Ohhh, goodness~ To be paid in cakes, that is the dream! [giggles] Let me know as soon as you need help!
[Snickers.] For as much as my paycheck goes to Carl's cakes, I'm pretty sure that's the definition of my salary..! [Brightens.] But absolutely, will do! I'll just come running like-- [Cups her hands to her mouth, raising her voice.]
'Ey, Ellen! We got the goods if you got the service! [Giggles.]
*Puts down a bundle of logs, wiping off the sweat from his forehead* Woody said the cafe needed this.
[She's in the middle of painting the cafe's title on the front door with a medium sized paintbrush when the sound of a bundle of logs clattering to the ground nearby startles her - causing the "a" in "Cafe" to go decidedly crooked.]
Ah!
[She whips around, looking for a culprit - and points to Kurt.] You! Kurt! What the heck! What do you think you're doing, scaring a girl like that? I coulda had a heart attack! Sheesh, look at this door!
[She gestures to it wildly - before stopping. Turns back to him.]
Oh. Wait, hold on, before I yell at you, I should say hi. [Smiles, waving to him.] It's been a while! How are you? Okay, now. [Immediately back to shouting.] What's the big idea?!
Secret Sweet Service (Jamie & Katie)
"I’m a customer," she said. "And I came here for cake, not puns. I’m not paying you for word play."
Kaf-ay? she thought. It’s spelled C-A-F-E. It’s kayf, you idiot. She did not want ice cream with her cheesecake, regardless of how fashionable it was. She crossed her arms as she waited for her slice. “And why can’t you just say swagger, it’s a shorter word.” There was another word she did not know particularly well.
Katie rolls her eyes, then nods. "Alright, alright, just cake. You got it. The customer is always right." Sheesh, what was with this girl?
She finished carefully slicing off the piece of cheesecake, making sure it looked every bit as presentable as it ought to. As she did this, she poked her tongue out between her lips-- except when responding. "Gosh, I dunno. Why does anyone say anything? It's just slang. You know, one person starts saying something, and someone else likes it so they say it too, and pretty soon the slang becomes a word just like any other word. It's just a cool or cute way to say something."
She interjected suddenly, looking up: "For here or to go, by the way?"
Oh, goodness! I could've lent a hand, though! [giggles] I'm no carpenter, but I could've helped assembling chairs.[obviously joking] I'm sure it isn't much different from fixing a stool.
[Blows her bangs out of her hair at the mention of the word carpenter - giving Ellen a lopsided smile.] I'll remember that next time we order something hard to put together, heehee. I bet it won't be long at all, actually! Carl's got packages coming in practically every day full of all sorts of decorations and stuff. I bet he'd really appreciate the extra help!
[Giggles happily.] And we could pay you in cake!
Hmhmm! It was /great/, Katie! Very good. [smiles] You've been in town a few weeks now, yeah? Sorry I didn't drop in sooner!
Thanks! I've been practicing in the mirror. I think I've got it down pat! [Giggles.]
Aw-- it's okay, Ellen! [She waves her hands, trying to show she's not upset.] It's totally okay! I'm super glad you're here now! ♥ We've been kinda busy around here, so it's probably for the best. You mighta come in while everything was all in the middle of being unpacked.
[She holds a hand up over her head.] We had cardboard boxes stacked pretty much up to here at one point! It was a nightmare to break them all down, and don't even get me started on assembling all the chairs!
Secret Sweet Service (Jamie & Katie)
"I’m not into sweets," she replied, her tone unchanged. "I just want some cake; I could make some on my own, but I would be up all night, so I came here. Does Carl know you patronize your customers like this?"
Jamie looked at the menu choices, a little disappointed. She had no complaints about chocolate, or cupcakes, but those were always subpar to… cheesecake! When she saw it in the glass counter, she immediately pointed to it. There was even strawberries in it? Even better. She only read the cost and retrieved the bill that matched it. “Ala-what?” she asked, handing it over. “Can you just speak normally? First this swag nonsense, and now this.”
Katie gasps, a hand flying to cover her heart as she puts on an affronted act. "Patronizing! But--" She paused to giggle, leaning in to smile coyly as she delivers the death blow. "Are you not a patron? Heehee. Sorry, all meals come with side of puns, by order of the owner."
Katie hummed to herself as Jamie reviewed her options - adopting a knowing look the moment the farmer zoomed in on the cheesecake. Bingo. The missing two slices were both purchased with Katie's first paycheck, for herself-- so she definitely understood. She set to work fetching a clean knife to cut the customer a slice, only looking up at the jab on the saying-- and snickering happily at the mention of swag.
"But I am speaking normally! A la mode is a pretty common saying as far as cafes go, you know! It's french-- it means, uh." She squints for a second, trying to remember. "Hold on, I know this. Like, um, do what's fashionable, I think. Or do what's common. Anyway! The point I'm trying to make is, a la mode means you serve it with a scoop of ice cream! You know, like its common to do in french cafes and stuff. I've got strawberry or vanilla in the back, if you want!"
She sticks out her tongue. "And swag's a normal word too, you know! It's short for swagger. Everyone's got swagger, even you!"
Secret Sweet Service (Jamie & Katie)
"I heard there was cake here," she said. "I require that." Jamie spoke quite plainly and paid no intention to the woman’s comments about her not getting any free food. She did not expect to get a free cake. She walked over to the woman, "Where’s the menu?"
She was already reaching under her poncho for her bag, where she kept her money. As she had her eyes averted from Katie’s, she took the opportunity to look around the restaurant some more. It certainly was rather bare. Not much in the way of wall decorations or anything. It did not matter, but the simple folk that are humans loved such things.
"You require cake, huh?" Katie all but smirked, looking like a cat who's just been gifted a saucer of cream. This guy-- er, girl-- was just too rich! "I guess sometimes I require cake, too. Man, I don't think I pegged you as someone who was big into sweets, though!"
"Well, that's where the menu is gonna be." She nodded to the large chalkboard behind her, very beautifully affixed to the wall - but with nothing yet written. "We just have this, for now-- nothing's been set in stone yet or anything." She handed Jamie a piece of paper with a few basic items listen on it - various types of cupcakes, brownies, sweets and griddle treats. Pancakes were the most prominently displayed, with various flavors to boast of.
"But if you want cake, we have it by the slice-- right here." She tapped a finger against the top of the glass section of the counter, where several freshly baked and iced cakes and cheesecakes stood on dislay. Only one or two pieces seemed to be missing from either one. "Strawberry cheescake and chocolate fudge. Either of those sound good to you? We also have ice cream, if you want it a la mode.♥"
[walks into the Cafe, looking around before coming to the counter with a smile] Hello~?
Helloooo~! [She giggles as she realizes who it is - carefully finishing placing a sheet of fresh brownies in the glass behind the cafe’s counter before bounding over to the spot Ellen’s approached.]
Welcome, welcome, to Cafe Callaway! What can I get for you? [She beams proudly.] How was that? How did I do on my introduction?
Secret Sweet Service (Jamie & Katie)
Jamie had heard that Carl had opened up a restaurant in town a couple weeks ago, but she had no time to go and check it out. She had the opportunity, when Katie offered “free” food after the volleyball game, but there was far too many people potentially going for Jamie’s liking. Amanda was also going too, it seemed, which would only send the wrong message to people. She was not friends with Amanda.
She read the words on the window underneath the streetlight. Kayf Callaway… she read. The accent mark over the E threw her off. She read the hours it was open. There was half an hour before it closed. Good. She stepped inside and looked around at all the tables. It even smelled brand new. The bell over her head rang, signalling her arrival.
Katie had spent the better part of the afternoon splayed out on the surface of the counter next to the cash register, bored out of her mind. No customers had learned to come through yet, mostly because they hadn't taken out advertisement or made an official opening announcement. Besides the people she'd given out free food to, she was putting much just babysitting a bunch of cupcakes.
Until the bell jingled.
Katie shot up in excitement, on her feet again in seconds as she looked to the door.
"It's-- you!"
She slapped her palms down on the counter once before placing them on her hips. "So, you show your face in the cafe after all! Don't expect to get free food now, though! That promotions over." She giggled. "Oh-- wait. Hold on, I'm supposed to say the line."
She cleared her throat, then immediately smiled brightly. "Welcome to the Cafe Callaway! What can I get for you? ♪"
"It’s warm because someone’s heart and soul went into it," she said, pulling it over her head. She felt so much more at ease with it. She brought her fingers to her lips and whistled. Shun started to gallop over to her. One the black horse was at her side, she climbed up and put her hat back on.
"I suppose she would want me to say something too," Jamie said to Amanda, looking up. "Wherever she is…" She looked back down. "You weren’t bad today, but don’t let this get to your head. It changes nothing."
She stared at the poncho as Jamie put it on. She was bit envious of Jamie. She put a smile back on her face. As Shun galloped over, Scruffy stuck his head between Amanda’s feet. His tongue was slightly out and he tilted his head at Jamie.
“You did really good today Jamie,” she smiled. “All you need to do is work on your sportsmanship…You don’t need to tell me every time you say something nice, Jamie. I know.”
[Stands back a bit, instinctively knowing she ought to back up slightly from the conversation. The way it feels to be an onlooker when these two talk - even someone like Katie knows not to intrude. But she offered free cake at the cafe! Were they coming, or--?]
[Coughs.] Hey, you two-- [Giggles.] I'll go on ahead and get things ready, okay? You guys, uh-- you come along too if you want free stuff!
[She turns and runs, giggling to herself as she goes.]
Jack crossed his arms as the apparent woman on the other team threw off her poncho with a bit of a flare. He had observed her lack of teamwork and inability to even speak with her teammates without yelling. He pointed over to her:
"And you’re too noisy. I will win this and prove you wrong."
Sheesh. Get a room, you two.
"Tch, I’ve worked in hotter weather with it," she replied. "It just got in the way in this stupid game." She felt guilty saying that about the poncho, after she said it. She looked ahead. "So, stop staring at me."
Uh, it's a free country? I can put my eyes wherever I want!
[Holds her eyes open wide as she continues to stare at Jamie.] See? Look, I'm looking at you! Look at me looking at you! I'm totally-- oh, shoot, did we serve? Sheesh, pay attention and stop distracting me!
"What?" Jamie asked, noticing her stare.
Huh? Wha-- nothing! Nothing! I was just. [Blinks.]
... [Grins.] I'm just glad you finally took that thing off! You looked like you were about to pass out from heat exhaustion or something! Maybe you'll be less cranky now, heehee.
Being short was not fun. At least she didn’t botch up the serve. She knows she has to work extremely hard to keep a certain someone on her team pleased.
She went over to the nearest teammate and gave them a pat on the back. “Good work. You having fun?”
[Beams at Amanda, giggling happily.] Lots of fun! Good work to you, too! [Pats her on the back as well.] That is the most important thing, after all!
[Wrinkles her nose - then leans in to whisper:] Don't let purple-head over there get you down, okay?
I’ll take that as a full-on compliment~! But flattery won’t get you anywhere!
Yeah, that's pretty much some serious swag. It's swagerious.
"If you were doing something right, we’d be in the lead." Her jaw was clenched as a bead of sweat rolled down the side of her face. She was not going to remove her poncho, but the heat was certainly making it difficult to focus. If things did not change, she would exchange comfort for function. She did not like the thought of rushing into this poncho-less, but it may have to be done…
Um, we are in the lead, duh. It's just that the other team is also in the lead.
... Hey, bud, you might wanna take off the winter wear, though! You look like you might be dying.
HIT THE BEACH ITS A SWAGNAMI
"I don’t know what this swag is, but it sounds incredibly stupid, if she’s got copious amounts of it," she replied.
Aw c'mon, you know what swag is! It's all like, when you pop your hips and strut like you pretty much own the place 'cos you're such a boss.
You know, like you were doing five minutes ago!
