Hanul Family Alliance

Hanul Family Alliance (HFA) is a 24-year-old independent nonprofit organization whose mission is to empower individuals and families in need to enhance their quality of life by providing assistance in all areas. Supported by government agencies, foundations, nonprofit organizations, corporations and concerned individuals, HFA has been a leading force in delivering a broad range of community services to meet the various needs of Korean Americans in the Metropolitan Chicago Area.

On April 11, Kathy Chan spoke on behalf of the Illinois Maternal and Child Health Coalition at the Korean American Community Services. The presentation given, “How women, adolescents, and communities of color benefit from the Affordable Care Act” outlined positive and negative factors that defines Illinois health care and the health care reform that is active in America. The video as seen above explains the brunt of the presentation. The remaining material covered in the workshop included information on how to acquire health insurance as children, women with preexisting conditions, women over a certain age limit, and families.

We need volunteers on Friday, September 23 - the day before the event - for stage and booth set-up from 4pm to 8pm.

We also need assistance on Saturday, September 24 - the day of the event - for registration, traffic, raffle, and clean-up assistance.

Career Exploration Speaker: Art and Music

Wonjung Bae, Speaker for the Career Exploration Workshop: Art and Music!

Wonjung Bae is a filmmaker interested in the issues of identity, modernity, and art. Born in Busan, South Korea, Bae made her first documentary, Grand, Father and Me, at age sixteen and came to believe in the power of visual storytelling.

Bae has won numerous awards including the 38th Student Academy Award for Documentary Category, the 16th Annual Directors Guild of America Student Film Award for Women Category, the Kodak Cinematographers Scholarship 2010 Bronze Award, Viva Doc International Student Documentary Competition Best of Category Award for Arts and Humanities, the Chris Award from 58th Columbus International Film & Video Festival, Ohio, the Best of Fest Award from DOCUTAH International Documentary Film Festival, Utah, the Korean Broadcast Institute Student Film & Video Competition Best Documentary Award, and the YMCA Cultural Ministry Awards for Student Filmmakers, Korea, among others.

As the cinematographer for most of her films, Bae shoots on both digital and film. Bae benefits from her background in 35mm still photography and dark room training for 5 years in apprenticeship under a respected Korean documentary photographer, Youngsu Kim. Bae majored in political science for her bachelor’s degree in Korea University, Seoul, and is a MFA candidate at Columbia College Chicago Film & Video department, Chicago. Before her graduate studies, Bae worked as a video-journalist and photography editor for World Press Photo awardwinning photojournalist, Sungsu Cho in Seoul, Korea.

Bae relishes uneasy and humane characters and their evasive attempt to communicate. Bae’s recent projects include: Blunt Edge, a HD biography of a Jewish painter and her 80th birthday; Museum of Exile, an animated documentary about teenage Assyrian refugees from Iraq living in Chicago; and, a 16mm film about the Krenovian furniture making process and its exquisite artisanship. Bae believes the art of documentary and fiction are equal avenues in achieving a similitude of the real. Bae seeks to capture the pertinent formal and aesthetic properties of the medium that are indispensable to realize each story. The result of her cinematic endeavors is the deliberate, raw human stories she shares with her audience.
