Rainer Maria Rilke, "Letters to a Young Poet" (translated by M. D. Herter Norton)
“The seas are wide, the oceans are deep, and demons lurk in the waters that separate us. But nothing compares to the monster I will become, if the world does not give you back to me”

I met Chu So-so when I was 17. I still remember when I first saw her. It was during a sun shower on campus. I asked her why she didn't carry an umbrella, and she said that she hadn't listened to the weather report. I was struck by her vivaciousness and openness. It felt intimate, and made me want to look at her again. But she had already disappeared, like the sun shower.

Fran Winant, Dog with Secret Language (1975)
In drawings and paintings, like Dog with Secret Language, Cindy [Winant’s dog] is surrounded and literally protected by the secret language that Winant devised as a child for writing “journals and poems full of inexpressible loving thoughts about persons of the ‘wrong’ gender.”
