitching .. just a bit. not to mention he can't hear, not really, pissing him off a'bit. eyes catch damon in the distance and turns slightly to the left, ensuring he will actually ( somewhat ) be able to hear his friend. hands fiddle idlily with the strings of his hoodie, anxious about the upcoming semester. “kind of? i think i had it worse last year, to be honest ---” which is true. because he bogged everything he could into a singular year and nearly drowned in it. “nothin’ i can’t handle. it’s mostly math and all that.” nose scrunches. “that on purpose? the more chilled out year, i mean.”
“Math, huh? Well, I wish you luck though. Hopefully you have good teachers,” Damon commented, knowing that sometimes the difficulty of courses really could come down to how they were taught too. He shook his head at the question, sitting down beside Bryce. “Not really. I think it’s just a graduate thing? Less courses to do but ones that are just more focused? More research involved and the like.” He really enjoyed geophysics though, and was actually really good at it, so at least the passion was there regardless. He paused, noting again the high volume of activity surrounding them. Flashing his friend a reassuring smile, he shrugged. “Hey, if you wanna bail, we can go somewhere else.”
noah shut the door behind rezan and leaned back against it, allowing it to hold her steady. she didn't know what exactly to do. she knew what she wanted to do. she wanted to ask to be held. to just erase everything and pretend they were all the way back before they'd broken up. before things started to worsen in her life. there was genuinely nothing she wanted more than a break from the confines of her mind. but that wasn't just something she could go ahead and ask for.
noah's head snapped up at rezan's words. she wasn't sure why, but she wasn't expecting the other to apologize. maybe because noah felt it'd been her own fault things had ended. rezan had every right not to come see her. this made rezan's next words even more surprising. "of course i wanted to see you. i mean, yeah things were messy, but..." she shrugged, struggling to find the right words to express their situation. "i mean yeah we were... girlfriends, but we were friends too, right? i mean i know how stupid that sounds coming out of my mouth after running in the opposite direction all year, but i dunno. it's complicated," she huffed, walking over to sit down on her comforter. "i wish i had better words to use and better things to say, but i'll be honest even i don't know how i feel. do you?"
Were girlfriends. Were friends. Rezan understood what she meant but the past tense still managed to sting, a reminder of all the time that had been lost. It was hard though. It was complicated. Especially when their relationship had some memories connected to Michael, who Noah had permanently lost. “Sometimes there aren’t always better things to say,” Rezan murmured in agreement. Do you? She considered that for a moment, but sighed. “No,” she admitted, matching Noah’s uncertainty of the right way to go about this. Then came a contemplation laced in her expression, something that she had been wondering all day.
“Noah, why did you call me?” The question understandably may have felt sudden. Rezan’s tone was careful, lingering with a wonder. But it wasn’t accusatory. She was merely just… curious, for it had been a long time since she'd last seen Noah’s name light up her phone screen before that day. “I would’ve still answered. I would’ve still come,” she promised, trying at clarification because she didn’t want Noah to feel like she shouldn’t have messaged. “I just wondered what made you want to. I was just… surprised, that’s all.” Why now, today? What brought it on, and why Rezan?
status: open [@gsustarters] location: welcome home cookout
Another semester, there was always a weird adjustment to settle back into dorm life, but Skyler couldn’t help but feel relief as her shoes clicked against the familiar pavement. The amounts of course work that would soon flood her desk would be worth it, the blonde was free from the pair of eyes that judged every movement she made.
It wasn’t something she needed to worry about anymore, gone, the thought didn’t matter. Skyler looked around the welcoming set up at gsu and spotted that the line for food was nonexistent. Sure, she knew grilled cheese wasn’t typically served at a cookout, thankfully they were willing to make an exception.
Her stomach growled, almost as if on cue as the wrapped sandwich came into view. She took off with it to the nearest table and immediately tore open the packaging to take a bite. “Ouch. Hot” She began, exhaling while the warm cheese slightly burnt the roof of her mouth due to her impatience and swallowed. “Fuck.” The blonde continued before meeting someone’s gaze. “It just smelled too good.”
Many students had been treating the water slides like the quad was an actual water park. Rezan had been actively avoiding the area yet still managed to get a little damp as careless peers were running around and yelling. You’d almost think this was an elementary school. Huffing in amusement, she shook her head and continued walking around. She occasionally greeted a few familiar faces she came across, and then paused when she noticed Skyler wolfing down a sandwich. Eyes met and Rezan couldn’t stop the soft laugh. “An interesting choice,” she commented, taking a seat beside her friend.
Raising an eyebrow, she hummed in thought. “Hmm, is this what you’re considering for a debate team project? A presentation on why grilled cheese should be provided at cookouts as a default choice?”
noah was never the type to be too proud to go back to an ex, but she wasn't the type to do something like that lightly. when she'd picked up the phone to call rezan, it'd only been after weeks of back and forth. of pulling up her contact, staring, and then chucking her phone on to her bed and screaming into her pillow. she'd been through a lot. sometimes with trauma, inevitable self-destruction ensues. noah would argue this probably was one of the better choices she could've made. it was rezan. even after all was said and done, rezan hadn't done anything malicious.
when noah heard the knock at the door, she was on her feet and pulling open the door in a flash. she withheld the gasp that threatened to fall from her lips upon seeing the other. she knew it would be odd, but she didn't think it would be this odd. it felt like no time had passed and nothing had changed. and it wasn't fair that rezan was still allowed to look this beautiful and be on noah's doorstep and just... not be her girlfriend. "hi," she greeted finally, the word coming out almost in a sigh of relief. she stepped aside to allow her ex inside. whatever were to happen, noah didn't care for an audience. "i--" she found herself at a loss for words, something that didn't happen to her often. "things have been really hard, rez," she decided, hoping the rest could be deduced.
A year of avoidance, or at least strained attempts. They would see each other around campus, as it was hard to avoid something as common as that. But being in each other’s space at any point had brought complicated feelings too, the push and pull of trying to stay away—but also maybe not wanting to at all. And so, when the door opened within seconds of her knocks, the sight found a way to kickstart Rezan’s heart as if it had been on a long standby. A pause, eyes unable to stop from flickering over Noah before eyes met. Beautiful, which wasn’t a surprise in itself but Rezan just didn’t expect to see her up close like this again without one of them trying to bail. “Hi,” she returned, inhaling the quietest breath to hopefully find a calmer composure.
With a warm thank you murmured, Rezan carefully stepped inside the dorm. Things have been really hard, Rez. The nickname’s soft familiarity was almost enough to forget that anything had changed. Almost. Brown eyes shut for a moment at the somber knowing that it was around the one-year anniversary of Michael’s passing. “I know... I’m sorry.” Multiple more beats of silence followed. “And I’m sorry for not reaching out more,” Rezan admitted slowly. “In person, not just through text. I wasn’t—” Jaw tightened around the memory of how – and why – it all ended. “I didn’t think you wanted to see me.”

it didn't feel the same, but no on expected it to, right? it wasn't horrible today but it wasn't normal. addie smiled brightly as she turned around from taking her latte from the barista who she had been talking to for longer than necessary considering the amount of people waiting for their drink. "hey," she smiled, taking a few steps over to them. "are you getting a drink? we can grab a table and catch up for a minute - only if you're not in a rush or anything like that!"
The line was a little long but Damon didn’t mind it, kind of lost in thought with earphones in. Whatever conversation the barista was having with Addie went over his head. It wasn’t until the fellow graduate student approached him when he took an earbud out. “Hey,” he said back, pausing his music all together when she offered café catch-up time. “Oh, sure.” An uncertain look drifted up to the menu. “Ah, any recs? I don’t usually get much coffee here. Was probably just gonna get a muffin or something.”

damon had been one of the few people that aj thought really got her; neither of their demeanors were ones that screamed out for attention. the two were misfits, perhaps. she felt seen by them and that was everything to her. he had also been a shoulder to lean on after michael’s death and having that support meant so much, considering her parents hadn’t reached out during that time. after much of the grieving process, the pair continued to hang out & aj had grown to harbor some romantic attraction towards her friend.
of course, that was then.
now, the brunette smiles almost too genuinely as he greets her, a symptom of having a crush that made her feel like she was in high school again. “it, uh — it goes!” aj replies, her tone of voice sounding more cheerful than moments prior. “how’re you? i – i’m sorry for not reaching out over the summer, shit kind of… hit the fan.”
Everyone kind of lost something a year ago, in some way, shape, or form. Damon may not have been close to Michael, barely would’ve called them friends honestly, but the loss still had an impact regardless. A looming cloud of gloom had settled over the university then and some of it still lingered. They could feel it in their friends too, especially AJ. He never considered himself to be good at the advice thing, but still tried his best to be there for her. As a shoulder, an ear, a presence. When people got closer like that, their absence was especially felt. And Damon had felt it over the summer.
“Good, thanks. Um—” He cut himself off when she apologized, clearing his throat and glancing downward. “Oh. Yeah…” It was kind of two anniversaries being dealt with for her. The would’ve-could’ve been relationship one but also Michael’s passing, which the school was in the midst of now. “It’s all good, you don’t have to be sorry,” Damon tried to assure her. “Just glad to see you. Missed you at the gym—it was kind of boring without you.”
"God, don't even remind me. Do you remember when they played Clueless last term?" Vera questioned with a mere appalled look. She may not seem like it, but she's a sucker for any of the oldies... or these so-called bad movies that seem to play often.
"Who in their right minds think that's a bad movie? Sure, there's, like, hardly any plot but it's entertaining," and she could go on for hours defending it, "Whoever runs this wouldn't know a good movie even if you slapped them in the face with one."
“Yes, and I also remember the announcer saying a completely different lead actress’s name,” Rezan added, thinking back to when one student even called out something like um actually, it’s Alicia Silverstone in an irritated tone to correct him. And the announcer had been left standing there like the awkward standing person emoji. “Whoever is in charge may just be randomly selecting movies without much thought,” she pointed out. “Which is already annoying incompetency in itself, but at least they’re not taking something like Love Actually and calling it a horror film.”

The quad was busy with students enjoying the welcome back festivities. Using his old skateboard, Damon was riding around near some outside steps and benches, having just finished a hamburger curtesy of the cookout. He ended up nearly tripping when attempting a trick on one of the rails, but caught himself. A little ungracefully but alas. A soft huff released from him, and he moved some stray hair out of his face. “So,” he started, wandering back over to Bryce. “You got a busy semester? Mine doesn’t seem to be as loaded as last time.” Eyes shifted over to the inflatable water slides as a few students’ gleeful shouts echoed.

And just like that, the campus had become bustling with walking traffic. As well as gradually increased chatter over the presence of some unknown blog user named Phantom. However, to Rezan, these supposed threats were probably just pranks from a bored student wanting to rile peers up. So, her main focus had just shifted toward more actual important matters. Finishing up getting binders and planners for courses ready for the semester start. The upcoming beginning of the year meeting for the debate team. Her ex-girlfriend—wait. Oh. The unanticipated text to meet up perhaps managed to surprise her more than the mystery blog.
Thankfully the startle couldn’t be felt nor seen over the phone when she had responded with a time she’d be free. The afternoon rolled around, Rezan making a short trek around the Phantom Suites building after having gotten settled in her own dorm earlier. The halt came outside room 1101. A soft sigh graced the air before Rezan finally knocked on the door.

"You know, I'm actually offended that they consider Cat Woman to be a bad movie. I loved this movie growing up. It was practically one of my favorites."
A flock was beginning to fill the quad’s greenery with blankets and snacks and conversation, the so-called bad movie getting set up to begin. With an agreeable sigh, Rezan sipped at the fruit punch she’d just gotten from a nearby booth. “You’re right,” she replied, offering a quiet laugh as she glanced around. “Though I also recall them using a few popular cult classics in the past for this category too. So, I can’t say I’m actually surprised for this year’s continuation of questionable choices.”

she hadn’t talked to anyone all summer, opting to isolate & ignore her texts or phone calls — it was easier that way. aj’s grief had peaked at the end of the spring semester, just around what would have been she + michael’s anniversary, if they had been together for another year. that was when she closed in on herself; doubled down on studying & was rarely seen practicing her volleyball skills at the recreation center.
she thought that if she hid, no one would ask her how she was or how her summer went. of course, when hiding in plain sight, that wasn’t an option. the feeling of somebody’s presence removes her from her reverie, brown hues coming in contact with the figure standing near her.
reluctantly, aj broke the silence, “uhm — hey.”

First year as a graduate student would be—well, how different would it be? Damon had gotten so used to the university over the years that a higher grade level didn’t really make him feel separate in any way. It was like when people asked if you felt different after turning a year older. If there was any real uncertainty happening, it was over the weird Phantom user situation. And also the course syllabus he grasped in his hands, wondering if the professor had made one or seven typos on exactly which books they should be getting. Well, an adventure around the library it would take then.
Furrowing his brow, he wandered the space for a minute before noting a familiar face. “Hey, AJ,” Damon greeted with a small smile, adjusting his backpack strap on his shoulder. He mulled over his thoughts for a moment, hoping he hadn’t been bothering her. “Ah, how goes it?”
