We are all batpeople

While Hank has done many academic and business related things throughout his life, him and John always manage to have fun. On their Vlogbrothers channel, they had a video discussion about Batman, with Hank advocating for him and John arguing against him. The two videos were later songified into a song called We Are All Batpeople, made by The Gregory Brothers.

SciShow

SciShow is another Youtube channel that Hank is involved in. Scishow explores many different science topics and delves into interesting questions about our world. Hank stars in and produces many of the videos and enjoys fostering scientific discussions with his fellow costars and various guests.

What learning disabilities have you dealt with

When I was a kid, there was a lot less consensus on what to call these things. These days, I’d almost certainly be diagnosed with ADHD (which I think I had (have?)). The thing I was diagnosed with was a sensory integration disorder, which is a very broad range of disorders that includes some autism-spectrum disorders.

My main symptoms were that I lacked (still lack) fine motor control. I had a hard time communicating with peers and teachers because the amount of information in those interactions was very overwhelming, I wasn’t good at paying attention to one thing for muchtime, and I was (still am?) hyperactive.

Hank is consistently honest with his viewers and creates open discussions that show that even with disabilities, he can thrive at what he loves to do.

Musician

In addition to the more academic focused projects that Hank is a part of, he is also a musician. He first song to become know is called Accio Deathly Hallows, which is a song he wrote while waiting for the seventh Harry Potter novel to be published. It has now been viewed 1.9 million times. Hank has written and performed many original songs and has toured with bands such as Harry and the Potters, and Driftless Pony Club.

I’ll remember feeling welcome for the first time in my life

NerdCon: Nerdfighteria was honestly the best two days of my life. Going into it, I was really anxious about everything because of my anxiety. It was my first convention and I knew I would be separated from my friend basically the entire time, which makes me nervous in any situation. However, I ended up enjoying it more than I thought I would. 

For the first time in years I could talk to people next to me (strangers or not) without being nervous, without my anxiety telling me I was annoying or to shut up. For the first time in even longer, I was able to escape my anxiety completely during Hank’s concert. 

I made friends I would have never even met at NerdCon, online or otherwise. I talked to people and met people I’ve never even dreamed of meeting. 

And even though I didn’t get to meet Hank, who is one of my heroes, that won’t be what I will remember. I’ll remember the faces of people I talked to, their majors, their life plans. I’ll remember jumping up and down at eleven at night and I’ll remember the laughter. More than anything, I’ll remember feeling welcome for the first time in my life, surrounded by strangers, nonetheless.

Inspiration

Similar to topics that John discusses, Hank likes to tackle some important issues. He often connects with his viewers by being honest about the problems he struggles with, and gives inspiration to those who also struggle. This is especially apparent in his vlogbrothers video about failure.

Crash Course

Crash Course is another Youtube channel that John and Hank are heavily involved in. This channel features over 700 informational videos geared to high school students. They cover topics such as physics, biology, world history, economics, and many more. Hank stars in a majority of the science related videos and is a producer for the other subjects. Project for Awesome

Through the Vlogbrothers channel, Hank and John have an annual live-stream charity event called the Project for Awesome. The event lasts for 48 hours and raises money for a wide variety of charities each year. They started this event in 2007 and have sponsored charities such as UNICEF, Water.org, and Save the Children. This past December the project earned its highest amount of over $2 million. While many Youtubers volunteer to host for parts of the live-stream, Hank and John are always a big part of the event, and incentivise viewers to donate.

Vlogbrothers

The Vlogbrothers Youtube channel is a combined project that Hank Green does with his brother, John Green. It began as an experiment for them to post every day, the brothers alternating days, as a way to stay in touch. They were not allowed to communicate by any text based outlets. Now they post twice a week, and video topics range from funny to inspirational to informative. There is also a community of viewers who have formed around them, called Nerdfighters, who together make up Nerdfighteria.
