architecture evaluation

The aim of this project was to create a series of images showcasing the architect’s vision of a building, trying to see it the way it was planned to be seen without obstructions or distraction.

To critically analyse my process through this brief, I don’t think my research was thorough enough and my class shot for the project before the brief had been given which was helpful with time management but meant it had to be reverse engineered.

I think my final images are unappetising and unskilled and if I personally had more time to complete the project I might have gone for shooting an older building like Markus Brunetti. I also don’t honestly connect with architecture that well but it was good to experience it.

I had no plan for this project as we shot before the brief had been given and were supplied a subject.

I feel a positive aspect of this process was my ability to now use the perspective warp tool in photoshop, and I’m confident I know the steps for it.

I don’t think my final images stayed too true to the architect’s vision as there are obstructions in the way such as vans and lampposts.

Before the submission date we had a class crit and I was able to adjust the images to increase exposure and make other tweaks that slightly improved them which helped a little.

Markus Brunetti - Facades

Markus travelled around Europe in a truck as a nomad for 10 years dedicating his life to taking architectural photographs for this project. He tried to stay in every place for days or weeks to get a true sense of the culture and not act like a whistle stop tourist.

He wanted to play with perspective and create photos that followed classic photography laws - seeing the buildings with a perspective a human wouldn’t have. Perfectly straight and with every detail. He tried to compare the architect’s original drawings to his photos to match them up.

His prints are 1.8m high in order to see all the details. He makes sure to shoot between 5am and 6am to avoid there being any people or traffic in his shots and just have the building by itself.

The aim of this brief was to create your own advert for whatever subject or product you like following research and previous student examples. You were to include various camera techniques that you discovered during your research such as zoom and closeup.

After research, we firstly had to create storyboards to plan each shot and scene of our advert. I feel like my storyboard was successful as it truly mapped the arrangement of scenes and I followed it almost entirely accurately in my final video. I perhaps didn’t make a strong enough distinction between what was a ‘scene’ or a ‘shot’ though and didn’t include enough technical details about lighting or techniques.

When shooting my video I made sure to have multiple takes of every scene to ensure quality and that my shot was right and like I’d planned. I had around 5 takes for every scene and played back each take through the camera screen after I’d taken it.

I used Adobe Premier Rush to edit my video and it was a fairly easy process that I didn’t need much tutorial for as the software was accessible. I chose not to add any music as I had tried to stick with the natural sounds of the objects holding the theme together.

All in all I think my project came out looking amateur but still hopefully presentable.

Given the chance to do this project again I’d rather shoot in a house than a hotel which would give me more chance to move around different scenes and use a more conventional kettle/kitchen setup.

Architectural photography became an established medium in the 1860s and by the 1950s architects were hiring photographers to document their work.

“A tenet of architectural photography is the use of perspective control, with an emphasis on vertical lines that are non-converging (parallel). This is achieved by positioning the focal plane of the camera at so that it is perpendicular to the ground, regardless of the elevation of the camera eye. This result can be achieved by the use of view cameras, tilt/shift lenses, or post-processing.

Traditionally, view cameras have been used for architectural photography as they allow for the lens to be tilted or shifted relative to the film plane. This allows for control of perspective, as well as a variety of creative possibilities.

In a similar fashion to landscape photography, a deep depth of field is usually employed so that both the foreground and background (to infinity) are in sharp focus.

More recently, digital single lens reflex (DSLR) cameras have been used in the field of architectural photography. These cameras also employ detachable, tilt-shift lenses of varying (usually fixed) focal lengths.

When shooting interior and exterior photography is important to shoot in a wide-angle lens.”
