James didn’t really like admitting it. He was supposed to be better than this. And if he couldn’t perform his duties, then he was pretty much worthless. Granted he wasn’t as young as used to be.

He winced as he made himself sit up. “Just think I overdid it last night. I’ll be fine shortly.”

Peter looked over at the other and he moved to do his push up. sweat rolling off his skin. “ Are you sure about that? You look as if there is something that you want. The Alpha smirking at his blushing mate.

Well, he supposed he didn’t have anything to lose. Since it was just the two of them in the room. “Well, I suppose there is something I’d want. The thing I always want.” He started off by saying as he set the tablet aside to really focus on his Alpha now. Every flex of muscle. Every bead of sweat.

Whether James was ready to see it or not, there was a difference between the killer that Peter had become and the enforcer that James was. It would be a while for James to come to terms with that, if he ever really could come to terms with something like that.

Scott guided him to the bedroom and eased him into bed. It was true that he had left James alone in that moment. Scott took the time to get James something to drink, a couple snacks, whatever he might be needing as he grieved. He undressed enough to be comfortable and climbed back into bed with James.

Pulling the older man close, he tucked James’ head under his chin and rubbed his back lightly. “It’ll be okay. We’ll go to see him when we can. He’s still in town. He’s just tucked away somewhere that’s safer for everyone. He’ll still be happy to see you, I’m sure.”

Something sparked in James’ brain at those words. Particularly the ‘somewhere that’s safer for everyone’ part. Scott must be more in the dark than he realized if he thought Eichen House was ‘safe’ for anyone besides the people that ran it.

Especially if Valack was still in residence.

A growl was Scott’s only warning before he was shoved on his back and pinned by the weight of the Enforcer. “Safety in Eichen House, Scott? They still do lobotomies and electroshock therapy. Trepanation is still in practice and you expect me to believe that Peter is safe there?”

He knew that werewolves were durable but a hole drilled into the skull was difficult to bounce back from. James was again trying to figure out a way in but he knew there was mountain ash all over the place. He growled again, this time in frustration while baring a hint of fang before he got off the bed.

He picked up the picture of Peter. Family was everything. He didn’t have anything of Emily besides him. And he didn’t have anything to remember the times before the fire. “He’s all I have. And you’re going to help me get him out of Eichen House. Aren’t you, Scott? Then we can all be together again.”

That was an odd question. She’d seen him both cook and eat tonight. But maybe there was more to it? Of course, he sometimes found it hard to read her. Suppose it came with the territory of being over four hundred years old and how many vampires did he know outside of this household anyway to compare to?

Peter leaned into the touch and sighed. “ It will be good for us. You should keep me grounded enough so that I don’t go on another killing spree. And besides I am a bit more adjusted at the moment.” He grinned as he looked at the other man. “ So should we look into expanding the pack? Or should we wait a bit for that?”

He thought to ask about that ‘another killing spree’ thing but it wasn’t his place to pry. Especially now. But he did understand that he would keep the Alpha grounded just as he did for him. But it was the talk of expanding the pack that got his attention. He knew Alphas got stronger with packs but there was still the trepidation around at least one meaning of that phrase. “I’m still not ready to carry, Alpha.” He’d just have to not get so jealous if Peter started creating betas.
