I love how Ice knew how Maverick's first training session went because it implies Cyclone called him just to say, "You'll never believe what your husband did."

I understand why they killed Ice. Given Val Kilmer's health problems, they had four choices:

Have the movie without him.

Have him in the movie and not die in the movie, but everyone understands that he's not in good health and will likely soon die.

Have a different actor play Ice.

Have Ice die in the movie.

I'm glad they chose the fourth option. No one wants a Top Gun movie without Iceman or with a knockoff Iceman, and it's better to get closure than have a thousand different fanfics about how Ice might die.

But

I wish they'd have let him hear about how his husband got stranded behind enemy lines, stole an aircraft, and shot his way out (with help).
