Christian Paternalism?

A letter to a friend, prompted by a link to this article concerning how Christians should respond to homosexuality.

Like the author I agree that the Christian response to any sin, including homosexuality, should be, "That's wrong, and you are loved." All sinners are loved, even the lowest. A better response would be, 'That's wrong, but we can be wrong together. We are all loved."

Like any other sin, no amount of therapy can truly change a sinner like God can, in his own time. That said, I'm not clear why a fraction of Christians adamantly lobby against gay marriage or abortion, or any other paternalistic endeavors really. It's strange to imagine a Muslim lobbying for a ban on non-Halal food, or a Jew lobbying against a ban on non-Kosher foods. It's just as silly as the mandatory "tithe" tax collected in Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.

Before every Holy Communion my church reminds our guests to not partake in the breaking of bread if they have not committed themselves to Christ. We do not make everyone sitting in pews take the bread and wine, because faith and belief is from the heart, and only Christ can soften our hearts to make the choice. Why then do some Christians believe it is in their place to make the choice for non-Christians, and to what end does this serve?

This question has urked me for a long time, and I'm glad there was an opportunity to share this. I have no problem with the church teaching what it teaches in church, and advocating change of hearts in a Christian setting, but I'm still undecided on wether or not a Christians should encourage non-Christians to turn away from homosexuality in a public forum. Of course everything is protected by freedom of speech, but as a Christian, is it okay to encourage a person with same sex attraction to change.
