Industrial robots are a great contribution of engineering for industries. Robots are used in industries to carry heavy weights that are impossible by men. They are capable of carrying hundred of pounds easily. Also they do monotonous work without getting tired like humans. They are also reprogrammable too to do a different task. Robots in industries are used for a number of purposes like carrying heavy loads, welding, painting, handling materials, moving a product in a conveyor belt to its packaging area and so on. SCARA, an American made robot is one of the popular industrial robots. SCARA stands for Selective Compliance Articulated. A cartesian robot is used in industries for pick and place application where no orientation assemebly is there.

Robots are generally used in industries to handle materials and it is the most popular application. They are used for machine tending, palatalizing and various operations for metal machining and plastic moulding.

Robots are used for welding generally in automotive industry for spot welding and arc welding. Spot welding is the common application in automotive industry and arc welding in metal industry. More small work shop are beginning to introduce welding robot into their production.
Robotic Assembly
Robots are used for assembly operations like fixing, press-fitting, inserting, disassembling, etc. This category of robotic applications seems to have decreased over the last few years with the invention of technologies like force torque sensors and tactile sensors that gives more sensations to the robot.
Robotic Dispensing
Industrial robots are used for painting, gluing, applying adhesive sealing, spraying, etc. Only 4% of the operational robots are doing dispensing.
