Patti Smith by Lynn Goldsmith
I’m staying on at Sophie Cull-Candy until the 1st of June as I have really enjoyed working with her and feel like I have learnt a lot as well as made a good friend. I will be helping out on the second half of the fashion film on the 26th too which is really exciting.
COMPETITOR ANALYSIS EXAMPLE - MOLLY GODDARD
WEEK 11
Monday 14th May - Today was just some general tasks for the upkeep of the brand, I neatly cut out al of the new branded labels which are for the sales of the t-shirts and the poppy gloves when they get sent out to customers. I also attached branded postcards to the insides of the cardboard boxes which are the packaging for the new earrings once they are sent out.Â
INTERNSHIP WEEK 10
Monday 7th May - Today we didn’t work on the brand, but instead went along to a film shoot to help out Charlie Craggs, a friend of Sophie’s, by appearing shortly in her film. She is a transgender activist who recently published a book ‘To My Trans Sisters’ and also started up Nail Transphobia in which she gives manicures and in turn fights transphobia through education, acceptance, and creating a safe space.
INTERNSHIP WEEK 9
Monday 30th April - Firstly we spent a lot of the day re-organising the studio space, emptying out all of the storage draws and labelling them correctly and organising them into a much neater and easier to use system. We also unpacked the new bubblewrap packaging for the earring sales. Then Sophie and I had a conversation about steps the brand can take to improve its branding - such as its social media content, packaging, etc. I suggested that Sophie made maybe a monthly subscribers email, but not one trying to sell products, like an exclusive monthly update on the brand for its loyal customers - maybe using the series of headshots and discussions on mental health for the Hand-Hoop earrings and other personal updates that people will genuinely read and find interesting.
Tuesday Thursday, Friday - After our discussions on branding, Sophie asked me to research lots of magazines to contact about features on the brand, or interview with Sophie herself. I spent the next couple of days making a big list of both large, small and independent magazines (online and print) which would be cool for Sophie to work with. We then found the most direct emails we could for each of the magazines, even finding more than one editor’s email for each as the more chance of a response the better, and then I emailed them all on behalf of the brand as (studio assistant) introducing S.C.C and saying what we wanted to collaborate on. I sent out the Press Release for AW18 within the emails too.
INTERNSHIP WEEK 8
Monday 23rd April - Both me and Ania completed all of the hand-beading of the floral t’s as the new beads had arrived, we packaged them up ready for customers and organised them into sizes.
Tuesday - I spent the day researching into places in the UK which digitally print onto silk. As many of the websites were unclear, I also had to email the places to ask them to clarify their price lists and whether they covered the cost of the fabric, the digital printing or both.
Thursday 26th April - Today was another photoshoot day! When I got to the studio I got out all of the S.C.C Hand-Hoop earrings and some of the archive ones ready to use. The photographer who is a student and her friend who was modelling arrived. The aim was for the photographer to take lots of headshots around Tufnell Park of the model wearing the S.C.C earrings. Also when the stylist Nicole arrived to collect some pieces, we also used her as a model as she said she would be happy to take part. It’s a possibility that Sophie and the photographer were going to turn this shoot into a series.
INTERNSHIP WEEK 7
Tuesday 17th April - Collected pieces from a stylist at Camden Town
Thursday 19th April - After getting to the studio my first task was to travel to meet Nikki on the 259 bus in order to return the pieces she borrowed from the brand. Then the rest of the day, I spent helping Sophie prepare for the photoshoot we were doing on Sunday. I carefully removed the draped gloves that had been stitched onto the t-shirts, marking each stitch point on the t-shirt and glove, so that I could replace the secured stitches with poppers. This was done so the t-shirts could be washed easily before the photoshoot and also will be done to any that are for sale.Â
Sunday 22nd April - Photoshoot day!
We travelled to Bermondsey, lugging all of the collection and extra samples pieces, fabric for back drop, frame to use as set, shoes, accessories, etc that morning. Unfortunately when booking the date with everyone and the studio, we hadn’t realised that it fell on the day of the london marathon which meant the bridge and many roads were closed off so we had to travel completely by tube and on foot which was a struggle with lots to carry!
The shoot went really well, working with a lovely model, photographer who was shooting on film, makeup artist and a hair stylist. I spent the day helping to care after the garments, styling outfits, getting food and drinks, helping to move around the frame for the set, and just being ready to help in any way I could. It was really fun and actually went extremely smoothly as everyone worked well together and was particularly stress-free! I have seen some of the film photos and they look incredible, unfortunately I can’t share them on here as they haven’t been published yet but I think the whole team will be extremely happy with the outcome!
INTERNSHIP WEEK 6
Monday 9th April - As Sophie was unwell, I had two stylists to drop off pieces to and then work from home on competitor analysis. The stylists were both in Dalston, I first dropped off earrings to a stylist in De Beauvior road (after getting lost by old street station trying to find the correct bus stop I needed) and then got another bus to drop off clothes to a Stylist based at Lighthouse Studios in Shacklewell lane. The stylist wasn’t there when I arrived and had a form to sign for Sophie, so she said she would scan it across instead.Â
On Tuesday and Thursday, I spend my time completing the competitor analysis to present to Sophie on the Friday. I will upload an example of what I researched and recorded in my next post. The brands I researched were:
Clio Peppiatt, Emma Brewin, Molly Goddard, Paloma Wool, Saks Potts, JW ANDERSON, & Sophie Cull-Candy herself for comparison.
Friday - I travelled to Dalston Junction to collect the tulle pieces from the stylist in Lighthouse studios and then to a print shop in Dalston to meet Nikki who was using the tulle pieces for a photoshoot with her glitter makeup brand. Then i returned to the studio and went through the competitor work with Sophie.
INTERNSHIP WEEK 5
Tuesday 3rd April - I made a start into researching how would be best to create competitor analysis for the websites and social media and which brands to use as the competitors, discussing my plan with Sophie. On my way home, I returned to Elle magazines post room again to collect the Poppy Gloves that had been out on loan to a stylist.
Thursday 5th April -Â
Friday 6th April -Â
INTERNSHIP WEEK 4
Monday 26th March - Continuation of hand-beading the Floral T-shirts with Ania. Â We decided to split the beading to make it quickest, I beaded the bracelets (in orange) and the red & gold beads that go in the centre of the flowers, while Ania did the blue stems.
Tuesday 27th March - I continued with beading the floral T’s.
Thursday 29th March  -  My first task of the day was to source blue beads in Kentish Town as we had run very low on the blue beads for the stems of the flowers on the t-shirts. There were similar beads but I decided they weren’t a close enough match to what we had been using so didn’t buy them.  Sophie then sourced the beads online instead.  After my return to the studio, I packaged up sample items for collection by 2 stylists. Then me and Sophie both labelled sizes in the S.C.C X Alice Hartley collaboration screen-printed t-shirts that were left over and packaged them each into their own boxes ready to be sent out to by Alice who was to sell the leftover stock through her website/studio.Â
INTERNSHIP WEEK 3
Day 13 - Wednesday 21st MarchÂ
On this day, I had samples I needed to deliver to a stylist as they were to be worn by Eliza Doolittle at her show that night. I set off from the studio, having put the address into my phone and was on my way to Kingston. Unfortunately when I arrived there and was unable to find the place I realised that my phone hadn’t used the whole address like I put in and had taken me to the completely wrong place - I needed to be somewhere in Shoreditch not Kingston! I was feeling really anxious but I phoned Sophie to tell her my mistake and apologise. She managed to contact the stylist and in the end we arranged that I dropped the pieces to her just out of my way home on the Northern Line at Old Street underground station. I managed to get everything to her in time which was a relief, but was still quite upset that I’d made such a mistake (even though Sophie wasn’t even worried or annoyed with me). I then downloaded extra map apps to my phone including citymapper, so that from thereon I could check the address on multiple apps to make sure I was going to the right place and to find the best journey. Â
INTERNSHIP WEEK 3
Tuesday 20th March
INTERNSHIP WEEK 3
Day 11 - Monday 19th March
I spent the day making lots and lots of paper flowers ready for the shooting part 1 of the fashion film the next day. We decided to skip using the decorative tape to make the job quicker so we could get as many flowers made as possible!
INTERNSHIP WEEK 2
Another general day, I made a collection from DalstonÂ
*to be edited*
INTERNSHIP WEEK 2
Day 9 - Thursday 15th March
In the morning it was a continuation of making paper flowers in preparation to show to John who was visiting that afternoon to discuss plans for the fashion film he would be shooting for Sophie. I can’t give details on the plot but it is a more surrealist style than the one Sophie has already made for this collection. It was really interesting and fun to be present whilst Sophie & John were discussing ideas and I even made my own input at times. After John left, we went over my boards I created for the 70′s typography/t-shirts research.
