Martha Hunt by Solve Sundsbo
this collection presents Martha Hunt by Solve Sundsbo for Lui magazine December/January 2013. The photographs display the female body in nude which gives an exposed and tasteful effect. the use of heavy linear shadows somewhat dresses the model and blends parts of her into the dark background. by presenting these images in black and white it creates a harsher contrast and accentuates the dynamic impact of the photograph.
Artist influence:
1. Daniel Hachmann, his use of buildings in his photos.
2. I have used the same angles to try and replicate his images.
3. This has been done successfully because the shapes look unusual.
4. I could improve my images by using a steeper angle and using straight lines on buildings like the artist did.
Technical/ Aesthetic:
5. I have used composition in my images to make sure that the shapes are well shown. Also, the textures in the images are rough, smooth and glossy and this creates depth.
6. I have used natural lighting but it was cloudy, which makes me feel calm.
7. The subject of my images are the buildings, I have positioned them on an angle because I feel like that looks more interesting.
8. The technical aspect that I am most pleased with is the black and white.
9. To improve this shoot technically, I could keep it in colour instead of black and white.
Development:
10. This links in with the title ‘dynamic black and white’ as there images are in black and white.
11. The dark tones represent the low times in someone’s life and the lighter tones can suggests good times in someone’s life.
Summary:
12. I think that overall it was a successful shoot as I think that black and white worked well with the subject, the buildings.
13. Technical improvement: 1. the colours 2. the textures could be more varied.
Daniel Hachmann
My images were inspired by Daniel Hackmann. I like his idea and I think he has exacted it very well in order to make the ordinary look extraordinary. However I don’t think I have created images to anywhere near his standard as I uses my phone in order to photograph these images in between thunder storms. I lack the grainy texture and the angle isn’t quite right, both these things annoy me greatly. If I was to redo the shoot I would for a sunny day as to get a clear contrast between back ground and sky. However due to the way I have edited the contrast is good within the buildings s s highlights their details which I do like.

ARTIST INFLUENCE:
1. Who/what was the influence for your shoot?
My influence for this shoot was Solve Sundsbo who is a successful fashion photographer
2. How have you replicated this in their work?
I have replicated his work in my images by shooting close up portraits and then using Photoshop to filter them black and white
3. Has this been done successfully? How?
I think this has been successful as the images clearly replicated the same style and some of the compositions he uses
4. What could you do to improve how well your images take influence from the artist study?
If I were to improve the artist influence I why re-shoot these images in the studio with proper lights to make them look more professional
TECHNICAL/AESTHETIC:
5. What technical skills have you employed in your shoot? Think about the following: Depth of Field, Shutter Speed, composition, lighting, ISO, colours, textures etc.
I primarily used a shallow depth of field for this shoot with an appropriate shutter speed to let a good amount of light in
6. Why have you use this technical skill?
I used this to get the most out of the light sources I had and also to give an accurate replication of my artist study in my own way
7. What lighting have you used? How does it make you feel?
I use natural lighting combined with flash for this shoot and this makes me feel joyful as the images are brightly lit and so gives them a more positive atmosphere
8. What is the subject of the images (model, prop, etc) How have you positioned them/it, why?
The subject of these images is my model and so I have positioned her in the centre of the frame, firstly to replicate my artist study but secondly to make them more naturally appealing to my audience
9. What technical aspect of your shoot are you most pleased with?
I am most pleased with how I have edited the black and white filter on Photoshop to create a clear contrast between the model and background
10. To improve this shoot, technically, what could you do?
To improve this shoot technically I could try using a different camera lens to make the shallow depth of field more obvious and effective
11. If you have manually or digitally manipulated your image, how has the manipulation enhanced your original image?
I used Photoshop the edit a black and white filter over my images, this enhanced them by helping them relate to the title more and creating a heavier contrast between the light and shade
DEVELOPMENT:
12. How does it link to your title?
This photo links to my title as the filter and editing makes the black and white colours from background and model contrast with each other to make them stand out
13. What is the meaning/story is behind this shoot?
The meaning behind this shoot is to draw attention to the models beauty and draw the audience in using particularly her eyes
14. How would you go on to develop this idea?
If I were to develop this shoot I would try using bold makeup to try and enhance the black and white contrast even more
SUMMERY:
15. Overall how successful is the shoot? Why?
I think this shoot is successful because it sucsessfully replicates my artist study in my own way but also the model is really in focus so you can see her face in great detail making it more interesting.
16. What could you improve technically? Create an action list on what to remember for your next shoot!
Studio lighting, different lens and more obvious shallow depth of field

Dynamic Black and White
Artist Influence:
I looked at the work of Daniel Hachmann to inspire my shoot
I used similar angles and ideas of perspective when shorting as well as informing my pieces with the angular shapes that Hachmann shoot in his Urban Tribe shoot.
I feel that this worked well as I was able to use a variety of different angles to portray the buildings in different ways and include the interesting architectural features of the structures.
To improve the influence of the artist I would shoot at a similar time of day to achieve similar lighting as his images had lots of contest between highlights and shadows which I think works well, especially when shooting interesting buildings .
Technical/ Aesthetic: For my images to be successful I used a deep depth of field, so that the whole building was in focus and I was able to capture the small details as well as shooting in bright daylight to increase the amount of contrast in the images. By using bright sunlight it also increased the textures of the walls and surfaces. I used natural daylight as i was shooting outside, and feel that it makes the building seem more cascading and more threatening, due to the strong tonal differences and the dynamic effect this creates when combined with black and white. The main focus in my images is the range of perspectives I have used combined with the types of buildings, to change how they are perceived by the eye and how this creates a dynamic effect. I am really pleased with the compositions of my images and how i was able to really focus on the shapes of the buildings and make them the main part of the photographs.
If i was to Improve this shoot technically I would experiment by shooting on a film camera as I feel this would give the images more texture. I changed my images into black and white and this helped increase the dynamic, as well as allow to me to follow the brief “dynamic black and white”
Development: This shoot links to the title as the buildings that I shot have a very towering effect and this increases dynamic as well as them being in black and white. I wanted to get across the idea of how angle and perspective greatly influenced how we see the world around us. If I was to develop this idea I would shoot different, smaller objects from different angles to make them appear a lot bigger as I feel this would be an interesting area to explore (angle and perspective)
Summary: Overall I feel this shoot worked well as I was able to use a variety of angles on a number of different buildings as well as create a dynamic contrast when the images were edited to black and white. To improve technically I would shoot on a manual camera setting so that I set up the camera, as this could provide some interesting outcomes! I would also try shooting on black and white film.

DYNAMIC BLACK AND WHITE
@esherphotography @photographystephen
1)The artist study for this shoot was Solve Sundsbo and how he created dynamic black and white portraits through the use of props. 2) I have replicated this in my work as I have also selected appropriate props and poses that mimic that of Sundsbo’s as well as keeping to the monochrome theme. 3) I feel I have done this successfully as it is obvious from my artist study images that Sundsbo was the key influence and I also feel I have selected the right props, location and composition to make the images successful. 4) To improve how well my images take influence from the artist study I could try different poses and adjust the studio lighting to create the same sort of soft atmosphere Sundsbo has captured in his images. 5) The technical skills I have employed in my shoot has been the use of different props to create different textures as well as considering colours that would have the most impact in black and white e.g. using white feathers and lace. 6) I have used these technical skills (colours and texture) as I wanted there to be a harsh contrast in my images, therefore I paired white props with a black background. I also used lots of texture within my images as I didn’t want them to appear flat and dull, however they also reflect the abstract element Sundsbo has in his own images. 7) I have used hard studio lighting for this shoot to demonstrate the professional quality of Sundsbo’s images. This type of lighting in particular has allowed me to create quite intimate and personal images, therefore making the viewer feel quite inquisitive. 8) The subject of my images is the model and their relationship with the props. I have positioned the props so that they are on the models face so as to create an obscurity to the face. 9) The technical aspect I am most pleased with in my shoot is the effect of using studio lighting as it has allowed me to create quite professional looking images. 10) To improve this shoot technically I could try shooting under soft studio lighting to diminish the harshness of the hard studio lighting and in turn reflect more of an intimate atmosphere. 11) I used slight digital manipulation when using Photoshop, simply just adjusting the images to black and white and then adjusting the colour balance so that the black and white contrast wasn’t too stark. I sharpened the images slightly and also adjusted the levels of the image to bring out the full potential of the black and white tones. 12) This shoot links to my title ‘Dynamic Black and White’ as I have taken the word dynamic and used it in the sense of it meaning energetic and innovative to create quite unusual looking black and white portraits that have quite a fine art quality. 13) The meaning behind this shoot is that it is trying to portray humans as an art form that can be enhanced by props (feathers and lace in particular) and as a result you end up with a product that is quite innovative and unusual to the human eye, even though the viewer is essentially looking at their own form. 14) Overall I feel this shoot has been very successful as I feel I have captured the elements of Sundsbo’s work, however I feel I have taken these ideas and replicated them in my own way i.e. slightly different studio lighting. 15) Action list to improve technically: -Experiment with different types of studio lighting. -Experiment with different props to create different textures. -Try out different compositions/poses to create alternate angles.
