Interview Part 2
Okay~
Sorry for the delay again between this post and the last. I have been trying to plan life and itās been getting in the way of this haha
But Iāll just pick up where I left off last time :)Ā
So after sitting down, of course I was a bundle of nerves. I could feel my insides shaking, but thatās not really what anyone cares about lol Everyone will tell you something different about the interview. I had read online that the interviewers may try to scare you or that there may be silence in the middle of the interview after you answer a question. Well, I asked one of my trusted professors who happened to also be an interviewer about this. And he said that wouldnāt happen, generally. They know everyone is nervous and worried about screwing up the interview because it is notoriously the hardest part of the whole shebang so they donāt really want to make it any worse than it already is. I will say from my experience, that was not really the case.Ā
Iām not saying they were trying to scare me, and Iām certainly not saying that what I was feeling was purely from the interviewers themselves. But it was definitely tense. Now, this could purely be because Iāve never had a super professional interview before, but it was pretty stressful. It also didnāt help that one of my interviewers was the head of the program for my area, which I knew because I recognized her from the program orientation that had been offered a few months previous.
I wonāt go in too much depth about the questions or anything because they can change quite a bit from year to year and there are plenty of other resources to look at for question examples for practice. Best advice I can give about the questions though is that whatever question you get, be sure to answer in such a way that presents yourself as confident and sure in how yourself.
Also, side note, if you talk with your hands, make sure theyāre not shaking when you try to use them. Trust me. Personal experience speaking right here.
One final thing about the interview. Everyone who knows what the interview is supposed to include knows about the JapaneseĀ ātestā they put you through. I was terrified, honestly. I, at that point, had taken two years of actual Japanese classes and done some self study, but I know I wasnāt where I should have been based on that. Iām here to tell you...DO NOT WORRY ABOUT THE TEST!! Itās for bonus points completely. They arenāt lying when they say that and you arenāt going to blow your interview if for whatever reason you forget one of the first words you ever learned in Japanese. Believe me. Because I did. I bounced back, of course. Asked č±čŖć§ä¼ćæćÆä½ć§ćććGot my answer and moved on. Relax and breath. Itās the best thing you can do when youāre nervous. Oh! And also, if thereās someone that you have been practicing your Japanese with, try to imagine itās them youāre talking to and not a stranger. I get super nervous about talking to strangers, especially in Japanese. But when I tried to pretend it was one of my sensei it helped a lot.
All and all, just show your personality! Be yourself, but your most professional self. Remember, this is a job interview for a very competitive position. Treat it as such. Dress to impress and put your best self forward!
