“That’s awesome. You’ll flourish here. That’s what it’s all about. Growing and changing with the school to get us out there in the real world.”
Harley chuckled. “I mean, I really hope so.” She shrugged a little, folding her hands in front of her on the table. “The real world sounds so scary, do you really think this will help us out there?”
Char took the sketchbook from the girl and looked at the sketch smiling wide “wow…this is amazing you’re really talented I’m kind of jealous” she whispered.
Harley’s cheeks flushed at the compliment, taking the sketchbook back and biting her lip. “Thanks. And really, thank you for letting me draw you. I needed this piece for my portfolio.”
“I know what you mean. Grandmere is from France’s elite, it’s a mess sometimes. But at least I know what to pair with chicken?”, Olivia joked.
Harley couldn’t help but laugh, wrinkling her nose. “I mean, I suppose that’s a handy skill to have.” Harley said fairly, giving her a small shrug. “I just kind of wing it.”
“I’ve decided it’s the worst, and I totally hate it.”
“Oh come on, it can’t be that bad. What classes are you taking?”
“Of course i do! I’ve never actually had anyone draw me before” Char bit her lip smiling a bit she was honestly just flattered she had been asked if she could be the girls subject.
Harley grinned, getting up from her seat and smoothing down her skirt as she crossed over to her. She handed her the drawing, biting her lip anxiously. “What do you think...?”
“Believe me, it’s not cheesy at all”, Abby clicked her camera, to pause it. “You’re beautiful, but I guess there’s always room to get more comfortable… in your own skin. I still can’t process when people tell me I’m cute”.
Harley smiled a little, her cheeks going pink as the camera stopped filming and at the sound of the compliment. “I definitely can’t process it at all... I’m used to being teased a lot, so I don’t get a lot of compliments.” Harley admitted.
“I’m thinking some English, journalism classes? I love to write, so any other form where I can get my feeling out there, you know? I’ll have to take a math class so that’ll be statistics. What about you?”
Harley grinned widely. “I love writing too. If I wasn’t in love with drawing, I’d totally be doing that. I’m definitely taking some sort of math class... maybe pre-calculus. I’m pretty good with numbers I guess- school in general I’m not too bad at.” Harley shrugged modestly.
Harley bit her lip as she sat in the rec room, curled up in the corner with her sketch pad in front of her. She glanced up at her subject, who was sitting a few feet away, her tongue sticking out of the corner of her mouth as she concentrated on the final few lines. She grinned, pulling back and putting her pencil down. “Okay, I’m done! Wanna see?”
Rather than getting things ready for school starting, Rae sat on the grass with her headset on, listen to Don’t Stand So Close To Me, smacking bubble gum and watching the clouds. Her foot tapped to the beat as her back was resting on the grass. The weather was just perfect, she could take a nap if she really wanted. Just as she thought of maybe shutting her eyes, someone comes into view, and she grins, holding up her bubble tape. “Would you like some?” She offers, rather loudly with her music on.
Harley bit her lip, carrying a book as she walked across the school lawn. It was such a beautiful day, and Harley loved reading outside- it made the story feel more real. Harley jumped in surprise at the sound of a girl’s voice, looking down at her and arching her brows. She gave her a small smile before nodding. “Sure... thank you.” Harley said politely as she took a piece.
“I accidentally fell asleep on this park bench, and I can’t seem to find my phone anywhere.”
“... Why on a park bench exactly? It can’t have gone far. Phones don’t just get up and walk away...”
Isabella tapped a finger lightly on the shoulder of the person in front of her. “Yes, hi. I’m trying to get to the field before the bell rings and you are.. well, you’re preventing that. So if you’re not heading the same way I’m going to need to ask you to step aside.”
Harley looked over her shoulder, eyes slightly wide in surprise at her words. She frowned, glancing at the space on either side of her, before slowly stepping to the side. “... You could have moved around me you know.” Harley said quietly.
“Alright, so I just saw a freshman girl burst into tears because her boyfriend broke up with her. Of course I stuck around to hear his whole explanation because I didn’t expect it to piss me off but apparently the kid didn’t even really like her that much and he just led her on for four months, which is a bunch of bullshit.” Luce paused, letting out a heavy breath. He glanced up at the person he was ranting to, eyes narrowing slightly. His stomach was all in painful knots, and his hands were trembling just slightly, memories of Rodrigo rising to the surface no matter how hard he tried to shove them down. “Sorry, I just needed to get that off my chest.”
Harley stared at him in shock, her jaw dropped and her eyebrows furrowed in disgust. “Ew. That’s... that’s disgusting. I’ve never wanted to punch someone so much in my life... at least not a real life person that like, is within my vicinity.” Harley wrinkled her nose, frowning a little as she examined the other. “No no, it’s okay... I’m gonna assume this has happened to you before? Getting dumped like that I mean?”
“Classes today absolutely did my head in. I thought this school was supposed to be easy?”
“Technically this school is supposed to cater more towards our classes... we still have to deal with classes we struggle with.”
“Oh, great. There’s a story? You’ll have to fill me in because I’m curious now.”
“I mean who knows what her story is? Maybe she’s married with kids, or maybe she owns her own bakery? This is why we need that E! special so we know what Delilah is up to.”
“As incredible as these Turkish Delight things are, I don’t find that hard to believe. She can mark me down as a trouble maker if these are the prize.”
“I guess I should start calling you Edmund then hmm? He annoyed me so much in the first movie, but he grew on me in Prince Caspian. He’s a cutie too.”
“And what do you want to accomplish this year?”, Abby continued, “is there a sort of bucket list you have for this place?”
Harley thought for a moment. “I just want to expand my skills really. I want to also, more personally, get more comfortable in my own skin and make new friends.” Harley shrugged shyly. “It sounds cheesy, but it’s true.”
“You don’t need a feminine name to be a little lady, they could have named you Igor and you would be a lady”, Olivia shrugged, “Grandmama says that it’s all in the attitude”.
“I know, but my mom’s one of those ladies you know? She’s one of Chicago’s elite... or at least she likes to act like it.” Harley rolled her eyes. “Your grandma’s right though- and I have the most ladylike attitude ever.” Harley wrinkled her nose playfully.
