close up of hand stitched gathers and laser cut design.
lifting up the fabric after it has been laser cut.
For our laser cutting design we decided to photocopy the gathers, we drew around this in adobe illustrator and used this as a template for our laser cutting. we sent our design to the laser cutting machine and it cut out the pattern on the skirt fabric.
we experimented with the gathers ans dyed swatches on the stand. we chose to do a simple short skirt with hand stitched gathers and laser cutting on the side.
We Decided to dye the fabric. we hand dyed it blotting it and splashing it to give the desired effect. we also dyed the hand stitch gathers.
New brief Group Project
Trad v Dig-Fab This projects will introduce you to both traditional methods and processes within fashion design and encourage you to identify how digital fabrication can be used to innovate your product, or make it more viable. Technology and digital fabrication are being integrated more and more into commercial fashion production. Digital fabrication can make your product more commercially viable and or can elevate it by adding details and features not previously possible. Traditional handcraft is also incredibly important. It's ability to give a designer knowledge of their materials and processes elevates work. The aim of this project is to learn traditional skills, to learn how to break these processes down into stages and to look at how digital fabrication can be integrated at one or more stage to make your product more viable or more interesting. You will split into 6 groups of 5 (there will be 1 group of 6) Each group will be assigned a textile manipulation 1. Pleating 2. Embroidery 3. Gathering 4. Smocking 5. Patchwork 6. Quilting You will all individually produce a basic straight skirt. After which you will as a design team produce a skirt. The aim is to as a group produce a skirt using elements of the textile manipulation that you have been assigned. You may use traditional methods of construction, digital fabrication methods or ideally a hybrid of both.

Project Brief
Deconstruction project Fashion Discipline tutors: Ruth and Giordana
At the base of deconstruction in fashion is the process of breaking down established forms related to traditional fashion with an intentional effort to make visible unfinished forms and details of functional elements of garments as an aesthetic choice. Martin Margiela, Yohji Yamamoto, Ray Kawakubo at Comme de Garcon, Rick Owen, Ann Demeulemeester, Dries Van Noten, Dirk Bikkembergs are some of the designers that mastered this deconstructive method of design and created the most memorable catwalks, leaving a permanent mark on creative fashion history.
During this project you are going to create new and experimental shapes using existing garments. Utilising this technique you will garner an understanding of this method of design even as an introduction, which you will develop over the next few years of the Fashion Design Course. Composing garments on the stand will allow you to visualise possible design and construction combinations using elements of existing garments in different roles from where they were positioned originally. Also you will have a better understanding of designing in 360 degrees: front back and side view of a full garment.
Recording your stand work with drawings will increase your draughtsmanship, an understanding of creating a clear or interpretive images of your creations. Visualising your designs using different drawing and painting methods is fundamental in representing ideas and possible illustration styles. So as well as researching designers it is very important for this project to research the designers fashion illustrations as well as fashion illustrators (also a very interesting area associated with fashion). The library has a wealth of books and magazines on the subject that your tutors will advise you to research during the project.
Material: During this project you are required to collect existing garments available to you. Shirts, jumpers, trousers, skirts, jackets, blouses etc.….You are also required to have dressmaking pins, scissors, drawing materials, markers ,paints and paintbrushes, ink , charcoals, glue, tracing paper, acetate etc.
Experimenting with swatches on the body.
Experimenting with colour and shapes. Printing on cotton fabric.
Fabric swatches.
Results of dyed fabric, I started to embellish them with heather.
Experimenting with dyes
I used heather and moss in my first test, This didn't work out.
For my second test I uses raspberries which gave a better effect. I wrapped raspberries and other plants I collected in fabric, I tied both ends and put this on a flat piece of material to dry.
I chose heather at these two stages, in full bloom and dormant. I like how they are complete opposites. I also like the contrast in colour.
I chose heather as my natural object.
New Brief - Fashion Elective
Fashion Elective Brief 2017:
This thing I love:
To be completed prior to starting studio work; select an object that is of importance to you. This object can be either organic or manmade (It must be possible to bring this object into the studio to work from).Consider the inherent qualities of your object and begin to think of moods and themes associated with it. Conduct:
Primary research (drawing, collage, painting, photography etc … Look around you and your environment and see what relates to your object)
Secondary research (magazines, books, internet etc….)
(You will be expected to do extensive analytical drawings from both primary and secondary sources.)
For assessment: (Deliverable are to be submitted on Friday week with only 7 staff contact days until this deadline.
A3 sketchbook – organisation and presentation of your research and ideas. This must include all fabric manipulation swatches (developed from chosen theme)
3 final designs
10 mounted swatches
Materials List:
A3 Sketchbook
A good range of media – pencils, pens, inks, charcoals etc.., adhesives such as masking tape.
Fabric scissors, needs, thread, stitch ripper, dress pins.
You will also need a photocopying card in order to enlarge and reduce favourites
If you have any pieces of materials please bring these with you. If not, we can discuss further what is relevant to your project on Monday. Please also bring a camera with you.
During this 2 week elective it is important to set achievable goals and be considerate of time management. Observe the 2 week calendar and suggested workflow
