illyana using dani as a pseudo-table is so funny to me
some fave kids again
What if Dani Moonstar took over as the goddess of Death?
Based on an AU and design by @biteorflight and then another design for that AU by @chanth-thara bc he did some really cool stuff with the great horned owl (I think) being an omen of death in Cheyenne culture and I wanted to copycat
I was sure I posted this drawing ages ago but apparently I forgot, which is crazy because I really like how she turned out. Anyway Dani be upon ye
Illyanaâs pink and purple fit from New Mutants vol. 1 #35 âThe Times, They Are AâChanginââ (1985).
Pencils by Mary Wilshire, inks by Bill Sienkiewicz, colors by Petra Scotese

Pls give my girl colors again! Sheâs grown so much since they first introduced the black costume, she deserves an aesthetic change!
Illyanaâs 80s style had soooo much purple and Iâd love to see an artist lean more into the witchy costumingâŚthese are all from The Craft and I feel like so many of these outfits could be sooo Illyana if they were done right
Ahhh you are inspiring me, Iâm totally putting her in these outfits next time I have an art day. Maybe itâll be the first of my art I actually post on my blog hehe ^.^
YESSS GOOD
I donât have a good scanner, just my iPad, but here she is!

Pulling your face close, wanting the inmost. Show me Iâm not afraid of you now.
i want to make a shirt with cannonball on it that just says âlucky ahâm invulnerable while ahâm blasting!â because in new mutants he says it genuinely every single issue

Illyana Moments
From New Mutants (1983) #57-58
The thing that works so well about the new mutants lineup is that itâs made up of weird girls. Thereâs Dani âknows all your worst fears and sees cryptic visions of deathâ Moonstar, Illyana âsocialized by an evil sorcererâ Rasputin, Rahne âbelieves in biblical demons and will tell you about itâ Sinclair, Xuân âliterally inside your headâ Cao Mấnh, and Amara âraised in Ancient Rome but itâs actually not ancientâ Aquilla. Not one of them is remotely normal, and other than Illyana, each of them is thinking âthank god Iâm the normal one here.â.
i say this often and iâll probably continue to say it â while dani is well-adjusted, do not for a single moment think that means she isnât traumatized.
i feel like out of all the new mutants daniâs trauma is the most overlooked because itâs all internal. she has such complex emotions and inner dialogue because she refuses to let herself be weak. while everyone else get to have emotional outbursts, dani isnât allowed to, because sheâs dangerous.
she wouldnât let herself crack because if she cracks, so does her self control, and she will never let that happen.
I think she also struggles because when you look at teammates like Xuân, Illyana, and Roberto, they have very specific traumatic origin stories.
When Xuân and Dani first meet, Dani triggers a PTSD episode because she accidentally pulls memories of the Vietnam war and displays them in front of everyone. Robertoâs story starts with him being a victim of racial violence and then his girlfriend dies in his arms. Illyana was kidnapped and tortured.
Even after she was brutally attacked by the demon bear, temporarily disabled, and had to undergo intensive physical therapy, Dani was treated as somebody strong enough to handle it. While Dani is, of course, strong enough to handle it, she never got a chance to say itâs not fair and have people be kind about that.
I think Dani tends to see trauma as something the whole group shares and she needs to support and lead them through. I think she has trouble understanding that her own origins were difficult and confusing and hard to go through because she looks at her friends and they seem to have had such horrible beginnings.
Iâd love love love to see Dani get to go off the rails. Sheâs such a reserved character who cares about the little details but is able to focus on the big picture in order to get through, and Iâd love to see her really get mad about what sheâs been through. I really liked the conflicts she had with Illyana in the recent Magik series because it shows that Dani has trouble stepping down from the position of âleaderâ even in her personal relationships outside of the team. The series also showed that Dani tends to rely on her physical strength and combat skills more than she uses her mutant ones, and I do think that is in part because Dani is so scared of losing control and hurting people. She never lashes out because if she slips everyone will very literally see the worst of themselves with her right at the center of it.
YES. I love seeing her anger because in part itâs such a quiet anger, but you can feel the tempest inside her wanting to lash out.
It all goes back to that fear, right? In the end, Daniâs biggest fear isnât the Demon Bear or anything else, itâs herself. Sheâs afraid of her own power because of how destructive and harmful it is, and because she doesnât want to inflict it onto others.
Honestly, a Dani with no guardrails could probably decimate the X-Men and likely most superheroes on the planet, because seeing your greatest fear is terrifying. She reflects the worst of your mind until you weep or make you so euphoric you pass out.
I would argue the only reason Dani isnât classified as Omega-Level is because she hasnât tried to find a limit to her power, because sheâs so afraid of it. And thatâs in part why I love her tbh.
Exactlyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!! If Dani Moonstar ever got the kind of off the rails story that Jean Grey or Wanda Maximoff got, the universe would be so over for everyone else. Dani wins that 100%
