While Dr. Ratio was earning his computer science degree, he came across rubber duck debugging and has sworn by it ever since.

In fact, he loved it so much that even after finishing his doctorate—long since he's had to touch another piece of code—he still carries with him the exact same rubber ducky that's gotten him through all his hours of frustration and despair over all those stupid little coding bugs.

Rubber duck debugging, he decides, is far too wondrous of a technique to limit its usage only to coding. And so, he begins talking to his duck whenever he comes across difficulties while trying to prove mathematical theorems, or finds himself struggling with something or another while conducting his research. 

Soon enough, he finds himself talking to the rubber toy just to air out his daily frustrations. His duck—whom by now, he's affectionately dubbed "Ducky"—listens to it all without a single word of complaint. Rubber ducks, he concludes, are far better company than other people.

And so, Ratio’s conversations with his duck eventually turn to all sorts of topics, from philosophical to mundane. Anyone walking by his office will occasionally catch bits of muffled conversation floating out from behind his door.

(Is it considered a conversation if only one of them is able to talk? Perhaps soliloquy would be a more fitting term.)

All geniuses are prone to their own idiosyncrasies, they suppose.
