DOCUMENTING MY SUMMER
WHAT IS IT?
I combined two different objects which made my images surreal. The juxtaposition makes the images confusing and this fits the title What is it?

SAME SUBJECT, 4 ANGLES
For this shoot I used the same model and experimented with different angles. I used stars as a theme for the props and decorated the models face and hair with star stickers.

MY FAVOURITE...
For this weeks title, ‘My Favourite’ I shot images of my favourite fruit pineapples as the focus. I added other props and used unique composition to express some of my other favourites like music that was shown through the small vinyl records and fashion shown by the jewel embellishment and added mesh material in some of my images. I used digital manipulation to add more colours (purple in particular) which I think made this shoot more exotic. I really enjoyed shooting this because I was excited to eat all the pineapple after :)

MORNING LIGHT
I captured morning light whilst travelling/sight seeing through Paris with my family.

DOCUMENTING MY SUMMER
LOOKING UP, LOOKING DOWN
I took these images on a day out in Richmond park. I mostly shot in a low angle looking up at the model. I felt like this angle made the model look more confident and powerful.

SELF PORTRAITS
I took some portraits using natural lighting to create a soft atmosphere. I manipulated my images black and white to enhance the raw details and kept the images simple.

FRAME YOUR SUBJECT
I took images of boring everyday subjects and digitally manipulated them to create interesting abstract shots. I used the liquify and pen tool to focus and frame the objects to create eye catching images.

DYNAMIC BLACK AND WHITE
ARTIST INFLUENCE:
1. For my shoot I was influenced by the fashion photographer Solve Sundsbo.
2. I have tried to replicate the photographers work by using a studio like location and imitating the delicate and calming atmosphere.
3. I have been able to create similar aesthetics to the artist study images by putting minimal makeup on the model and using a black and white digital manipulation overlay. This was successful.
4. However, I could improve how well my images take influence from the artist study by actually taking the images in the studio with professional lighting. Not just a flash which caused harsh shadows on the white wall.
TECHNICAL/AESTHETICS:
5. 6. I used deep depth of field to capture the most detail I could from the model as the background was plain and my aim was to focus on the model. I also used a fast shutter speed to be able to capture the fast changes in expression of the model. I didn’t have any professional studio lighting therefore I had to use a flash gun. I made my images monochrome to enhance the relaxing atmosphere. I set the white balance to a flash setting to balance the exposure.
7. The flash gun made the lighting harsh and the strong shadows created more of an artificial atmosphere which was different to the delicate soft lighting that I had initially intended. However overall my images were able to better suit/link to my title of ‘dynamic black and white’.
8. The subject of my images are the model and I have positioned the model in different angles but not directly facing the camera. I have used no props and put natural makeup on her to try and capture the raw beauty of the model. The lack of distractions from other bold and eye catching props/makeup make the viewer automatically focus on the model
9. A technical aspect of the shoot that I am pleased with is the use of different angles in my shoot.
10.To improve this shoot, technically, I would shoot the images in a studio with a fill light which will create the soft and flattering light. I could have also just made my model pose further away from the wall which would have minimised the harsh shadows.
11.I have digitally manipulated my images to enhance the facial features. First, I used a B&W overlay. Then I changed the levels and curves layer to bring out the different dimensions. My most effective manipulation was changing the contrast of the image as this gave my images more depth linking back to the project title of ‘dynamic black and white’.
DEVELOPMENT:
12.This shoot fits into my title of ‘dynamic black and white’ as I have created powerful and charismatic black and white portraits.
15.This shoot doesn’t have a clear-cut meaning as it was shot for aesthetic purposes.
SUMMERY:
18.Overall I believe my shoot was successful. I was able to take influence from the artist study and create my own interpretation of the photographers work.
19.Technical improvements to make:
-take in studio
-try mimick the delicate aesthetics
-soft fill lighting
-find a way to minimise backdrop shadows.

Solve Sundsbo
DYNAMIC BLACK AND WHITE
PHOTOGRAPHER PROFILE:
1. Solve Sundsbo is a male fashion photographer. He is married and has kids and said in an interview that he already lives a real life therefore wants to create the opposite in his work.
2. He is a London Based Photographer and was born in Norway. This influenced him to respect and experiment with otherworldly concepts, stylistic versatility and open-mindedness towards new technologies, from 3-D scanning to hand-painted retouching.
3. He produces Fashion commercial photography, mostly in studio locations with dramatic lighting. He has produced work for publications such as Vogue, i-D, NYTimes, etc. and has also shot imagery for major fashion and beauty brands like Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Louis Vuitton and Estee Lauder.
4. Sundsbo only decided to become a photographer in his early twenties. He did a photography course in London for a few months before he was given the opportunity to work as Nick Knight’s assistant and the pair worked together for almost 4 years. His close work between Craig McDean and Nick Knight influenced/taught him that he should be idealistic, courageous, and trying to push boundaries with the world of image making.
5. In an interview with The Creative Class, Solve Sundsbo said that he ‘lives in a very real life, so he doesn’t feel like he needs to do a sort of kitchen sink drama in his photographs. Therefore he tries to find something less real in his work, idealising things.’ This explains the diversity of his work.
PURPOSE OF IMAGES:
1. The images were all taken for the publication Love Magazine. However they are from different series. The images of Cara Delevingne and Kendall Jenner were both from the same editorial “Kendall on Cara” and Cora Corre and Gigi Hadid for different editorials.
2. I believe the images from “Kendall on Cara” were supposed to show friendships and relationships through half the images being humorous with the mid-laughing silly poses whereas the other half of the images giving a contrasting more relaxed atmosphere with the damp hair and simple makeup. I believe this shoot was aimed as the younger age group reading Love Magazine. The same goes for the other two images having been shot under similar lighting and the same calming atmosphere.
TECHNICAL/AESTHETIC:
1. The subject of these images are purely the models. They have been positioned to a slight angle or are directly facing the camera which I think was to focus the viewers’ concentration on the model. The photographer has also achieved this by using black and white manipulation and a colourless/dull atmosphere from minimal clothing/makeup and instead used the models hair to add dimension.
2. I feel like these images were supposed to make the viewer feel aesthetically pleased and relaxed through the clean and fresh atmosphere.
3. I think the photographer has taken these images in the studio with a fill light and reflector which gave the models a flattering complexion. I also believe that the image with Gigi Hadid was achieved by positioning her slightly away from the backdrop to create a grey background as the flash did not fully reach the backdrop. Then Solve Sundsbo used digital manipulation to make these images black and white. The use of soft lighting has been able to give the models a flattering look and create a crisp atmosphere.
4. The models are the focal point of these images. Therefore the composition is very simple. In one of the images the models face takes up the whole image leaving no negative space. The photographer then used the models hair to make it look as though it was floating covering her face and giving the image an interesting composition. Because these images were simple and used no interesting props or makeup, the photographer cleverly used hair as a composition point to keep the aesthetics.
DEVELOPMENT:
1. I chose to study this photographer because I like fashion photography and I haven’t tried simple black and white images focused just on the model. I chose these specific images because Sundsbo’s other Black and White images were too dramatic and provocative with the harsh lines created using strong artificial key lights.
2. The purpose of my images will also be for aesthetic purposes to show the simple and concentrated attention on just the model. If I was to have a specific audience for my work I would say people who enjoy admiring interesting portraits.
3. Their won’t be a definite meaning behind my shoot however it will definitely link to the title of ‘Dynamic Black and White’ because I will manipulate my images to make them B&W and add a high contrast for a stronger shadow effect.
4. I will take on the same B&W digital manipulation technique and flattering flash lighting technique from the artist study to create a similar delicate atmosphere. I also plan to use the messy hair composition technique for the same effect.
5. I will not use the damp hair in my photography.
