Heads up! 3 Cities You Should Explore by Bike in 2016
Brought to you by the Hammerhead Travel Team
Berlin, Germany | Biking Wanderland
If you’ve ever heard someone recount their experience in Berlin, once they stop raving about the abundance of Turkish street food, chances are they’ll mention how remarkably wide the city streets are. I see those wheels in your brain turning, eyes lighting up, you’re on to something...we were too.
In German, particularly the Berlin dialect, wide streets spells biking lalaland.
Auf Wiedersehen Manhattan, Achtung Berlin!
Known as Europe’s mecca of street art, house music and urban fashion the beloved capital can feel overwhelmingly A.D.D in its creative saturation. Teaming with palpitating activity, Berlin can quickly turn your brain to sauerkraut and it’s easy to miss some real local gems if you’re staring out a taxi window soundtracking your experience with terrible German radio pop. Nien!
Ditch the cab, rent some wheels and prepare to have your mind properly blown. There is no better guide to tapping into Berlin’s pulsating fountainhead of inspiration than your bike.
Germany’s rapidly evolving cycling culture and an ability to ride bikes in parks and (usually) even on the pavement coupled with around 900 km of biking paths trailing all across this metropolis are more reasons you should grab those comfy sweats and discover the historic capital while biking it.
By cycling, you’ll actually see much more and spend less time stuck in a traffic jam inhaling sketchy Volkswagen’s exhaust. It’s a win- win, get pedaling my friend.
Rental bikes are available at Fat Tire Bikes, which have locations at Alexanderplatz and the zoo station. It will cost you roughly 18$ for the first day and renewing the next day will be $15, that rate dips down to $9 on your third day with added karma points for keeping that carbon footprint low on your Berlin groove.
Fat Tire Bikes are hard to miss due to their fluorescent orange color, so although you’ll have a hard time camouflaging these clementines are well built for all other sorts of urban adventures, even those on the cobblestone pavements you’ll have to endure to see most of the hip local shops - worth it. For more detailed info on the routes you can check out Visit Berlin .
Pro Tip : that long cacophony of syllables you keep hearing people yell celebratorily behind you, as you’re flying by at the speed of light, utterly spellbound? That word is Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzung and that’s German for speed limit, Easy Rider. Mellow it out. Here you are subject to speeding fines if found traveling at more than 30km/h (roughly 19 mi/h) in a bike lane. No kidding!
By the way, should the need to take the subway arises, you can bring your two wheeled Clementina, just don’t forget to buy a ticket for the darling bike.
Last tip - Don’t be afraid to get lost, in this cultural melting pot you are sure to stumble upon someone fascinating. Wander out there Lieber Freund!
Minneapolis, United States | A Magic Land of Cyclists and Pedestrians
You heard that right, the city notorious for its grizzly winters and permafrost roads is hailed as the friendliest biking city in the US. Why you say? Well, here’s the thing, in Minneapolis bikers rule the city like the pastry chefs who’ve mastered the swirl frosting technique rule Cheesecake Factory. Respect. It’s also a city with the highest poll numbers of bike commuters, compiling roughly 4500 Minneapolitans who get to work by pedaling. We are impressed.
Bonus points - the city serves over 120 miles of “on-street bikeways” and about 90 miles of off-street lanes. Portland, hush.
Now that we’ve covered the why, here’s the how.
Minneapolis offers cyclists an uber convenient way to explore the city using the Grand Rounds Scenic Byway. The park roads wind around the city and
provide a safe, landscape savvy option for calves conscious beings.
With its ultra responsive city government planning an even more expansive network of bike lanes and an addition to the well-used bike share program, Minneapolis is the go-to for your fix of hipster wanderlust this spring. Spared from the wrath of honking taxis, you’re welcome.
P.S. It’s still bloody cold. We loved biking here anyway.
Tel Aviv, Israel | The Newest Cycling Oasis of the Middle East
Situated on the sandy coastline of the Mediterranean sea, Tel Aviv might well not be one of the first places that come to mind in terms of biking. This is likely because the spike in popularity for cycling for fun and as a means to safely get around is fairly recent here. In 2011 a magic carpet swept in a successful bike sharing program leading to a massive increase of Tel Avivians opting for the healthier choice of personal transportation.
Biking here provides an intimate lens focus on the sunny ultra-hip desertopolis.
Slightly behind its Western European counterparts in terms of convenience, Tel Aviv, offers miles of bike lanes spanning the breathtaking coastline. Head on over to the friendly Cycle shop for bike rentals and take a cruise from the Northern part of the city down the seafront track leading into the historic harbour of Jaffa. Witness the sun set into the warm waters right before your eyes as you’re breezing down the Tayalet Boardwalk. It’s a chance to experience the Middle Eastern wonder in a non plastic beach chair sunburnt tourist under Pepsi umbrella kinda way.
If you need a break from the day’s heat, park along the shaded side of the Shouk Hacarmel market and taste some of the most delicious, sweet as sugar apricots. Try a pomegranate juice freshly squeezed right before your eyes to keep you hydrated and happy. Oh and don’t forget to smile as you’re probably on camera!
December 2015 - A peak inside Hammerhead’s Manhattan HQ
There is a special satisfaction that comes with having one’s own office space and we have loved our spot for the Hammerhead Head Office in a beautiful 10th floor space in Manhattan’s garment district. The neighborhood is centrally located and a 5 min walk from Bryant Park where we frequently take summer team lunches. We have taken much pleasure in efficiently building out an office that is a reflection of us. Here is a brief glimpse inside.
Our main work room is decorated with enormous prints of Tour De France cyclists in the 1950’s. These pictures are striking and beautiful and harken back to a very different age. This was a time before helmets were worn and when riders were known to smoke cigarettes to ‘open the lungs.’ It is said that some even filled their water bottles with wine. The 1947 tour winner, Jean Robic was known for this incredible climbs but was regarded by many as too light for a good descent. His manager decided the solution was to present him with water bottles full of lead at the top of climbs to help with descending.
The beaded Hammerhead shark that hangs in our meeting room was commissioned in Cape Town, South Africa. It is the work of a local street artist Mahlubandile Madlanga who creates magnificent beaded animals and sculptures for sale to tourists along Cape Town’s waterfronts. Three members of the Hammerhead Team, Pieter Morgan, Jon Morgan and Laurence Wattrus are from South Africa and came across him a few years ago selling beaded sheep. He assured them that he could reproduce any animal with lifelike detail, and the Hammerhead he presented four days later does not disappoint.
The Wall of Prototypes is one of the most prominent features in our office. It stands as a constant reminder of the long journey from the earliest crude prototypes to the elegant Hammerhead One that used daily by thousands of users in 50 countries worldwide. Each prototype brings to mind a specific time and place and we are fond of them all. Even the ugly ones.
In our main meeting room stands a large round wooden table with our company logo. This was a spontaneous group project, which Julio our Chief Designer proposed one afternoon last fall. Over the course of a week we each painted and added our talents to the piece. The result is a fantastic lunch and meeting space. We have really grown to love this space.
November 2015 - Learning from Others
Our team at Hammerhead is passionate about startups. We eagerly learn about other young companies and watch with admiration as we see them navigate similar challenges, make some similar mistakes, and often create impressive, beautiful and compelling solutions that shape the world around us. When we face challenges of our own, we have learned that there is no better resource than other entrepreneurs willing to share their experiences and knowledge, and we are extremely grateful to those who have helped us to date. The New York technology startup ecosystem is certainly not as big as those out west, but we have witnessed, and been on the receiving end of tremendous generosity and good will, and we suspect that the more intimate nature of this community is no small factor in this.
During our crowdfunding campaign we drew thousands of backers from 40 countries and as we worked our way through product design and manufacturing challenges and grew closer to building the first generation of Hammerheads, the task of accurately and cheaply fulfilling all these orders seemed monumental. We turned to many of our peer companies for advice and each in turn generously shared their experience and understanding. Ultimately it was the team at Moment Camera who we decided to emulate, using the same fulfillment partner and method, in DM Logistics based in Hong Kong. Our relationship with DM has paid dividends and proven to be an ideal solution at this stage. We have been happy to pay forward the favor by advising others on this and many other aspects of our experience to date.
Our peer startups have proved essential in other ways. The team at Gusto (formerly Zen Payroll) have made our payroll a breeze and allowed us to rest assured that we are fully compliant with the relevant tax and hiring regulations. We turned to the team at Front for a system to order and manage our customer facing email and social media messages and rely heavily on their beautiful system. Our friends at Priori Legal have been an amazing resource in addressing piecemeal legal matters and as lovers of slack we watch with admiration as their team grows from strength to strength.
Starting a venture is not easy, but a healthy startup ecosystem born of a culture of mutual assistance and generosity has a compounding effect driving everyone forward. Thank you to all who have guided us to date and we look forward to sharing our experiences with other.
Cannes Golden Lions!
We were extremely honored to come away with no less than 8 awards at the 2015 Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, including 3 Gold lions!
Our first product, The Hammerhead One, won gold in the categories of ‘Product Design’ for Active Sportswear & Sports Equipment, ‘Cyber’ for User Experience, and ‘Mobile’ for Visual Design and Aesthetic. This is such a tremendous milestone for us after a long 18 months of product development, which has presented numerous unforeseen hardware and software challenges. Our Team has grown to a core of ten split between New York and India in addition to many part time contractors, and this years awards brought a deep sense of satisfaction to us all for the respective parts we have each played in the Hammerhead’s progress to date.
As Graduates of the R/GA Techstars 'Connected Devices' Accelerator Program of 2014 we have a close relationship with R/GA and are extremely grateful to them for their assistance in this application and for the part they continue to play played in our success. The three Gold Lions will adorn the walls of our Manhattan Office.

Shooting our new Product Video
With a complete website overhaul in the works, we decided to replace our current Hammerhead One product video. We chose to completely rescript and reshoot a 3 minute long piece to concisely demonstrate the potential use cases of the Hammerhead One. We wanted a video that would not only be compelling because of beautiful camera angles, scenery, and composition, but also encompass the elements of adventure, discovery, and simple elegant design that lie at the heart of our company's vision. This task proved to be harder than any of us had expected and taught us a great deal about the process of creating visual art. In the end though it yielded footage beyond our greatest expectations.
We settled on two locations for filming. The first, New York, is our company headquarters and was an easy choice for its iconic buildings and substantial urban cycling community, but for the second we wanted something further afield that could showcase the Hammerhead in a magnificent natural setting. Arizona, and specifically the hugely varied and dramatic landscapes around the towns of Sedona and Flagstaff became our focus and we moved six members of our team and our cameraman to a quaint little motel in Sedona for seven days of straight filming. A full week is a substantial amount of time away from the office but we justified this with the assumption that we would be afforded many hours, and perhaps a full day or two to work remotely. None of us anticipated just how much manpower and time would be required to produce the ambitious project we had in mind.
After a full day of scouting out locations through Sedona's awe inspiring red rock formations and the thick Ponderosa Pine forests around flagstaff, we hit the hay for an early morning. 4:30 am wake ups became the standard in our determination to capture the morning light. This required journeying to our location before daybreak to set up in time for a few hours of filming. We were home equally late after film in the soft evening light.
To get the desired shots required filming from sunroofs, bicycles, trunks and side doors, and the deployment of the new Inspire Drone equipped with a Modular 4k Camera. All these pieces had to come together seamlessly, and frequently did not. The drone flew into a bush and had a few close calls with trees, cars would show up and cut into our frame, cameras would malfunction any one of a hundred other things could ruin a shot. At one point we captured just the perfect drone shot only to notice in review that Laurence Wattrus, our Head of Hardware who was spotting for cars at the time, sees the drone and makes a bee-line for the trees as though he was an escaped convict! This provided much comic relief. Dan Zox direct this chaotic scene and brought incredible, experience, patience, and professionalism to this team of otherwise amateurs.
The video required more time and effort than we imagined but in the end we captured shots far beyond our expectation. We are eagerly awaiting the final cut once Dan uses his incredible artistic skill to craft the final video. Update - Our new video is ready and you can see it here at our website. http://hammerhead.io/
May 2015: Shipped!
We are thrilled to have begun worldwide shipping last week. The Hammerhead One is now on its way to our customers and backers! This marks the culmination of our entire community’s support, engagement and encouragement over many months. With more than two years of hard work, we saw development of 36 prototypes, and thousands of hours devoted to building software for an awesome and unique user experience.
We are shipping to more than 4000 customers in over 55 countries and while we are rapidly sending units out, it may take several few weeks before they all arrive, but we are working around the clock to get these Hammerheads out! We are partnering with a Hong Kong based fulfillment House called DM Logistics. They have been a pleasure to work with and extremely helpful as we navigate this first big shipment.
Thank you for sharing our vision over this period and making the Hammerhead One a reality! We look forward to capturing the summer riding season and could not be more thrilled to enter the next phase of our company’s life!
May 2015: Evolution.
It took about 200 hundred years to evolve from two connected wheels to the complex machine that is today's bicycle. This video is the basis of our inspiration to show you how the Hammerhead One has evolved since the idea in 2013.
It's important to take some time to reflect on the tireless effort in the last 18 months. This is in the spirit of "Throw Back Thursday" but more importantly as the day approaches your Hammerhead One will guide you though your rides this summer.
While it's impossible to quantify the effort, you will have a visual sense of how much work has gone into creating an awesome product by looking at The Wall of Progress in our New York Head Office.
The wall is one of the most prominent features of the Office, serving as a reminder of the journey we're on brining our idea to fruition. From a idea to an incredible device being shipped around the globe as we speak. Having a look at the very first Hammerhead Prototype, one notes vast progress compared to the hammerhead we used in our crowd funding campaign. Again compare the crowd funded Hammerhead to The Hammerhead One that’s about to arrive at your door.
We couldn't be more pleased about the position we are in at this point and are confident that you will feel that it was all well worth the wait. We can't wait for you to have this device in your hands, and on your bars!
April 2015: Beta Shipment.
Our beta shipment to the United States and Western Europe was hugely helpful for us to test our complete supply chain. We had supporters use and extensively review the Hammerhead One, allowing us to take massive strides forward as a result.
After incorporating a great deal of feedback from this shipment, we decided to make an improvement to the waterproofing and sealing of the device. The Hammerhead One must be rugged enough to withstand the toughest trails and all weather conditions. In order to ensure this, we had to revise the design and make an improvement to the outer polymer shell and the placement of some of the internal circuitry.
The last few weeks have been hugely satisfying as we’ve completed all the changes we set out to make after our Beta shipments a month ago, and really could not be more pleased with the results! The components coming out of our factory are simply beautiful and it's a thrill to see them in their final physical form.
Our improvements to the electronics are complete and we now have 5000 individual PCBs and other electronic components fully manufactured and tested at our factory in Ningbo China. The tooling changes to our plastic molds are now complete as well and we’ve been churning out hundreds of Hammerhead housings a day for the past two weeks! All that remains now is to assemble each unit and ensure their perfect functioning, before shipping them out. Once assembled, units will make their way to Hong Kong and then to the thousands of customers around the globe.
Laurence has returned to China to oversee this last step. It is fantastic to have him out there on the ground again as we close out the final phase of production.
"You can outdistance that which is running after you, but not what is running inside you." - Rwandan Proverb
Last week we came across this beautiful proverb and the story of Samuel Mugisha. From the vast mountains and subtropical savannahs of Rwanda, to the concrete towers of New York City, cycling has the ability not only to break boundaries, but also to create unwavering bonds. With a large part of our team hailing from the African continent we feel some kinship to the young Rwandan cyclist in this short film trying to make his country's cycling team.
The portrayed hardships and struggles that are so prevalent throughout the continent of Africa, makes the bonds Samuel forms with his cycling team that much more powerful. This is apparent in Samuel talking about setting aside Rwandan ethnic differences, "there are no more Hutus or Tutsis or Twa" he says, "We work as a team and we work as brothers". This is especially prevalent in the work we are doing at Hammerhead, it takes an entire team with different skill sets to make a powerful unit. With this idea at the film's heart, it is truly captivating. One can see Samuel's determination and how meaningful it is for him to wear his nation's cycling jersey. As he strives for a better life for himself, his Mother and a better future for his country Samuel personifies great fortitude.
With its breathtaking imagery and it's seamless editing, this film shows what it takes to be successful. We as a cyclists, can take away a great deal from Samuel. He opens by saying he has to be fearless in order to succeed. He then goes on to say "I forget everything and the bike is the only thing that matters". Fearlessness and laser focus are massive factors in succeeding, whether it be on the bike or in the office.
January 2015
2015 is off to a fantastic start here at our New York Offices. We are entering the final sprint to our ship date and thrilled to be so close. Laurence, our head of Hardware and Julio, our lead designer, have just returned from a 15 day trip to China to visits our manufacturing partners and put in place the final elements before our production run. They returned extremely excited about what they had seen, the progress that we have made, and reported that the first production quality parts from our factory are absolutely beautiful. This is the culmination of about 18 months worth of design work, so it is incredibly gratifying to see the end result taking shape!
All the internal electronic components and PCB’s are coming off the conveyer belts as we speak with the Plastics to follow soon. Laurence and Julio will write about their trip in detail so I don’t want to steal their thunder, but below is a picture of them with our plastics manufacture in Shenzhen, China.
As mentioned in our previous post, we made the decision to change the hammerhead Mount and after several modifications the finished product looks amazing will no doubt be one of the most reliable mounts on the market. Our quarter turn bracket is now interchangeable with Garmin and other devices and we are really excited to release it and see the response from our community.
We also submitted our iOS app to the app store! This is a huge milestone for us and represents the culmination of many hours of work. We are now working full speed on the Android development to have this in place by the time we ship in the next few weeks.
Its now just a few weeks until we ship the Hammerhead One and we couldn’t be more excited!
