Making work in my apartment right now, locked in for Easter trying to make finished pieces. This is will be a chain (I hope) heading for Heather White of Massachusetts College of Art and Design and the exhibition she is curating: BEGINNING MIDDLE ENDLESS Beginning, Middle, Endless…is an international jewelry exhibition curated by Professor Heather White. The exhibition is based on the Surrealist “Exquisite Corps” in which twenty neckpieces are on display. Two different students living in different countries created each neckpiece. Half of the students are from Alchimia Contemporary Jewellery School, Florence Italy, the other from Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Boston MA. The students were asked to create one-half of a neckpiece and Heather White made curatorial decisions on pairings and physically assembled the halves to make whole necklaces in which the unexpected ensues. The exhibition will travel to Boston, MA USA in autumn 2012.

Inside Ted Noten's Studio...

I was at Sieraad in Amsterdam last week with Alchimia. We were lucky enough to meet and get a tour of Ted Noten's studio. We also met his fleet of interns (think there is 4!?), and get a sneal pre view of his next project that will be in the city on Antwerp. Here are some snaps.

I went into this tiny bolt hole of place today in Florence, and found it to be the most charming gallery, with a beautiful chandelier hanging in the middle of the room. Beneath it, were beautiful pieces of handcrafted jewellery but a collective of alchimia graduates. Their are six designers in the collective including: Eunjae Baek, Geraldine Nishi and Margherita do Martino Norante (who I especially liked!)

Patrick Davison

Patrick Davison is a recent graduate of the Glasgow School of Art and is now taking up a place in Alchimia, Florence. Last night I had the pleasure of having dinner with him where I got the chance to see some of the pieces in the flesh and wear one or two. His level of craftsmanship is impeccable with the design of his brooch pins being almost more considered that the over all piece! Really great work I had to share...

This collection is rooted in the interlinking of two core thoughts- man‟s desire to ever increase his ability to control through using technology, specifically „machines‟– and man‟s inability to control his own emotions. My inspiration is drawn from machinery and their stereotypic control features e.g. “on” and “off” buttons, switches, gauges and dials. Based on their physical features and purposes, I have designed this CONTROL collection – jewellery that plays with the idea of the wearer being able to use it to control their emotions. It comprises 7 pieces, made from silver and semi precious gemstones, many of which have the additional feature of moving elements.

“The Ireland of today is still marketed as the land of Joycean splendor and unique indigenous character, but as I sat in a pub looking at the assorted prefabricated tat on the wall, an old crumpled yellowed poster of the ‘shops of Dublin’ struck me as particularly out of time with the old wooden facades, family names and individual character, this inspired me to create my own modern (and in my opinion) accurate ‘Shops of Dublin’ postcard from Dublin – I am a Dubliner and this is my Dublin.

Piece entered to the 21st Century Icons competition run by the National Craft Gallery of Ireland.

Doing research for a project on Irish Sound right now, and looking for songs/speeches/noises that embody 'irishness'. This is a personal favourite.
