BodysIsekKing
utopian futuristic artwork by Congolese sculptor.
I loved these sculptures so much, I had to look up the artist and now I love them even more! And Bodys Isek Kingelez seems so cool! His beautiful fantasy cities were conceived as utopian visions of what African cities could be, in a better world without greed and corruption. Inspired by his experience of living in Kinshasa during the dictatorship of Mobutu Sese Seko, when the city was over-developed and under-planned.
This article is a great introduction to him and his work!
The sheer feeling of relief and joy I felt when I approached Bodys Isek Kingelez’ work was almost overwhelming.

“But in the act of making a poem at least two crucial things have taken place that are different from ordinary life. First, we have shifted the crisis to a bearable distance from us: removed it to the symbolic but vivid world of language.
Secondly, we have actively made and shaped this model of our situation rather than passively endured it as lived experience.”
— Gregory Orr, Poetry as Survival.

“the recording is of a blackbird in my garden in the north of scotland. the idea of the piece is that it's a letter home from a migrated bird, telling the family of its new life and making the connection between the migrant and the homeland.” - jennifer cantwell
