okay but also even if the hargreeves siblings aren’t horrible to vanya while they’re growing up? through vanya’s eyes, every little thing is going to seem worse because of how her father excluded and ignored her.   in her mind,   ‘i want to keep you safe’ is warped into ‘i want to keep you down’.  it’s been proven that our memories change over time, and hers change to make her memories of her siblings worse than they really were.

the ua kids were raised and taught to exclude vanya and not see her as one of them.  which is why, while they’re good people, none of them (save allison) really seemed to care about helping her until helping her was the only way to stop the apocalypse.  only allison seems to realize that vanya, their sister, is a traumatized and mentally ill young woman who needs help.  the apocalypse happens because the hargreeves siblings fail vanya.
