Tortworth Chestnut | Canis Major The famous Tortworth Chestnut, in Gloucestershire, was a landmark in the boundary records compiled in the reign of John, and was already known as the Great Chestnut of Tortworth in the days of Stephen. This is probably the most famous sweet chestnut in Britain. Because many of the branches of its huge twisted main trunk have rooted to become trees in their own right, it now looks like a small woodland. This enormous tree at 5 feet from the ground measured over 50 feet in circumference in 1720, and was still flourishing some years ago.
