[ Now, since I’ve been in mood for my AU!Chief lately, let’s do him! 

AU!Chief is a lonely man, often wandering, or patrolling the halls of Jisris’s Covenant ship or whichever destination they happen to go to. 

Perhaps the most notable thing for him is for when he meets other humans- while he knows , or rather deeply brainwashed, humans are the enemy since they are off the UNSC typically, he can’t help but to feel drawn to them often times than not. He’s even been known to occasionally visit the human prisoners, what ones his MASTER does find, and imprisons. 

There is something significant within these interactions-- 

but he can never figure out exactly what. 

Deep down, he enjoys them, knowing there are other humans to interact with. ]

Almost curiously, she followed along a half-step behind him, but it wasn’t the familiar-looking food that had her attention. If he wanted the usual fare, well, she wasn’t going to argue, but so long as she was away from that God-forsaken ship, well… she wanted something else.

As they waited, Grace chanced a look around, discreetly studying the vendors around them. All of them were hawking something - from various types of food (some that looked more edible than others,) to trinkets, jewelry, and colorful garments, and one seller that she could see was even surrounded by live animals of some sort, but she wasn’t close enough to get a good look.

Not that she ever would have entertained the notion of bringing another living thing back to that waking nightmare, but… it would be nice to satiate her curiosity, at least.

When it was finally their turn to be served, Grace quietly indicated her interest in a papery “basket” of some kind of fried meat skewers, while her erstwhile companion made his selection…

It was absolutely amazing to say the least--

They could enjoy this planet and see what it’d offer them. And what it could offer was absolutely grand. Chief definitely made a mental note of his leaders’ getting a grand gift of sorts ; Jisris didn’t have to do this for either of them... it had out of his good heart. 

Of course, they had been giving a ‘credit card’ sort of thing to use... 

1077′s eyes scanned the selection, observing all the sort of different things. He eyed what Grace had and decided to pick that out as well.

‘‘Looks good... You got the Card?’‘

Came his gravely tone, as his stomach gave a slight growl. ...Almost annoying. He tried to eat as m7uch as he could, but he.. couldn’t finish breakfast earlier on in the day. Anxiety had flared up, effectively ruining his appetite.

A quiet sigh slipped past her lips, and her gaze drifted down to her feet. There was not a day gone by when she did not miss the brothers and sisters she’d lost during the War.

“There were more of us… at least, up until Reach.”

Artemis shrugged at his second question, a faint smirk flickering across her lips.

“I would say that it’s classified, but I’d tell you anyway. If I… if I knew you better, at least.”

Chief’s stomach flopped at that very thought. More downed Spartans... As if it wasn’t enough of them dead already... Due to all the fighting and many years that had passed, even Sam’s death was still within his mind, just.. lost however. 

‘‘.... Oh.’‘ Was his quiet response. Kind of expected. The Covenant could be very nasty to deal with. 

Another dull response-- ‘’Oh.’’ He held a pause, before elaborating, ‘’That’s understandable at the very least.’’

‘‘Uh… sir?’‘ 

Chief shifted slightly. Lasky was doing something again that utterly confused him. Why was it always with Lasky of all people?

“That’s right, its linked to sadness John. I….understand emotions are something you push aside. But you /can/ deal with them. But, like with everything, it takes time to heal. I can’t say I’ve gone through something like you with loss. But I’m here for you John, always.” Thomas’s voice was softer, and the man reached out and lightly patted the others arm. It wasn’t often he came to him with this stuff, but he was glad he did. It wasn’t hard to see that Lasky had a lot of respect for him.

“And I think mostly everyone on this ship is shorter than you. But at least I get a nickname, makes me feel better.” Lasky chuckles softly, somewhat wondering what expressions the other was using. Or if he even uses them at all. He looked back at him, raising a brow, a little surprised at his question.

“Well. There isn’t much people who call me that, but there are some. Mostly the other asshole Captains if I’m being honest. And one of my men, but he kinda has his hood days. James isn’t that all bad.”

...What were the use of emotions? The thought immediately went across his mind. As a soldier, you only.. DID. But loss.... It was something that seemed to affect John more than others. A lingering presence, all the matter in back of his mind. Something... he wasn’t able to let go as easily as some others could. 

Chief’s helmet moved slightly towards Lasky upon hearing that bit. Cort-- no, it was too painful for her name... The blue haired woman... 

She had said that to him quite a few times. She’d be there for him. 

That made his stomach flop into itself upon thinking that. 

‘‘Sir...’‘ It was a softer reply, as opposed to his usual monotonous voice. ‘‘I.... okay.’‘ Pretty dumb response, but he couldn’t form the proper words or feelings. Lasky was like C-- her. 

‘’You’re... like her.’’

He cleared his throat, before shifting quite quickly to the next subject. ‘’I suppose then.. sir, I guess I could... call you like that once awhile.’’ Awkward response. ‘’They don’t know you.. You do a perfectly adqueate job, sir. Er, Shrimp.’’ James... now, he could never understand what James’ problem was with Spartans especially...

“I was one of those pulled. I’m….” A pause. “Very different to all of my kin.”

That would have made sense.. Very little had survived Reach’s fall. Impressive. 

‘‘Who had survived besides you?’‘ Was his immediate response, before also asking, ‘‘...Very different?’‘
