Becoming an Outdoors Woman, Mount Traber Bible Camp, Shubenacadie, NS Sept 2015

BOW (Becoming an Outdoors Woman) is a not for profit organization that teaches women outdoor skills, ranging from outdoor cookery to survival skills to archery and firearms use. 

In Nova Scotia, they offer an annual fall workshop in Shubenacadie and a biannual winter workshop in Cape Breton.

I’m grateful to have viewed this show in two different cities. I was at the NGC to see the Colville retrospective and didn’t realize the Pratt show was there at the same time.  on the night I viewed the show in Halifax, I sent a photo of the fishhead to someone I was sweet on. when I saw the show in Ottawa, I was able to show my now-boyfriend the same painting in person.

I visited the Colville retrospective on the very last day it was open; very busy. The last piece shown here always reminds me of a hyper real video game, like a mashup of Grand Theft Auto and Fargo.

It's taken me ten months--from February to November--to complete this project but now that the ends are woven in I've yet to have a week where I don't wear this.

The yarn was upcycled from a gorgeous sweater I purchased from a secondhand store; 100% merino wool. The intensity of the colour initially drew me in. The photos above are not edited. The red really is that saturated.

Seed stitch (also known as moss stitch) remains one of my favourite things about knitting. It provides an irresistible texture; you can't help but run your hands across its nubby surface. It also drapes beautifully. I was a bit nervous that my combination of yarn, knit doubled, and needle size (10.5 or 6.5mm) would cause some issues (seed stitch can be a tad 'hole-y') but it fulled gorgeously. The unevenness of the fabric also helps to trap heat and this ladybug is warm and comfortable to wear.
