using fat people to illustrate greed

using thin people to define health and happiness

using fat people as an example of ill health and sadness

bringing up a fat person’s health at all

the use of headless fat people in news reels

using fat as an insult

thin people jumping in on conversations about the lived experiences of fat people and making it about them

the idea that a fat person who is in comfortable clothing is “sloppy”

basically, treating fat people any differently than a thin person.

The rampant ableism in social justice work is what has made it unsafe for me to do anything outside of online activism. The cultural expectation within social justice communities to push ourselves beyond the brink, over and over again, is ableist and incredibly dangerous, oftentimes life threatening, for those of us living with disabilities. This expectation creates a culture that is not only inaccessible to people who are neurodivergent, physically disabled, chronically ill, etc., but also one that is overtly hostile.

Before you judge someone for their level of involvement, consider the fact that they may be doing all they can safely do. Consider the fact that in-person activism may make their disabilities worse, may end in emergency room visits or near-death experiences. Consider that not all disabilities are visible and that you cannot know the degree of suffering or disability someone is experiencing just by looking at them.

We have to take care of ourselves first. And for disabled people, the ableism that is rampant within activist culture and social justice work often makes this impossible unless we take a step back and set boundaries. And there is no shame in that.

hi I really hate to do this but to keep things short my mom kicked me out of the house and my dad went back on his word to take me in so now I have literally no where to go (or live). You have a right to come out of trauma uglier and meaner and angrier and less forgiving. And being a “bad survivor” does not impinge upon your validity as a survivor or how deserving you are of care, healing and recovery. Grow claws and fangs, hate the people who hurt you, hold on to your grudges ‘til your grave, never forgive and never forget if that’s what you need. And don’t let anyone judge or shame you for what gives you that scrap of safety, or security, or healing, that the cruelty of others had denied you.
