Does the show take Fan Response seriously?
I feel like it's been more than enough time to see how badly Jollum was presented to the audience. So why doesn't the writing try to compensate? I'm reminded of things like Ruby Rose's character cameo in the season after her character left of OITNB where the writers more or less acknowledged that the audience hated them and had her told off by Piper. Or Che being called out as some unfunny and unlikable "Woke Queer parody" in AJLT. Like writers hear the response to their writing, and decide to address it. I don't feel like we've gotten that with Jollum. I'm not expecting them to throw out Jollum (although I'd love it), but like present them as somewhat sympathetic in some manner. At least Callum should be.
Even small things like showing Callum look at the wedding picture with sadness or having someone bring Ben up briefly so that Callum looks somewhat guilty, all of this is easy to implement. A moment where he outright admits that he did something very wrong and Ben is right to be angry.
Instead they just have Callum acting as if Ben never existed, as if the last 6 years of his life didn't revolve around that man. Maybe it's their attempt to distance Callum from being just "Ben's Love Interest" but it just makes Callum come off like some stepford smiler who's able to push people that matter to him to the back of his mind like it's no big deal? Also it just makes him "Johnny's Love Interest". He didn't gain any autonomy.
I feel we all think he's compartmentalizing and lying to himself cause that's the only answer that makes any kind of sense. But that doesn't mean the show can't imply that's true. They could have someone bring up Ben and Callum moves quickly out of the room because he knows if he thinks about Ben too much he'll start to remember how badly he treated him. If they're worried that will make it too obvious that Jollum is temporary until Ben returns.......well shit EE you're out of luck, we all think that already. Even people who hate Ballum.
Then you're contrasted with the fact Jollum barely has any "romantic" scenes between them. Even a scene of Callum reassuring Johnny of his "feelings" for him after he revealed the affair to Lexi is shockingly devoid of any love. Ends with a chaste kiss and Lexi glaring at them from the hallway as Johnny feels bad for himself like a tempestuous child. I can't tell if the lack of chemistry is intentional or not.
At this rate I do think Johnny might cheat on Callum, but I'm wondering if Ben will be brought up at all. Will Callum just be mad like he regularly would be if he never met Ben and Johnny was his first boyfriend? Or would they take the very obvious and easily sympathetic option of having him reflect on this karma for cheating on the man he promised to be Together Forever?
Idk. The writings so disjointed it's confusing.
Tony's interview reminded me that whatever they asked him to say was very calculated. He justified why Callum would have chosen to pursue the affair and why he would feel the Mitchells were hypocrites but he also reassured that Callum would always love Ben and that Callum "thinks" this is what a relationship should be like. He didn't really bring up Johnny as a romantic prospect seriously, like Johnny was Callum's real soulmate, just the literal only person on the square left who cared to ask about his feelings. Which btw is the writers fault for not giving him a fucking friend.
Idk. The writing is either shit or building up to something that won't be worth the constant torture we've all been through with this milktoast affair. I think I've seen more romantic passion from the Folger christmas incest ad than whatever Jollum has going on.
Hey writers here's an idea
If you're gonna make Callum this sociopathic in ignoring Ben and Lexi's feelings then do us a favor and have Johnny and him fight and Callum to have a full psychotic rage moment where the penny drops.
Like have Johnny cheat and Callum freaks out and screams that he gave up his marriage for him and now it's all worthless. And then have Callum look at his wedding photo and cry.
Should I be more annoyed at this storyline
Can't tell if it's going in a good direction or bad direction.
No mention of Ben tonight because god forbid someone bring up how forcing Johnny onto Lexi is incredibly disrespectful of him. I'm gonna have to accept this is soap opera rapid storyline shit where we just have to accept that instead of a realistic period of time before Johnny can just come over for movie nights they gotta rush the Lexi acceptance thing just so they can either come to the good conclusion (she never accepts him and he's dead to her) or bad conclusion (she accepts him and I kill Ben Wadey).
I'm also just gonna ignore how easily Lexi was able to be bought. She's a 13 year old girl, it's not unrealistic for her to be distracted by shiny and expensive stuff. Plus there's always the chance she's just trying to fleece him for everything he's worth. It did feel weird to one up his offer for the Mean Girls Musical by going "I'd rather see this artist instead" and then be surprised when Johnny offers to pay for it. Like that's an easy grift I think most people who aren't desperate for their boyfriend's kid not to hate them wouldn't fall for. Her mentioning that Callum thought it was too expensive might also be a way to cement in Callum's mind that Johnny is paying his way into her heart.
Unfortunately I don't trust the writers so I'm gonna have to be prepared she's just a teen girl being bought and might have to go spoiled brat before Callum gets some balls and puts a stop to it.
It would have been nice to bring up Ben not wanting her to be spoiled too, but I can let it go cause Ben kind of always spoiled her. He was that kind of Girl Dad TM. Still it'd be nice to bring him up so I can see Callum's face show an ounce of guilt. He's too happy right now for my taste. This dipshit needs to show fucking regret cause if Ben comes back next year and Callum doesn't feel an ounce of regret until then I'm gonna be pissed cause then I won't be given a chance to see Callum grovel for Ben's forgiveness.
He did seem to grimace a bit at hearing Tim was buying Johnny booze, like his insecurities were being rationalized. Hope that's a good sign. Maybe that's why he did the stupid choice to leave his daughter alone with him. Horrible parenting again Callum. She barely likes him if given a heads up he's coming, I don't think she wants to see him pop up randomly. Also Johnny button up your fucking shirt. The greasy white tank top along with his chest hair and general creepiness makes him look so skeevy as fuck. Like he looks like the kind of guy who sells you a crappy car and pokes holes in condoms.
Callum's been a little more touchy with Johnny but not to the same extent as with Ben. I noticed they don't like....cuddle? Like even when at the Vic that day they were talking about Joel they just sat together without any arm around the other. And when Callum put his arm on the couch at the end I was expecting Johnny to fall to his side like Ben would do, where he'd rest his head on Callum's chest but Johnny just moved to the side. Maybe he's smart enough to know Lexi wouldn't wanna see them cuddle. Maybe the writers want Jollum to be less touchy cause they got a lot of backlash of this couple. Maybe it's Maybeline.
Loved that he ruined a family Christmas gift. Loved that even Honey looked put off about it. Love that Callum was surprised that Johnny wasn't that ecstatic about Billy & Honey coming over, like it's settling in that Johnny isn't exactly prepared for the long haul. Maybe that's why he's overcompensating by spending so much money. Love that Callum's uncomfortable with Johnny's attempts to buy Lexi's love but is too cowardly to do anything about it. Hope this means it blows up in his face. Like he brings it up eventually and Johnny gets pissed cause he was trying so hard and spent so much to get Lexi to like him and Callum maybe "ruined" it by putting his foot down and Lexi does a teen girl tantrum (which I'm not entirely convinced wouldn't be intentionally calculated by Lexi as a way to divide Johnny and Callum). And then Johnny seeks comfort through Tim and cheats.
I do feel part of the reason I can't see them together is that they seem to be two different kinds of gay men. Johnny's the gay guy who's a little more effeminate, has a great relationship with his parents, loves to go out drinking and dancing with sweaty shirtless men (something he mentioned long ago during that first time they were gonna hang out before Callum, who shouldn't be doing that as a married man, cut it off so Lexi wouldn't get confused. Oh how sad how time has gone.) And Callum's a "straight gay", horrible parents that traumatized him, who's always been fine with settling down and being a boring married couple who watch movies every night on the couch and raise a child together. And weirdly Ben should be the same kind of gay as Johnny, but he's perfectly fine being the "boring" gay man too. He even mentioned once to Jack how he likes playing the domestic housewife. Ben still wants to dance every now and then but he loves Lexi and Callum so much that spending the day with them is just as good if not better.
I wonder if maybe that might end up being a divide in their relationship? Again Johnny was prepared to go out and party the night away and then seemed kind of ill prepared to do a boring family dinner.
Anyway I hate this show still for prolonging this shit, someone please come to my house, punch me into a coma and wake me up when Max returns.
After rewatching and thinking about it, it might not even matter if Callum is jealous or not.
I feel like the focus could be on Johnny's insecurities causing him to do stupid things. Like he didn't react well when he thought Callum wasn't supporting him, even though Callum was only pointing out that Tim is into him and that could be a motivator here.
Now Johnny's made this business deal to prove something. I sense Johnny's insecurities are going to be the main driver of their probable relationship breakdown.
Like I don't think it even matters whether Tim is actually investing just to get to Johnny or because he genuinely thinks it is a good business idea.
In fact, it might be better if Tim does think the business idea is good because it would feed the conflict between Callum and Johnny, and draw Johnny towards Tim.
I can envision Johnny feeling he's not getting enough support from Callum, regardless of whether Callum is jealous or not, and so going to Tim for comfort, praise, and attention, eventually resulting in an affair.
It would be very karmic for Callum to face the same situation with Johnny that he inflicted upon Ben.
I'd love that especially if someone was able to make it clear to Callum that he was given the same fate he gave Ben. I really need him to make a friend or something.
I'm a little more convinced that Tim is genuine about his business ideas (his instagram seems to prove he's legit rich so it's probably not a grift) and his little put off moment could prove he's flirty with Johnny but not stupid and he outright does want this to be successful. Maybe to some degree his seriousness will be attractive to Johnny, like he's confident and proud of who he is and what he works, unlike Callum who is coward incarnate and is flaky about how crappily Johnny is integrating himself into Lexi's life with false platitudes.
I hope it's more than just one cheating moment too, cause I can see Callum forgiving one indiscretion like he was with Ben. Again it'll still be good cause it will cause resentment, but more than one act will really cement Callum leaving him for a good while, at least until Callum ends up giving up again just in time for Ben to return and see Callum trapped in a loveless relationship while his literal soulmate reclaims his place in the square, takes back his daughter and hooks up incessantly with England's hottest extras to drive Callum mad.
I wonder if Elaine will try to meddle again
If Johnny does cheat on Callum and Callum gets pissed like he did with the Jonno lie, Elaine comes to Callum and tries to vouch for Johnny's love again.
"He only cheated on you cause that's how he shows love"
And Callum just tells her to fuck off.
It's a funny thought. Right now I'm ok with her meddling in the Timothy thing, she clearly gave Johnny the ok to flirt heavily with someone who is not his partner for financial gain. God she's kind of an all around scumbag.
So is he jealous or not?
Idk he seemed pretty normal today. He stalked the guys insta (which implied that Timothy is legit successful by his many contacts and vacations so maybe it won't be a fleecing stunt) and he didn't come off possessive or anything. It's weird cause Callum's never really been the jealous sort, the few times he's felt jealous for either Whitney (her rebound after the breakup), Ben (his many "ex's", Lewis, his supposed drug orgies), or Johnny (Johnny's last two dates) he mostly keeps to himself and sulks. Ben's really the only one who's been able to make him outwardly mad and hate the other guy (Lewis when he thought they slept together and punched him).
Callum seemed slightly miffed yesterday but also he's weirdly detached? I can't tell if it's bad writing or the show is implying Callum doesn't really care about Johnny's feelings as much as he thinks he does. The "burn" Lexi gave Johnny also gave that.
[I might be wrong on this but it looks like they're wearing the clothes for the dinner tmmrw but Johnny changes into a suit and then I guess puts back the old clothes? idk.]
I adored seeing Johnny annoyed that Callum thinks Timothy wants him. That's always a good sign cause usually that means "yeah no the guy wants him". I'm thinking of Mark in Friends towards Rachel for example. It'd be one thing if Callum was outwardly hateful towards Timothy that might mean he's being paranoid but he's not. And Timothy is absolutely horny for Johnny and Johnny looks like he's about to make some very bad decisions and I am very happy about that. Elaine saying it's ok to flirt a little to get his way and Tim's comments "you're going to love me, I commit," all of this really does seem like it's building up to Johnny cheating with Timothy.
My only worry is that Timothy's little annoyance today over Johnny's hesitance is gonna give us a controlling guy who's along the lines of Lewis and I don't want that at all. It'd be retreading and I don't need Callum trying to save Johnny again.
Just let Johnny end up going too far with Timothy and having Callum realize Johnny's a piece of shit and not worth destroying his marriage for.
Walford Web's Legion of Doofus's seem to think it might be a Throuple situation. Which like.........c'mon that's just stupid right? And unlikely? Hell if Callum was ok with a throuple he'd have asked Ben. I can't imagine that being the direction, but it Shamelessness's idea and that idiot is just hateful towards anything pro ballum. They still think Ben's "makes me feel better about the men I've had inside" statement was real and not clearly Ben lying to lash out.
Part of me wonders if Timothy's camp mannerisms means Callum feels insecure that Timothy is "gayer" than him and might appeal more to Johnny. Johnny did date Felix who was pretty effiminate, and Callum's very much a "straight gay" trope. Which worked well with Ben who was also pretty much a "straight gay" (i know it's a problematic term, you get my point tho) but Johnny seems a little more confident of his sexuality than even Ben, he's got the poor man's george michael look all over him.
I shouldn't have hope because I know Ben Wadey likes to zig when we think he's gonna zag but idk. I hope Timothy really does whisk Johnny away like Callum said.
Do it Johnny. You've got nothing to lose and another hot guy to add a notch to your bedpost. We all know Callum will end up leaving you for Ben anyway the second Ben returns (realistically they'll do a will they won't they for like a month at least but still). Go fuck this new hot guy and get Jollum off our screens. If the internet's shown any indication under every post of their scenes, it's that it's a wildly unpopular ship even among people who like Johnny.
I saw it as Callum thinking Tim is better suited for Johnny. He wasn't overtly jealous like he was yesterday but clearly he was feeling a bit insecure.
I think he was trying to pass it off today as a bit of a joke but I also agree he was detached. Maybe Callum's new way of dealing with uncomfortable situations is just to joke about them.
Today felt like the beginning of a rift. Johnny clearly thinks Callum doesn't believe in him or his ideas, whilst Callum seems to think Tim is only interested in Johnny because he fancies him. The contrast between the scenes with Callum and Tim were pretty stark. Once fractious, the other flirty.
Tim might turn out to be controlling, I don't know. But my feeling is that Johnny will be following him down the road to infidelity without much resistance. Johnny hesitated today but if Elaine's advice is any indication of what Johnny chooses to do, and it always is, he's going to keep flirting with Tim until it goes too far.
I really don't think this is a Lewis situation.
That said, I don't see Johnny at this stage running to jump into bed with Tim. I think it's going to be a drawn out affair where Callum and Johnny begin to realise they aren't well suited whilst Tim hangs around as someone who boosts Johnny's confidence, has money, and is more in tune with Johnny's personality.
And eventually, most likely after some kind of falling out with Callum, I can see Johnny running to Tim for comfort and them sleeping together.
The culmination of a failing relationship that breaks once Johnny cheats. Very much like what Elaine did with George.
I hope like George then, it closes the door for good.
I want Callum to be broken but less because he's broken at Johnny's betrayal but instead he's broken by his own decisions that led him to giving up the man he once promised to be together forever for someone who threw him away like he was nothing. I still worry that Callum might think Ben still cheated on him in jail (Callum's look at Ben's "confession" seemed to be like he believed Ben's clear lie) so I hope it doesn't deter Callum from trying to go to Ben. It'd be great if Phil or Kathy bring it up that he should know by now that Ben would lie. Even if it's an offscreen visit where Callum relays to Kathy later that he went to reconcile and Ben refused to see him. I need the regret to seep in immediately. I say Kathy cause Callum doesn't have any fucking friends apparently. Seriously bring Fitzy back or something. Give Callum his own Callum. A backboard to talk against.
I also worry it might be like Ben's "betrayal" with Lewis where Callum talked a big game of never seeing Ben again but then clearly found his way back to Ben regardless, and even implied to Stuart at one point that he was gonna one day forgive Ben for the alleged affair. Callum also never pursued divorce papers at the time, though that might just be the show forgetting Callum exists. I can see it presented in a more negative way where Callum gives up and takes Johnny back because he's lonely. Then again that will leave a huge resentment that might make Callum disdainful of Johnny. God I wish Johnny would bring up Ben's "Lewis affair". I know he has no way of knowing it but it would be so good if he does cheat on Callum, tells Callum Ben wasn't so faithful too and Callum gets protective when he brings it up but can't explain why. Sorry that's very unlikely, they seem to forget old plot points all the time. I just liked seeing Johnny so annoyed at Callum today and I wish we got to see some of an annoyed Callum at Johnny. He didn't even chew Johnny out at the confession to Lexi.
I wonder if Johnny will cheat on Callum right when Callum gets the papers. Idk if it was you or someone else who pointed out the one chance we get to see Callum really struggling with what he did to pen (pre Ben's return) will be when the papers are signed.
I've decided to look at next week as a good sign if Timothy is at the quiz night. Maybe he'll plant more seeds of doubt in Callum's head that Johnny is not faithful. Cause like he isn't...You lose them them how you get them Callum.
Also Carter & Carter felt kind of like a sign
I may be looking too much into it. There's obviously only one Carter lawyer. Maybe it's like a sign Timothy wants to imply to their customers that he's the other Carter, as in a partner taking his last name?
Probably looking too much into it. But I'd love it if it was true.
So is he jealous or not?

So much for a nerdy accountant
I don't wanna have hope. This show always fucks me over.
But it is weird how much chemistry Johnny has with Timothy over Callum. Timothy is kind of camp, rich and has a history with Johnny, the old college friend who had a huge glow up, Elaine seems already interested in him (she really does live through Johnny doesn't she she's such a creep), Johnny looks moved by how grateful Timothy is to him and Callum's "so much for a nerdy accountant" looked like it made Johnny surprised like Callum was calling out how hot the guy is out of jealousy.
I don't like seeing jealous Callum over Johnny, nor am I happy to see him call himself Johnny's boyfriend (although that did seem to make the guy stumble), but GOD PLEASE LET JOHNNY CHEAT ON CALLUM!!!! It helps that Callum being jealous Johnny might cheat is pure projection cause he knows he might lose Johnny the same way he got him.
The only deterrent I see is Timothy's little moment with Zoe, that also seemed to have some chemistry though I could see him being bi or it being just a red herring.
It's just Timothy seems perfect for Johnny. He's hot, he's successful, he's rich, Elaine loves him, he worships the things Johnny has done for him. He seemed a little taken aback at hearing Johnny had a boyfriend....
Cmon! Let them cheat and make Callum suffer actual consequences!
I hope Billy's talk with Callum tmmrw (or Thursday) about Johnny buying Lexi's love will make Callum choose to slow down on Johnny attempting a relationship with Lexi cause if he does do that then Johnny will feel like he's being pushed away again. That Callum doesn't want him to be a future parent or even just get along with his daughter who will always come first between them. And that could free him up to easily falling into Timothy's arms....
And then I can laugh because that asshole gets to see the man he threw away his entire life for betray him and he has no way of getting Ben back so he'll either just be alone or pissed off and resentful of Johnny for cheating on him. I hope it's not just money Timothy's after for, him getting his money through Crypto is kind of worrying me...
(and then the show is probably gonna make Johnny reject Timothy and buy Callum flowers cause this show hates me. Dammit I jinxed it.)
I get the hesitation because we've been burned before but I am now definitely thinking love triangle/cheating with the introduction of Timothy.
Callum's jealousy is just endlessly amusing to me now because I want him to suffer what he put Ben through. I don't even care he called himself Johnny's boyfriend because that's basically what they are at this point. This storyline only works if Callum takes on that role, to subsequently get brokenhearted in the end.
I saw Zoe flirting with Tim but definitely didn't feel it was reciprocated. I thought he was actually uncomfortable and I'm assuming it'll be revealed he's gay.
But I'm very intrigued that she invited him to the quiz night next week since we know Callum and Johnny will be there. I hope Tim does make an appearance to stir up more trouble.
And it's true, Tim and Johnny have chemistry, a shared history, Elaine's approval - the perfect combination needed to cause Johnny to cheat.
Hilarious if that's where it goes.
I didn't see it as a barrier more of a good thing cause it means that he was disappointed Johnny was taken.
God I was hoping for one week without these dipshits. On the one hand we might get a moment where it's clear Johnny and Timothy have a thing going that might echo Lewis and Ben (only without the hidden agenda) and make Callum insecure.
But I could also see them using that opportunity to give Jollum some romantic moment like the "I've got everything I need right here" when Ben and Callum were propositioned for a threeway.
Although they've done a shit job of making Jollum look romantic so far so maybe we'll be lucky. Maybe it's all intentional. I just need them to breakup so I can stop watching the show and come back next year when Ben returns.
Side note, writers you can give Callum a storyline that isn't a fucking love triangle.

Fuck Callum Highway
It really sucks to see Callum look so happy and jovial with Johnny when his daughter is forced to deal with his shitty partner forcing himself into her life, and Ben is in prison fighting suicidal ideation.
Like I genuinely don't get what they wanna do with him. At this rate do they feel if they make him into a complete asshole who's only interested in his feelings that we would even wanna watch him be Lexi's dad or Ben's husband again?
I really hope Johnny cheats on him cause if Ben Wadey thinks people will tolerate this version of Callum for so long, he's wrong. All of which could be solved if he had moments of remorse or moments where he admits he fucked up and misses Ben or even just a crying scene or two. Instead he's just this delusional cardboard cutout who gave up his husband, seems to have no feelings about it besides welcoming Johnny like he's just a casual relationship that didn't start from him cheating on his husband and betraying his family.
Like it's really way too casual and if someone doesn't bring up how fucked up it is that Callum seems to see Lexi's hatred for Johnny as just some obstacle that she'll get over and not his daughter clearly suffering from his actions I'm gonna fucking riot.
I get that the writers hate giving Callum.......anything without him being an accessory to someone else but by god. You've had Tony Clay for 7 years, give him scenes to himself where he can act without him being a supporting backboard to someone else. Show us his fucking pain. Show us why he's so desperate to keep Johnny while ignoring Lexi's pain. Do fucking something.
Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if Callum doesn't even take Lexi to see Ben during visitors hours and just makes Kathy or Phil do it for him. For someone who had a shred of remorse and guilt that made him confess, he seems to clearly be ok with just throwing Ben away like nothing. Hell he still thinks Johnny will be here in 4 years when Ben comes out.
I need Johnny to cheat so Callum breaks up with him, runs back to Ben and has Ben slam the door in his face. We've gone nearly the entire affair and now this relationship with Callum barely having to face any consequences. Lexi isn't even pissed at him anymore. She ought to be angry at Callum too not just Johnny. It's like even she wants to rob Callum of all agency so it's easier when Ben comes back next year to take Callum back.
I do not look forward to the rest of Jollum. I wish there was a way to wean myself off. I don't wanna see them have couples costumes on Halloween or Valentines Day plans or a New Years Kiss. I wanna see them goneeeeeee. They have like 6 fans, most people who don't even like Ballum hate them cause they're boring, and they have no fucking chemistry at all. Get them off the fucking screen and put them in the background.
Also if we have to suffer through this at least give Ben a shit hot boyfriend when he comes back to torture Callum with. Like I want Callum to be forced to watch them be happy without him over and over. Ben deserves some happiness.

Someone on youtube made a fake ai image of Johnny dying and labeled it spoilers (trying to imply the guy he goes into business with will kill him) and I believed it for a hot second and got my hopes up.
Honestly though I don't want him to die, the way the guy is dressed (I'm gay I can say this) and Callum's general anxiety over being alone (slash projecting) makes me think the guy is actually gonna have sex with Johnny.
Delicious irony if Callum gave up his soulmate for a man whose only appeal was his close proximity, only for Ben to be within driving distance and Johnny to cheat on him weeks after getting together.
